1 2009 Falmouth Reads Together: Calendar of Events POETRY OPEN MIC Every Tuesday in August at the Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street Bay Meeting Room, August 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. Sign-up is at 7:00 p.m., end at 8:15 p.m. HOW TO READ A POEM Local poet Alice Kociemba will lead a book discussion featuring How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry, by Edward Hirsch. This program will run 3 consecutive Fridays from 1:00-2:00 pm. DATES: January 30: Chapters 1-4; February 6: Chapters 4-8; February 13: Ch Books are available in advance at the Reference Desk. Location: Trustees Room This "What's Falmouth Reading" program is offered to the community free of charge, but PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Enrollment is limited to 12. 2 WCAI (90.1 FM). She will discuss What's Falmouth Reading? This year's theme is POETRY for all readers of all ages, based on the Favorite Poem Project of former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. Jill will speak about upcoming programs and events, including the upcoming Falmouth visit by Robert Pinsky on March 3. Each session will include various writing exercises to jump-start new poems, with a goal of writing a poem each week. The workshop leader is Jarita Davis, PhD, a Falmouth resident, an experienced instructor, and published poet. Her most recent work is a poem cycle: There Should Be More Water, focusing on Cape Verdean Heritage. The keynote speaker for this year's town wide read is the poet himself, Robert Pinsky. During his three terms as Poet Laureate of the United States he served as a public ambassador for poetry, striving to enhance the love of poetry among all Americans. Poet and educator Mary Cronin will show parents and teachers how to weave poetry into the lives of children. She will demonstrate how the use of poetry fosters language development, and promotes social and emotional growth. The workshop will include ways to include poetry to celebrate important moments and as a springboard for art projects. Members of the Historical Society and the community will share favorite poems in celebration of the sesquicentennial of the birth of Falmouth s favorite daughter. Location: Hermann Meeting Room. CHILDREN'S EVENTS POETRY & ART with Tobai Leighton Date: Tuesday, February 3. Time: 1:30 2:30 pm On Early Release Day, come in for a POETRY craft with local artist Tobai Leighton. Please bring a copy of your favorite poem (or sue one of ours) to make a poetry decoupage. Watercolor wash with ripped paper and decoupaged flower petals. The final piece is a beautiful matte-finish, ready-to-frame poem. This What s Falmouth Reading program is free of charge. Recommended for ages 6 and up. Registration not required. 5 PLAYING WITH POETRY: An Event for Parents & Children Date: Saturday, April 4. Time: 10:30 am -12 noon In this playful event, Parents and their Preschoolers will experience poems in a whimsical way. Parents and their children will follow a self-guided tour of poetry stations to read and enjoy brief poems together while playing with or experiencing elements mentioned. Participants will enjoy shared playtime and the idea that poetry can be fun. Location: Falmouth Public Library -- Children s Program Room.
