Introduction to CSS Part 1 Designed and Implemented by Joumana Rahime 2
Course Objectives Learn the foundations of CSS Introduction and Project Overview Basic CSS Syntax How to use selectors to style HTML elements Common CSS properties Student Project Style an existing HTML page using CSS Challenging activities and Peer to Peer Collaborative Team up with a peer(s) and work on an activity from the challenging activities list Learn about Online Resources for Programming Self Learning and Advancing 3
Introduction and Project Preview CSS Stands for Cascading Style Sheet CSS allows you to style, or change the way HTML is presented by default CSS controls the layout and look of your webpage. You can make changes on anything from changing colors, to manipulating the width of images, adding borders, changing the background color of web pages, to complete layout and animations. Basic HTML page styled using CSS Tips for instructors: Visit CSS Zen Garden website om to demonstrate to the students what CSS can do and the power and beauty of its design. Have the project files saved on students computers prior to the class.. 4
Creating and Setting up our CSS Get the students started by pulling up the existing default unstyled HTML page using any text editor that you choose for the class Create a new file in the existing project folder and call it main.css Write the first CSS selector Select an element from the HTML file to make a change to while explaining in details the syntax of CSS statement Example: p { color: green; } Selector p { color : green; } property Declaration value Attach the stylesheet to the HTML file Add the <link> tag between the <head> tags as follows: <link href= main.css rel= stylesheet type= text/css > Note that the <link> tag requires three attributes to work properly: href, rel, and type Tips for instructors: Instructors should have a copy of the CSS project folder prior to this course. Remember to explain to the students that the CSS file should have an extension of.css otherwise the browser would not recognize it a as stylesheet file and won t process it. Demonstrate to the students that nothing is happening to the paragraph element because we need one additional step before we can see the changes that the CSS is making. The additional step is to add a tag inside the <head> area attaching the stylesheet to the HTML file 5
Using the width property to change the size of an image Target all the <img> elements in your HTML and change their width to 600 pixels. In the CSS file type the following: img { } width: 600px; Tips for instructors: In the image property we can specify both the width and the height. But for now we are going to specify either the height or the width and the reason for that is if we specify both we might end up with stretching or distortion if we don t choose the proportions exactly right. So if we choose only one the browser will automatically calculate the other so we re retaining the proportions. 6
Adding a border to an image The CSS border properties allow you to specify the style, size and color of an element s border. Target all the <img> elements in your HTML and add a border to them. In the CSS file type the following: img { } width: 600px; border-width: 3px; border-style: solid; border-color: gray; For instructors: No need to add a new selector for our images since we are adding more properties to the same tag. Remember to add a semi colon after each statement. Demonstrate to the students that none of the border properties will have any effect unless the border-style property is set. Have the students go to online resources to look up list of options for different border property values; example: Border-style values are solid, dashed, groove, and many more. 7
Changing the color of text The color property is used to set the color of the text. Color Types 1. Color Keywords: gray 2. RGB: rgb(192,192,192) 3. HEX: #C0C0C0 Target all the <p> elements in your HTML and change their color to gray using the color keyword value. Target all the <h1> elements in your HTML and change their color to red using an HEX value. Target all the <h2> and <h3> elements in your HTML and change their color to green using a RGB value. Tips for instructors: Color keywords type is not recommended. This type of colors is not very precise and each browser has its own way of interpreting it. Use color keywords only if you are in a hurry or you just want to quickly test out different colors. RGB and HEX type is the color of the screen: Red, Green, Blue. Those two color types are supported in all major browsers and provide a broad array of colors that are precise across browsers. Consult with the HTML color picker for a complete list of color values: ker.asp 8
Changing the background color of a webpage The background-color property is used to set the background color of an element. In the CSS file type the following: body { background-color: #000000; } Tips for instructors: After introducing the property used to change the background color, challenge the students to find the element in the HTML file that changes the background color of the whole page. 9
Adding Comments The comment is used to insert comments into the source code. Comments are not displayed in the browsers. You can use comments to explain your code or hide scripts from browsers. Comments Syntax: /* comment text */ Example on explaining some code: /* Test Color Styles */ Example on hiding some code: /* Test Color Styles */ img { width: 600px; /* border-width: 8px; border-styles: solid; border-color: gray; */ } 10
Validating CSS file We validate our CSS file to check for syntax errors, typos, or incorrect uses of CSS. Common errors are forgetting to close a curly brackets or adding a semi-colons at the end of a statement. To validate our code we need to go to the following website, click on file upload, and follow the screen instructions. Read the W3C CSS Validator results for the uploaded file and correct any errors if found. Tips for instructors: Have the students introduce some errors purposely into their CSS file such as deleting a curly bracket, removing a semicolon, and or keyword misspelling. Ask them to re-upload the file and check out the Validator error results. 11
Challenging Activity ideas 1. Add a border to the entire webpage with rounded corners as demonstrated below: 12
