1 Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship Policy The importance of PSHE and Citizenship: At Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School, we see PSHE and Citizenship as an integral, all encompassing element of children s education. Many crosscurricular links have been identified and implemented, and there is a direct impact on delivery of the Every Child Matters agenda through PSHE: Every Child Matters Agenda Be Healthy PSHE theme Nutrition & Physical Activity Sex & Relationship Education Stay Safe Safety Drugs Alcohol & Tobacco Enjoy & Achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve Economic Wellbeing Emotional Health and Wellbeing Citizenship Personal Finance Aims: Our aims in teaching PSHE and Citizenship at the Foundation stage through PSD are that the children will: Show an interest and confidence in classroom activities through observation and participation. Develop personal hygiene and dress / undressing skills. Select activities and resources independently. Maintain attention and concentration through involvement and perseverance. Take turns and play alongside others. Develop relationships with adults and peers. Understand the importance of respecting other people and their views. Express needs and emotions in an appropriate way, and be sensitive to the needs of others. Respect their own culture and those of others. Develop a positive sense of self-identity.

2 Our aims in teaching PSHE and Citizenship at KS1 are that the children will: Learn about themselves as developing individuals and as members of their communities. Learn the basic rules and skills for keeping themselves healthy and safe, and for behaving well. Have opportunities to show they can take some responsibility for themselves and for the environment. Begin to learn about their own and other people s feelings. Become aware of the views, needs and rights of other children and adults. Recognise that there are choices to be made, and the difference between right and wrong. Agree to and follow rules for their group, classroom and school, and understand how they affect them and other children. Learn social skills such as sharing, taking turns, resolving minor disputes and helping others. Our aims in teaching PSHE and Citizenship at KS2 are that the children will: Develop confidence through talking and writing about their own opinions, and explaining their views. Identify positive things about themselves and others to foster a growing sense of self worth and identity. Develop awareness of different types of relationship e.g. between friends and family, and to participate in those relationships effectively. Become more mature and independent through making real, informed choices and decisions. Learn how they can affect school life and how to get involved in school and community activities. Understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how they can determine many aspects of their own health. Understand the risks associated with some substances and behaviours such as drugs and bullying, and that pressure regarding these matters can come from a range of sources. Respect people s culture, religion, values and identity as they respect their own. Have the respect, support and encouragement from their school as they begin to develop into young adults, ultimately transferring to secondary school. Assessment: Where PSHE teaching has been delivered through Literacy work, teachers will need to make a judgement of children s grasp of the PSHE learning intention in addition to that for Literacy.

3 Record Keeping: Samples of work are also kept on an electronic portfolio to capture progression and achievement across year groups. Where appropriate a unique portfolio may be gathered to record a specific event such as Anti-bullying, Healthy Schools or Lenten Project work. Teaching and Learning: Due to the breadth of PSHE & Citizenship, a variety of teaching and learning styles are used. Visits and School Trips Visits and trips are an integral and important aspect of children s learning. Visits from members of the local community e.g. the police, enhance pupils understanding of their role in society. All year groups participate in annual class trips offering both educational and enjoyment benefits. Children in Year 6 are given the opportunity to develop their sense of identity and independence further through School Journey. This trip involves a week of outdoor pursuits away from home. Circle time The Telling Tales units of work offer realistic, relevant subjects and games for circle time sessions that relate to the unit of work being covered. The PSHE coordinator manages a library of resources that can aid teaching staff in the delivery of effective, quality circle time. Cross-curricular opportunities PSHE is a subject that links with most other subject areas, from understanding about the importance of exercise (P.E.) to appreciating the need for animal and plant conservation (Science). Please see the Appendix for an example of crosscurricular links. Other key methods of delivering the PSHE & Citizenship curriculum include: Whole School Events & focused events e.g. Healthy Schools Week Sports & Team Activities e.g. Athletics Festival Clubs e.g. School Council Assemblies both whole school and class assemblies Charity work Playground Play Leaders / Buddies Formulation of and adherence to class agreements / rules

4 ICT PSHE & Citizenship offers many opportunities for integration of ICT. This could be through website work (Teacher Supervised) or publication of a school newsletter (School Council) etc. Pupil s computer work will be saved on the School Network in the appropriate location. Equal Opportunities Teachers pay attention to equal distribution of resources and access to activities. We aim to provide equality of opportunity irrespective of gender, race, culture or any physical or sensory disability. Teachers also aim to distribute questions equally across all groups. Differentiation (Special Needs, Gifted & Talented, EAL) Provision is differentiated according to children s ability. The teacher will provide activities and ask questions to cater for this range of pupils. Teaching Assistants and other adult support staff can scribe for children who experience difficulty with writing and reading. Activities should continue to stretch these children whilst enabling success. Children with special needs participate in PSHE through learning opportunities matched to the individual needs of the children. More able and talented pupils will work on the same topics as their peers. Teachers will stretch their ability by asking more demanding questions or setting activities of an open-ended nature.
