7 C3S SCOPE How is climate changing? Earth observations Reanalyses Will climate change continue or accelerate? Predictions Projections What are the societal impacts? Climate indicators Sectoral information

C3S COMPONENTS Climate Data Store Sectoral Information System Evaluation and Quality Control Outreach and Dissemination ECVs past, present and future Observed, reanalysed and simulated Derived climate indicators Tools to support adaptation and mitigation at global and European level Open and free access Proof-of-concept developments 8 Monitors quality of C3S products and services Ensures C3S delivers state-of-the-art climate information to users Identifies gaps in service provision Bridges Copernicus with the research agenda in Europe (e.g. H2020, national research projects) Web content Public outreach Coordination with national outreach Liaison with public authorities Conferences, seminars Training and education

9 CDS ARCHITECTURE Data repositories (distributed) Located at different data providers, seamlessly available via CDS May implement basic tools to perform analytics on local data Web portal (centralised) Content Management System (articles, news, events) Browsing/searching CDS product catalogue, tools catalogue, Manages users data retrieval and computation requests Broker/Scheduler Dispatches data retrieval and computation requests to the relevant data repositories (including from other services) Implements quality of service

10 CLIMATE DATA STORE Observation s Climate reanalysi s Mode l outpu t Scientific basis: Essential Climate Variables as defined by GCOS GCOS Status Report (GCOS-195) IPCC, CMIP Global estimates of ECVs from satellite and insitu observations Global atmosphere, ocean, land Global multi-model seasonal forecast products Reprocessed CDRs, reference observations Regional reanalysis for Europe Access to CMIP data and products Support for data rescue, climate data collections Coupled climate reanalysis for 100 years Reference set of climate projections for Europe Climate Indicators

11 ECV ROADMAP FOR C3S

12 C3S REANALYSES Global reanalysis ERA5 is now in production 32km global resolution Uncertainty estimates Improved use of observations Newly reprocessed satellite data Hourly data from 1979-NRT Access to all input observations Regional reanalysis European domain (Arctic Reanalysis?) Higher spatial resolution Workshop May 2016 Competitive call by 2016 Q4

13 C3S SEASONAL FORECASTS PRODUCTS Original data: 1 deg gridded data sets for many variables (atmosphere, ocean; high temporal resolution: 6h - 24h) Graphical products: Processed numerical data, starting with all data represented in the graphics

ECMWF LAND DATA ASSIMILATION SYSTEM (LDAS) P. de Rosnay (ECWMWF) Snow depth Methods: Cressman for ERA-Interim, 2D Optimal Interpolation (OI) for NWP & ERA5 Conventional observations: in situ snow depth (SYNOP & additional National data) Satellite data: NOAA/NESDIS IMS Snow Cover Extent (daily product). Soil moisture Methods: - 1D OI in ERA-Interim - Simplified Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for NWP and for ERA5 Conventional observations: Analysed SYNOP 2m air relative humidity and air temp. Satellite data: Scatterometer SM for NWP (ASCAT) & for ERA5 (ERS/SCAT &ASCAT) ESA SMOS brightness temperature in development, research 14

Europe Global Snow 15 OPERATIONAL SNOW ANALYSIS MONITORING WINTER P. de Rosnay (ECWMWF) de Rosnay et al., ECMWF Newsletter 143, Spring 2015

16 OBSERVATIONS NEEDS P. de Rosnay (ECWMWF) Snow depth observations disseminated on the WMO/GTS are decreasing. There are challenges in retrieving snow mass from satellite measurements: novel mission concepts required for Snow Water Equivalent.

INITIATIVES ADDRESSING SNOW OBSERVATIONS ON THE GTS GCW Snow Watch Activity P. de Rosnay (ECWMWF) COST action on Snow: HarmoSnow A European network for a harmonised monitoring of snow for the benefit of climate change scenarios, hydrology and numerical weather prediction. Snow Watch reporting Handout 2015 (ECMWF/UKMO) NAEDEX (North America - Europe Data EXchange) Meeting Oct > discussion NOAA/NCEP to improve availability of snow depth on the GTS status? 17 - New section for in situ surface data - Would be relevant to use it to monitor snow depth data availabity

CONCLUSIONS CAMS and C3S provide an increasing volume of atmospheric composition and climate information relevant for polar regions and snow covered areas, based on a combination of satellite and in-situ observations using the latest methods and tools. The Climate Data Store will offer a one-stop-shop access to this information, and will include: Data (including sectoral information) Tools Best practices The Copernicus data policy is full-free-open Consistent with GEO Data sharing principles, WMO resol. 40, This will foster uptake by downstream services (national, local, private and public) and therefore support market 18
