INSTRUCTIONS There are twelve questions in this booklet, one for each of the following areas of study: Fourteenth-century Italian Painting Fifteenth-century Italian Painting Italian Renaissance Sculpture High Renaissance and the Development of Mannerism Venetian Painting Northern Renaissance Art Cubism and Abstraction Fauvism and Expressionism Dada and Surrealism Architecture: Modernism to Postmodernism Modern American Art Modern New Zealand Art. Select ONE question, and answer BOTH parts and. The definitions below may assist you in your answers. Write your answer in Answer Booklet 90495A. DEFINITIONS Context: Movement: the circumstances in which artists work, eg personal, social, historical, cultural, geographical, environmental, economic, political, religious, artistic, gender, class, philosophical. a group who adopt a similar approach to style or ideology, eg Mannerism, Pop, Die Brücke, Cubism, Constructivism, Feminism.
3 EITHER: QUESTION ONE: FOURTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN PAINTING 3 Giotto has been described as the Father of the Renaissance. Describe the artistic context created by Giotto, and then describe evidence of this context in TWO fourteenth-century Italian paintings. Explain the relationships between your selected paintings, and this context. Evaluate the extent to which it is appropriate to regard Giotto as the Father of the Renaissance. OR: QUESTION TWO: FIFTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN PAINTING Describe the humanist background to fifteenth-century Italian painting, and then describe evidence of this context in TWO paintings. Explain the relationships between your selected paintings and this context. Evaluate the extent to which humanism was a significant factor in the development of the Italian Renaissance style of painting. OR: QUESTION THREE: ITALIAN RENAISSANCE SCULPTURE Select TWO sculptures that were made for religious purposes. Describe the religious context of the sculptures, and then describe evidence of this context in the TWO sculptures. Explain the relationships between your selected sculptures and their context. Evaluate the extent to which the religious context had an impact on the styles of Italian Renaissance sculpture. OR: QUESTION FOUR: HIGH RENAISSANCE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANNERISM Describe the antique sculptural and / or architectural environment that influenced the development of Italian High Renaissance painting, and then describe evidence of this context in TWO High Renaissance paintings. Explain the relationships between your selected paintings and this context. Evaluate the extent to which this antique sculptural and / or architectural environment was a significant factor in the development of the High Renaissance style of painting. OR: QUESTION FIVE: VENETIAN PAINTING Describe the circumstances that created a demand for state portraiture in Venice, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO state portraits. Explain the relationships between your selected portraits and this context. Evaluate the extent to which the demand for state portraits had a significant impact on the development of portraiture in Venetian Renaissance art.
4 OR: QUESTION SIX: NORTHERN RENAISSANCE ART 4 Describe the aspects of Italian Renaissance art that appealed to Albrecht Dürer, and then describe evidence of this context in TWO art works by Dürer. Explain the relationships between your selected art works and this context. Evaluate the extent to which the Italian Renaissance had a significant influence on the development of Dürer s ideas about art. OR: QUESTION SEVEN: CUBISM AND ABSTRACTION Describe the social and / or political circumstances in Italy that encouraged the development of Futurism, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO Futurist art works. Explain the relationships between your selected art works and these circumstances. Evaluate the extent to which these social and / or political circumstances account for the emergence of Futurism. OR: QUESTION EIGHT: FAUVISM AND EXPRESSIONISM Describe the circumstances that encouraged printmaking in Germany in the early twentieth century, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO prints by German Expressionist artists. Explain the relationships between your selected prints and these circumstances. Evaluate the extent to which these circumstances had a significant impact on the development of German Expressionism. OR: QUESTION NINE: DADA AND SURREALISM Describe the psychoanalytical context of surrealist art, and then describe evidence of that context in TWO art works. Explain the relationships between your selected art works and this context. Evaluate the extent to which an understanding of psychoanalytical ideas is necessary for the understanding of surrealist art. OR: QUESTION TEN: ARCHITECTURE: MODERNISM TO POSTMODERNISM Describe the twentieth-century circumstances that have affected the growth of cities, and then describe evidence of these circumstances in TWO buildings. Explain the relationships between your selected buildings and these circumstances. Evaluate the extent to which these circumstances had a destructive or an enriching impact on the development of twentieth-century architecture.
