6 What Should You Do If...? 4-H Volunteer Leader Training Child Abuse & Neglect Training Role Play Situations A child at your 4-H meeting is very withdrawn. He constantly shys away from any casual contact with others. How could you handle this situation? A 12 year old girl has adopted you as her confident. She likes to talk to you after the meeting. You have also noticed occasional bruises on the back of her legs. How would you handle this situation? How could you help her? A family from your club has two children ages 4 and 8. You have heard rumors that the parents like to party on the weekend. Cindy, the 8 year old girl talks to other 4-H ers and to you about keeping her little sister while her parents are out all night on Friday and Saturday nights. What would you do? Jim is a member of your 4-H Club. He is being raised by foster parents, who have other children in your club. In confidence, the mother has told you that Jim was a victim of abuse. At club meetings he lashes out at others and is overly aggressive during activities. How would you handle this situation?

7 You Can Be A Real Life Saver Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect Volunteer Leader Training (Insert Date Here) VIII. What is your level of understanding (Place an X in the box representing your knowledge prior to this training; Place an O in the box representing your knowledge after this training.) Low High on the four types of abuse. on the indicators of abuse. on reporting abuse. on dealing with the victim. 2. The most important thing I will take home from this training is: 3. The most important action I can take if I suspect abuse is: 3. The one area I would like to learn more about is: Thank you for taking the time to complete this form.

8 IX. Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (Newsletter article or radio script) It is hard to avoid. Pick up any newspaper, or listen to any television or radio news-cast and you are bound to hear a report on some case of child abuse or neglect. The typical reaction is, why would anyone do that to a child, or what could make a person do something so bad to a child. Most of us neither have the time nor the resources to examine the causes of such a sad problem, but we can help with the cause. Becoming aware of what abuse is will help us confront this worldwide problem. Understanding that physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as neglect not only hurts youth, but undermines the society in which we live, is the first step we must take. Learning to identify the indicators or symptoms of abuse is also important because both the perpetrator and the victim of the crime hide child abuse and neglect. Symptoms can come in the form of the physical indicators, as well as changes in behavior. Knowing what abuse is, and being able to identify the physical and behavioral indicators is not enough. It is a moral obligation to protect children, whether they are our own or not. An often-quoted African Proverb states that, it takes a village to raise a child, applies to our duty to help all children. Once you believe that abuse in some form is occurring, knowing what to do next in this process is important. Answering questions like, who do I contact? and what will they ask me? are just a few of the things you will need to know. Because the youth trusts you, he or she may approach you and tell you that abuse is occurring. Knowing how to respond to a youth that has disclosed this highly sensitive information to you is often the first step in their therapeutic recovery. Be careful. Even if we may identify one or more indicators of abuse, we do not want to go on a witch hunt, and report everything we see. The key is to prepare yourself with the knowledge of abuse, and the steps of the process to report it if you suspect abuse is occurring. Remember, you are not alone. The (name of county) Extension staff is providing a one and one half hour training on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect for volunteer leaders on (insert date) at (insert time). The training will be held at (insert address), and pre-registration is required. If you have any questions, please contact (name of contact) at (insert phone number (s)), or at (insert address).
