Using a patented crosslinking technology, HD-21A Emulsion combines exceptional durability with the ease of handling and application typically associated with water-based technology. Designed to be a true waterborne durable traffic paint, HD-21A Emulsion is ideal for situations where existing waterborne paint equipment is available, and where the additional benefits of rapid drying and excellent glass bead retention are critical. The ease of cleanup, enhanced worker safety, and reduced disposal costs are inherent features of HD-21A Emulsion that can translate into additional value and convenience for pavement marking applicators. High Durability, Toughness Expect improved adhesion over various road surfaces for longer life applications. Rapid Drying Use without coning at 20 mils wet film thickness to obtain exceptional performance on heavily plowed roads, requiring less frequent reapplication. Excellent Retention of Glass Beads Paints maintain their flexibility and retain glass beads longer than traditional pavement marking materials. Reduced Annualized Cost Expect three years performance under most conditions with mils wet film thickness (may require coning). Annualized application costs for three years compete favorably with epoxy and thermoplastic. User and Environmentally Friendly Exposure to and release of volatile organic compounds is minimized. Paints are non-flammable, and afford increased worker safety. Reduced disposal costs Waterborne paints are easily solidified, and can typically be disposed of as nonhazardous waste following appropriate federal, state, and local disposal guidelines. Ten percent Texanol is recommended for film formation down to 50 F. Texanol level can be increased to twelve percent for further improved long term performance. A suggested starting point formulation in order of addition is below: Material Pounds Gallons HD-21A (49.2%) TAMOL Surfynol CT Drew L-493 Defoamer Ti-Pure R-900 TiO Omyacarb-5 CaCO Mix the above with a good vortex until smooth, then add the following at slower speed: Methanol Texanol Drew L Water/Thickener TOTALS % PVC 60.0 % Volume Solids 61.0 Viscosity, Initial KU Equilibrated KU a 85 a 90 ph, initial a 10.0 Preservatives containing formaldehyde or amine functionality should not be used due to a negative interaction with the polymer. KATHON LX 1.5% microbicide should prove to be an acceptable alternative. 1. Stir to get a uniform sample prior to formulating. 2. Adjust initial viscosity to about 85 KU. This will result in an equilibrated KU in the low 90s for spraying thick films. A 2% NATROSOL 250HR HEC thickener is often used, but one can also use small amounts of more efficient non-ionic associative thickeners, such as Dow s ACRYSOL RM-825 or ACRYSOL RM-12W (thickeners reduced to 10% with water) to allow for more free water in the formulation. 3 Application Conditions and Handling Durability of Concrete Test Deck vs. Thermoplastics A wet film thickness of mils (~18 19 dry mils) is recommended to achieve the highest durability, while thinner lines, e.g., wet mils, will allow for accelerated drying. For thicker films, large particle size glass beads are recommended for optimum retroreflectance and wet night visibility. A bead drop rate of approximately lbs/gal of paint ( lbs/ft 2 ) for a 4-inch line and mil film thickness is a suitable initial range which can be fine tuned for optimum performance 3. Twenty-five to thirty mil film thickness can be achieved in a single application with proper equipment setting. The dry-to-no-pickup time is approximately 2 5 minutes for this system, depending on conditions. HD-21A Emulsion can be applied with airless or conventional spray equipment to asphalt, concrete, or existing road markings that are adhering well to the pavement surface. Air and surface temperature should be above 50 F, and at least 5 F above the dew point during application. Paints will require longer drying times when the relative humidity exceeds 90%. Clean-up is accomplished with clean or soapy water to remove wet paint from equipment. Stainless steel equipment should be used, and typical paint solvents can assist if removal of dried paint from tools and equipment is necessary. All solvents and solventborne paint should be removed from tanks and spray equipment prior to handling waterborne paints to avoid contamination, and equipment should be cleaned after each use. An ammonia solution can be floated on the surface of stored paint to prevent skinning. 3. It is better to characterize bead drop rate in units of glass bead weight per unit area when film thickness departs from the conventional 15 mils and/or line width does not equal 4 inches. A gallon of paint with a density of 14.1 lbs/gal will cover ft 2 at 15 wet mils, and therefore the same volume will cover ft 2 at 30 wet mils (4 inch line width). A drop rate of 6 lbs of glass beads per gallon of paint therefore calculates out to 6/53.47 or 112 lbs/ft 2 for a 30 wet mil film that is 4 inches wide. Kentucky N.T.P.E.P. CAUTION! Keep combustible and/or flammable products and their vapors away from heat, sparks, flames and other sources of ignition including static discharge. Processing or operating at temperatures near or above product flashpoint may pose a fire hazard. Use appropriate grounding and bonding techniques to manage static discharge hazards. CAUTION! Failure to maintain proper volume level when using immersion heaters can expose tank and solution to excessive heat resulting in a possible combustion hazard, particularly when plastic tanks are used. 7 Storage Disposal Store products in tightly closed original containers at temperatures recommended on the product label. Dispose in accordance with all local, state (provincial) and federal regulations. Empty containers may contain hazardous residues. This material and its container must be disposed in a safe and legal manner. It is the user's responsibility to verify that treatment and disposal procedures comply with local, state (provincial) and federal regulations.
