4 Laying the Foundations THE NEST 6 weeks - 2 years Caring for your babies and toddlers is a responsibility that we take very seriously. The Nest offers the highest standards of care and provides a safe and secure environment. Babies and toddlers learn primarily through sensory input and physical movement. Assisted by staff (who also ensure safety and cleanliness), The Nest provides opportunities and materials for children to learn through all of their senses.

5 Pastoral THE NEST 6 weeks - 2 years We aim to build upon what you have already experienced with your child and work in partnership with you. We want to share your child s experiences, milestones and feelings with you as they develop; communication is embedded in all that we do. During your child s time in The Nest, we will record their progress and achievements and make them available via a secure website for you to view.

6 THE NEST 6 weeks - 2 years Personal Development Babies have an inborn drive to continually stretch their abilities and The Nest will help them to interact with everything around them as they develop with amazing rapidity; from novice walkers.

8 Laying the Foundations PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception A wonderful, purpose-built department set in its proximity to the Main School and being part of our large extended family. Assurance Award for six years running. The ethos is one of developing every child at his or her own pace and according to individual needs through both child-led and adult-led activities. and outside classroom.

9 Pastoral PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception Thursday afternoon is Open House where existing parents and prospective parents are welcome to join the children for organised workshops and activities. Open House provides an excellent opportunity for parents to learn about the Foundation Stage and get to know the staff. Partnership with parents is very important to take part in their children s learning. Our open-door policy ensures parents and staff share knowledge of the children. Parents are invited to welcome afternoons and termly consultations, and parents can access accounts of their children s achievements in their virtual learning journeys.

10 PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception Activities We recognise the importance of outdoor learning and its potential to expand children s experiences. It broadens their capacity to term we run Forest Workshops where pupils spend the day in our woods and learn many skills from these special activities.

11 PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception Physical Development Pre-Prep children have Gym and Games in the main school Gym Hall where they acquire sound movement skills and undertake physical activities. The children have weekly swimming lessons at the local Five Rivers leisure centre.

12 PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception Creative Development The children s creative development is enriched by a variety of play based activities indoor and outdoor provision. Staff focus on encouraging children to learn effectively through exploring, investigating, concentrating, enjoying learning and thinking creatively and critically.

13 PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception Life Skills We recognise the importance of the outdoor learning environment to expand children s experiences and broaden their capacity to learn in unique ways. Children spend time in the Forest School Garden and learn many skills from the activities. The children have daily Review Time, to encourage them to talk about their learning experiences, to help reinforce and share their learning.

14 Personal Development PRE-PREP 2 Years - Reception For children over the age of three, meticulous planning, based on observations of their interests, abilities and information provided by parents, provides purposeful learning, assessment and next steps. Both indoors and outdoors, children engage and become absorbed in child-initiated and adult-led activities that encourage them to be inquisitive, explore imaginatively

16 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Welcome to the Preparatory School day and each child feels valued, happy and secure. We promote our pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development in a framework of traditional Christian values, and prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. All Years consistently achieve outstanding results in the care the teaching staff devote to the success of each individual pupil. A wide variety of teaching methods are used to stimulate pupils.

17 A Broad and Enriched Curriculum PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 of learning opportunities in specialist classes. In addition to the curriculum delivered by the form teacher, specialist teaching in Science, Art, Design and using the best of modern and traditional teaching methods, stimulate learning. An extensive programme of visits, including some residential trips, enhances classroom work.

18 Core Subjects PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 We encourage pupils to interact with each other on all levels; through group, paired and individual activities. Mathematics is taught in a way designed to develop pupil s which is stimulating and enjoyable. We want to show pupils that Mathematics can be fun! In Science we encourage pupil s understanding of experimenting, the importance of using the correct vocabulary, and that having a go is the most important part of that process of discovery and learning.

19 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Arts/Drama/Design Technology Theatre and theatrical workshops take place in the Walker Hall, a multi-purpose performance hall, offering outstanding facilities for music and performing arts. Drama and performances are given throughout the year. As well as the educational and enjoyment factors, it is well known that acting is a lessons are fun!

20 Music PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Department is a busy and vibrant place with emphasis on inclusion, and enjoyment through active participation, helping to develop appropriate skills to ensure that they enjoy their music-making. We have a wide range of peripatetic music teachers visiting the school to teach individual instrumental lessons.

22 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Physical Education We believe in sport for all, and encourage good sportsmanship and fair play at all times. We want our children to have a love of sport and develop skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. competitions take place and our team games include rugby, hockey, football, cricket, netball and rounders. Girls and boys also have the opportunity to participate in swimming, athletics, cross country, tennis and gymnastics.

Consistent liaison between the Department staff, class and subject teachers helps everyone understand the children s needs. The school has recently gained Crested recognition for the support given to pupils

26 Beyond the Classroom PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 There is an extensive range of opportunities on offer to boys and girls of all ages - whatever their interests. Many extra-curricular activities run weekly throughout the year, some are seasonal. Trips are in abundance, visiting local places of interest linked to topics covered or studying these abroad. Residential trips begin in Year 5. We never have time to get bored!

27 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Outdoor Activities Visiting local places of interest linked to topics covered also provides valuable understanding and enjoyment for our pupils. Residential trips, including international trips take place in Year 5 and 6.

28 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Games schools including weekly matches and annual tournaments. We have Inter-House sports competitions including athletics, rugby, hockey, football, cricket, netball and rounders. Tennis, swimming, basketball and other sports are also coached. In addition to sports facilities on site, we have the picturesque Cathedral Close. Sporting activities and training sessions take place during lunch hours and after school. on offer.

