1 LESSON 1 I M KS1 LESSON 1 I M FANTASTIC! TASTIC! FAN Learning objectives: To recognise what I am good at. Resources: Poster, template of photo frame for display, (Resource 2 & 8). (Download reference A & B). Differentiation: Children can draw and verbalize what they are fantastic at. Curriculum links: Literacy: EN1: 1b) Choose words with precision. EN3: 2a) Write familiar words and attempt unfamiliar ones. PSHE 1d) To think about themselves, learn from their experiences and recognise what they are good at. ACTIVITY 1 In a teacher led session, children to create a word bank of positive attributes they may have. Explain to the children that these can be things that we do or physical positives. Encourage children to focus more on talents and characteristics rather than appearances. Discuss that children can be fantastic in lots of different ways body (sport) fantastic, maths fantastic, friendship fantastic, leader fantastic etc. Explain that these are all different but all valuable. Use the poster (Resource 2) to get pupils to write on post it notes why they think they are fantastic and stick them on the poster. ACTIVITY 2 Show the clip where Mrs Fox says We are all different, but there is something fantastic about that. (Download reference B), Sit children in a circle and introduce them to the idea that we are all good at something. Make links to film clip. Get the children to say in turn what they are good at. Provide children with sentence starter: I am fantastic at. INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Children to draw a picture of themselves in the photo frame and label something about themselves that is fantastic. 2 LESSON 1 I M TASTIC! FAN PLENARY Children to set a goal for something they would like to be fantastic at. EXTENSION ACTIVITY Children to create a poster to advertise being a fantastic person. Higher ability children can write a sentence explaining why being fantastic is a good idea. -2-
3 LESSON 2 KS1 LESSON 2 FANTASTIC FRIEND! FRIEND! Learning objectives: To make positive choices to be a good friend. Resources: Downloadable masks to cut out (Resource 3), string. (Download reference D) Differentiation: Children to be placed in mixed ability groups. Curriculum links: Literacy: EN1: 4a) Use language and actions to explore and convey situations, characters and emotions. PSHE 2c) To recognise choices they can make, and recognise the difference between right and wrong. ACTIVITY 1 Discuss with the class What makes a (fantastic) friend? Children discuss with their response partners then select pairs to share what they have discussed. List their contributions on whiteboard/flipchart. ACTIVITY 2 Download the cut-out mask templates and provide each pupil with their own mask to make, colour in and add string to (Resource 3) (show Download reference D). The teacher then selects children for dramatic role-play. Children to wear their masks and act out the clip where Mr Fox distributes the bandit hats to all the animals and the young fox compliments his cousin on his improvised bandit hat made from a sock. Mr Fox is taking responsibility for the strife he has got himself and the other digger animals into with the famers. The masks would also be a good starting point for a class assembly. The teacher can then show the clips from the film drawing attention to the fact the animals are clubbing together to find a solution to their problem. Discuss why Mr Fox is a good friend. Children to understand that making mistakes and forgiveness is all part of friendship. Give children the scenario of a new child starting in their class in a few days time. Choose someone who can demonstrate that they can be a fantastic friend. continued
4 LESSON 2 FRIEND! INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Display words collected in Activity 1. Children can draw or write down all the qualities of the ones they think are the most important in a fantastic friend. PLENARY Teacher to select children to come to the front and act out (helped by other children s ideas) how they can be a good friend to a new member of the class, e.g. ask them to play, say hello, smile, share their stationary and include them in a team/group. EXTENSION ACTIVITY Draw picture of a friend in the class and write/draw why they are fantastic. -4-
5 LESSON 3 KS1 LESSON 3 FANTASTIC FAMILY! FAMILY! Learning objectives: To know parents and carers will provide care. Resources: Downloadable worksheets. (Resource 6 & 7) (Download reference C & E) Differentiation: Teacher to provide wordbank/vocabulary. Curriculum links: Literacy: EN3: 1c) Put their ideas into sentences. PSHE 2f) That they belong to various groups and communities, such as family and school. ACTIVITY 1 What is a family? Who is in your family? Do you have to live with your family? Can you have friends that are family? Teacher to have an enlarged copy of Resource 6 and fill it in as a class. Teacher to display vocabulary on interactive whiteboard (IWB). ACTIVITY 2 Show the clip where Mr Fox is finding out the strengths of each animal and link this to the concept of family (Download reference C). Although all the animals are not related, they work together and support each other for the good of all concerned i.e. against the mean farmers. Discuss with the children ways people around them help them. Show film clip (Download reference E) drawing attention to the following scene where Mrs Fox says to Mr Fox: You really are fantastic. Mr Fox replies, I try. Discuss why Mrs loves Mr Fox. Recognise that Mr Fox did something selfless and fantastic. Explain that usually, when people do good things for others, they appreciate it and want to be their friend and spend time with them. Can they remember a time someone did something kind towards them? continued
6 LESSON 3 FAMILY! INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Children to draw/write about what makes their family fantastic (Resource 7). Can they think of something they can do to show their family/carers/friend/special person they love them? PLENARY In circle time, children to take turns and say, I love/like a member of my family because EXTENSION ACTIVITY Create a thank you heart: Children to write a note on a heart template, thanking someone in their family for showing love/sacrifice toward them. They can decorate this and give it to someone at home. -6-
