TABLE OF CONTENTS BANDWIDTH ON THE RISE FIBER 101: PON COMMON DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS CONCLUSION
WELCOME The rise in demand for high-bandwidth services continues to grow year-over-year. Overthe-top (OTT) VoD services, HD and 4K IPTV, and P2P video and voice communication platforms are gaining popularity worldwide. Paired with an increasing pressure to ensure high quality of experience (QoE) into the subscriber home, service providers everywhere must invest in more efficient converged access technologies. Key players like Verizon, Google, and AT&T are deploying fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) via pointto-multipoint passive optical networks (PON) to deliver these high-bandwidth demanding services beyond their long-distance communication networks and over the last mile. HD 4K 6
WELCOME With bandwidth capacity increasing tenfold in many cases, the call for fiber is clear. FTTx deployments give providers the infrastructure needed to keep up with the growth of bandwidth consumption. The first part of this ebook series was created to showcase the rise in bandwidth consumption and then help service providers understand common fiber deployment scenarios. By understanding the call for fiber, and realizing the various benefits offered from different deployment options, service providers will be able to make more intelligent decisions when planning a fiber roll-out. 7
BANDWIDTH ON THE RISE 8
BANDWIDTH ON THE RISE Bandwidth congestion rates continue to skyrocket as Internet penetration rates increase and more OTT services become available. 1,000,000, ,000, ,000, ,000,000 + ADDITIONAL INFORMATION In Q1 2015, popular OTT content provider Netflix grew its global subscriber base by a record of 4.9 million, and now boasts a total subscriber base of 62.3 million. Analysts only expect this growth to continue as Netflix plans to aggressively expand in Latin America, Europe, and Scandinavia. 75,000,000 Figure 1. Estimated unique visits to popular OTT content sites per month (Q1, 2015) 9
BANDWIDTH ON THE RISE To keep up with the demand for more bandwidth at faster speeds, service providers across the world have begun deploying fiber technology by way of point-to-multipoint Passive Optical Network (PON). + ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Global IP rates continue to rise, requiring faster access technologies to deliver and fulfill IP services to end users. Annual global IP traffic is expected to pass the zettabyte threshold (1000 exabytes) by the end of 2016, and reach the 2 zettabyte mark by
FIBER 101: PON The primary characteristic of the passive optical network (PON) is that the outside plant is completely passive. There are no active components outside at all, reducing outside plant operational maintenance costs and power requirements while increasing the system s resilience to electrical noise impairments and overall reliability. DID YOU KNOW? A passive optical network (PON) takes advantage of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), using one wavelength for downstream traffic and another wavelength for upstream traffic on a single mode fiber. PON 11
FIBER 101: PON The optical fiber of the PON is terminated in the hub by an optical line terminal (OLT) and at the customer premises by an optical network unit (ONU). The OLT and ONU are active system components terminating the optical fiber with only optical fiber and passive optical equipment like splitters and combiners in between. In PON network topologies, the downstream signal emitted from the OLT is split and received by all ONU endpoints in a serving area. The upstream output of the ONU is received at a single OLT port. DID YOU KNOW? A PON is a shared network where the OLT sends a single stream of downstream traffic that is seen by all ONUs. Each ONU only reads the content of those packets that are addressed to it. Encryption is also used to prevent eavesdropping. Figure 3. Point-to-multipoint Passive Optical Network (PON) 12
COMMON DEPLOYMENT OPTIONS: GIGABIT PON ETHERNET PON 13
GIGABIT PON (GPON) Maintained by the Full Service Access Network Group (FSAN) and the International Telecommunication Union s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Evolved from earlier APON and the more widely deployed BPON standards and represented the ITU-T s first PON standard supporting line rates in excess of a Gigabit per second Supports an asymmetrical 2.5 Gbps in the downstream from the hub to the subscriber premises and 1.25 Gbps in the upstream from the premises to the hub Uses an agnostic layer 2 transport using a fixed frame size called GPON Encapsulation Method, or GEM, which allows GPON to easily support Ethernet-based transmission as well as other applications like TDM transport or ATM transport for mobile backhaul and other telecom use cases + ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The GPON family of standards, known as G.984, were first introduced by the ITU-T in GPON evolved from earlier standards and represented the ITU- T s first PON standard supporting line rates in excess of a Gigabit per second. Downstream: Hub to Premises Upstream: Premises to Hub 2.5 Gbps 1.25 Gbps 14
ETHERNET PON (EPON) Maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Uses the native variable size Ethernet frame for its layer 2 MAC TCP or UDP traffic can be encapsulated directly into Ethernet frames and sent to the EPON physical layer EPON offers symmetrical data rates of 1 Gbps for both downstream and upstream The initial intent for EPON may have been the delivery of Ethernetbased services, more recent advances in Ethernet technology allows for the use of Ethernet in timing-sensitive applications, like mobile backhaul, where previously GPON may have been the better choice + ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The EPON 802.3ah standard was completed by the IEEE in EPON uses native variable size Ethernet frame for its layer 2 MAC. Thus, traffic can be encapsulated directly into Ethernet frames and sent to the EPON physical layer. Downstream BOTH 1 Gbps Upstream 15
GPON and EPON While there exists passionate advocates for both standard paths who often focus on the differences between the standards, there are more similarities between EPON and GPON than there are differences. Point-to-multipoint PON topologies that utilize: Time division multiplexing (TDM) in the downstream direction Time division multiple access (TDMA) in the upstream Similar optical wavelengths for downstream and upstream transmission Use packetized digital signals in the optical distribution network, making them more resilient to impairments than systems that use analog optical transmission Offer operators similar performance and the transmission of Ethernet-based packet data is currently the primary use case EPON GPON DID YOU KNOW? Both EPON and GPON are accepted as international standards. They cover the same network topology methods, incorporate the same WDM technology, and both provide tripleplay services. 16
GPON and EPON Both the FSAN/ITU-T and IEEE have introduced a second generation of GPON and EPON standards. The 10G-EPON standard offers both symmetrical and asymmetrical rates of 1 Gbps x 1 Gbps, 10 Gpbs x 1 Gbps and 10Gbps x 10Gbps. FASN/ITU-T completed XGPON1 in 2010, which offers an asymmetrical rate of 10Gbps x 2.5 Gbps. Benefits: DID YOU KNOW? Both FSAN/ITU-T and the IEEE are working on further standards that will offer additional capabilities and flexibility to the GPON and EPON systems. Increases capacity to provide greater speed of service delivery EPON or GPON systems allow operators to to maintain their investment in mature and scalable B/OSS systems Operators can leverage existing skills in engineering, technical support, and customer care 17
CONCLUSION 18
CONCLUSION To combat the increasing bandwidth demands brought on by OTT content, P2P video communication, HD and 4K IPTV, and multi-device home networks, operators must understand faster access technologies and common deployment scenarios. By rolling out a fiber-to-the-x project, you can increase service speed with point-to-multipoint service provisioning over PON. This helps boost customer QoE with better service time-to-market, increased network resilience, and enhanced ongoing service quality. Understanding common scenarios is just a start to the successful implementation of your fiber deployment. Continue the story with Book 2, and learn best practices for execution. Cable Operator? We ve got you covered. Skip ahead to our bonus Book: Cable Deployment Scenarios to see cablespecific details for your transition to fiber. 19