29 Clubs PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 There is an extensive range of opportunities on offer to boys and girls of all ages - whatever their interests. Many extra-curricular activities run weekly throughout the year, others are seasonal. Clubs take place at lunch times, after school and all Prep pupils have two activity sessions during the school week. We never have time to get bored!

30 PREPARATORY Year 1 - Year 6 Community We are a thriving and happy school where pupils enjoy excellent relationships with each other and with staff. This was recognised in our recent Inspection where these relationships in the school were described as outstanding. We aim to educate the whole pupil in a caring manner, providing a strong foundation of will carry forward with them into a successful future.

34 Welcome to the Senior School SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Our pupils are motivated, inspired and challenged across the curriculum in a broad range of subjects. which widens pupils views and understanding of contemporary issues, complements their academic studies. Mathematics is an exciting subject which is not only satisfying in its own right, but continues to be universally accepted as one of the essential subjects required by universities and employers alike.

37 Science SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Sciences are taught with a blend of practical, and theoretical, including ICT, approaches. We seek to develop understanding with exciting hands on experiments and demonstrations. Small classes allow a great range of practical experiences and Science trips reinforce learning.

38 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Humanities We study a variety of topics from Pompeii and volcanoes in Year 7 to tourism and teenagers in Year 11. Geographers are busy collecting data out on the Dorset coast. We enliven our lessons with discussion, TV programme clips, music, handling of artefacts and presentations. In Religious Studies pupils learn about the beliefs and festivals of the major faiths. They are taught values, respect and understanding. They explore moral issues and discover new things about the world. Our studies are about real issues which are being discussed and debated in Parliament in Great Britain and elsewhere, including matters in the news.

39 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Modern Foreign Languages In Year 8 pupils choose their second modern language of either German or Spanish. We aim to make languages fun and enjoyable, supported by visits to France, Germany and Spain where pupils can soak up the culture in a relaxed way. Our students quickly get a good grasp of languages and continue with at least one

40 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 ICT The department embraces and explores the use of the latest software and technologies to encourage pupils interest in ICT beyond the classroom. Throughout their studies, pupils explore and develop their practical skills in a number of software packages and hardware use, and evaluative skills.

41 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Design Technology Pupils spend a double lesson every week, designing and making a variety of different projects. A further lesson is spent working on CAD (computer aided design) skills. These sessions are complementary to the ongoing projects and provide progression in a wide range of skills: using hand tools, machines and computers.

42 Art and Photography SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 All pupils throughout the school are taught by enthusiastic specialist teachers with extensive commercial experience within Art and Design. In addition, the school boasts a dark room for traditional photography and a dedicated suite of PC s with Photoshop to enhance digital photography Recent trips were to New York, Amsterdam and using local resources to stimulate the creative talents of our pupils.

43 Music SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 At Key Stage 4 pupils can opt to study developing their performing and composing include World Music, Western Concert Trends, and Popular Music in Context. We have choirs and orchestras and we stage numerous concerts and productions throughout the year.

44 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Drama The emphasis is on participation, teamwork and fun! Some pupils will have a technical interest and can assist with designing and operating sounds and lighting for our events. Regular workshops and theatre visits take place in all Years and there are lively extra-curricular Drama clubs.

45 Beyond the Classroom SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 in as many activities as possible and in this way develop their talents to the full. visiting speakers. trips and recently we have travelled to the United States, to France, Spain, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. We believe in taking learning outside of the classroom and bringing it alive for our pupils as well as building happy memories for pupils to look back on in future years.

46 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 PE/Games We want our children to have a love of sport and we make sure that they can develop the skills, knowledge and expertise that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We hope to motivate and encourage pupils to extend their skills by playing sport for local clubs and organisations. and annual tournaments. Inter-house sports competitions readily take place. Our team games include: netball, hockey, football, rugby, cricket, tennis and rounders. All pupils also have the opportunity to participate in swimming, athletics, cross-country, gymnastics. trampolining, basketball, volleyball, circuit training, aerobics, table tennis, yoga and skiing.

47 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 Pastoral All pupils have a Form Tutor who is responsible for their pastoral welfare. They will see each other morning and afternoon for registration. Also to help our pupils do the very best, every pupil in the Senior School has an Academic Vertical Tutor, who continues with the pupil throughout their time in the Senior School. The tutor will monitor your child s academic progress to ensure that they receive all the help and guidance they need to meet academic

48 Personal Development SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 We offer a complete education in which our pupils commitment to music, art, drama, sports, the environment and to helping others through community and charity fund-raising are a credit to them. Pupils are expected to demonstrate care for each other and value the contributions others can make. They celebrate the achievements of others and are keen to show their work in displays around the school. A very high standard of behaviour is expected from the pupils, whilst they and a willingness to serve. Good relationships exist between pupils and their teachers who deliver a well-structured Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship foundation to launch them into the wider world as independent, well-informed and active citizens.

50 SENIOR Year 7 - Year 11 School Leavers Destinations In recent years many pupils have chosen to study A levels in the Sixth Forms at the two Salisbury grammar schools. Both schools offer a wide A level choice considerable success in these highly academic environments. Other pupils prefer a broader education, provided at Sixth Form colleges, encompassing both and the International Baccalaureate. Amongst the most popular are Burgate, Brockenhurst and Peter Symonds, all of which offer a wide variety of courses and achieve excellent results. and we enjoy receiving reports of their successes from their Post Sixteen provider. Many of our former students keep in touch with us and report back proudly on their progress.
