1 Brinscall Village Junior Football Club Club Ethos & Principles Mission Statement Brinscall Village Junior Football Club aims to develop the football and social skills of the children whilst promoting fun, teamwork and discipline within a well-structured coaching system employing best practice at all times Ethos of the club: To promote enjoyment and sportsmanship for all. To develop the skills and abilities of the individual child within a Team Environment. The popularity of the club is reflected in the number of children who join us and then wish to remain with us. We provide an opportunity for children to get involved in football and then enjoy it to the best of their ability with all the fringe benefits. Over the years we have evolved the club in order to reflect the experiences we have witnessed, both positive and negative. All of which is for what we feel is best for the children and their football development. How do we measure the progress of the player and the team? We measure our success on the attendance of the children, how well we develop the individual in improving their own ability level and finally, on how the team performs as a unit. We are NOT about win at all costs, win at all costs does not work for us. We are about coaching the children to be FOOTBALLERS, for that they have to learn how to play the game with confidence. We do not just select the best players from a trial selection process, we do not encourage the sourcing a good players from other clubs. What do we do: we establish an age group at U6. From there the squad is coached with the intention of developing the children into organised groups ready for playing matches. 1

2 Experience has shown us that to have a rotation policy without any direction fails the more able player and does not significantly improve the less able player. Players improve with good coaching and exposure to games in an environment where the child feels that they can contribute or that others can support them in their contributions. This will reinforce their enjoyment, aide their confidence and in turn impact on their ability. In order for us to develop the players at a rate we believe they are capable of coping with we divide the squad into groups based on their ability. The coaches have the flexibility to move the players between the groups at any point they believe is beneficial to the player. Experience shows us that players get enjoyment and improve when playing/training with and against players of equal ability. Selection / De selection Squad sizes are dictated by how many teams we are allowed to enter into the local leagues and the coach to child ratio. As the squads move towards 11 a side from mini soccer, the club has to reduce the amount of players in that squad to meet league rules re squad sizes. The exception to this is where the Age Group coaches decide they can continue to coach a large group of players or even continue with an additional team. U6: Predominately skill based training sessions; the children will be introduced to matches as they near the time for playing regular matches. As the group progresses the coach will use their judgement to place the child in a training group that they feel best suites the Childs ability at that time. The coach will have the freedom to review the training groups at any time. Parents and children will be kept informed of any proposed changes that the coach intends to make that impact directly on the child. U7-U8: The club will hold a Parents meeting prior to the start of the U7s season. Predominately skill based training sessions; It is at this time that the children will play regular matches as directed by the league, the games will take place every Saturday morning, there are no league tables, results are collated for administrative purposes only. The club views the games as an opportunity for the children to play with confidence, the parents to watch with pride and the coaches to assess the development of the players and the team. The children, depending on numbers, will be divided into teams. The club will operate a policy of an Advanced team and a Developers team, the decision on who is placed in which group will be the responsibility of the coaches. The coaches will continually review the children s development so that they are within a group that supports theirs and the team s development. Parents and children will be kept informed of any proposed changes that the coach intends to make that impact directly on the child. U9-U10: Predominately skill based training sessions with more emphasis on team play than previous years. As the children will enter into a league structure where points are awarded for wins at U9s the coaches may feel it necessary to review the make up of the teams. The review will be done by the coaches and parents will be 2

3 kept informed of any proposed changes. The club will continue to view the games as an opportunity for the children to play with confidence, the parents to watch with pride and the coaches to assess the development of the players and the team. The club reserve the right to select a squad based on the ability of the teams to be able to compete at the appropriate level. If at the beginning of the U10s season the club is operating at least two teams all players and parents will be informed that at the culmination of that season the club will be forced to select a squad of players to enter the U11s season at 9 a side. If the club decide to enter one team then the squad numbers will have to be reduced, the responsibility of selecting the squad for U11 will be that of the Age Group Coaches in conjunction with the Head Coach. The criteria for selection and de selection will be performance, attitude, attendance, development potential and coach to child ratio. This will allow the team to compete at the appropriate ability level within the league. The club will discourage teams from recruiting players at the expense of existing players unless the team are in need of a specialist player (Goalkeeper). Parents should be made aware of the selection/de selection policy when they join the club and be reminded at the start of each season. U11-U12: Predominately skill based training sessions with more emphasis on team play than previous years. From September 2013, the squads will move to 9 aside football in accordance with FA requirements approved in The objective behind 9 aside football is the aim to give children more touches of the ball, and the Club is fully supportive of this move. The maximum squad size for 9 aside is 16 and the minimum is 12. All games will be played on a Sunday. The responsibility of selecting the squad for U11-U12 will be that of the Age Group Coaches in conjunction with the Head Coach. The criteria for selection and de selection will be performance, attitude, attendance, development potential and coach to child ratio. U13-U15: At U13 level, the squad will move to 11 aside football on much larger pitches. A balance of skill based training and team play sessions. As the players get older the club will endeavour to educate them on their roles and responsibilities as players at training and on match days. As they get older they will be expected to develop a positive attitude to training, match days, fellow players, officials and adults The responsibility of selecting the squad for U13-U15 will be that of the Age Group Coaches in conjunction with the Head Coach. The criteria for selection and de selection will be performance, attitude, attendance, development potential and coach to child ratio. The maximum squad size for 11 aside is 18 and the minimum is 14. All games will be played on a Sunday. 3

4 U16-U18 A balance of skill based training and team play sessions. As the players are older the club will expect the players to understand their roles and responsibilities as players within the club. They will be expected to represent the club with maturity and adopt a positive attitude to training, match days, fellow players, officials and adults. The responsibility of selecting the squad will be that of the Age Group Coaches in conjunction with the Head Coach. The criteria for selection and de selection will be performance, attitude, attendance, development potential and coach to child ratio. Training Sessions: The Emphasis is on Fun and Enjoyment Structured (planned), the session should have a theme and be progressive. It needs to be fun and challenging for the children based on their ability level. Every session should have a skills based section. Mini soccer is to focus on core skills (ball mastery etc). Older age groups should balance the session on skills (ball mastery,) retention and positional play. Age Groups: All teams will train together at the same venue. The coaches will decide on whether the groups will be mixed together for particular sessions or games. Coaches will be encouraged to move players between groups based on their progress (to reward and recognise progress) Parents (Appropriate Adult) must escort their child to the training venue and collect them at the conclusion of the training session (dropping the child off in the car park is not acceptable). Parents/Appropriate Adult must inform the coach if their child is being collected by any other person than themselves. That individual must make themselves known to the coach prior to leaving. Coaches within Age Groups are actively encouraged to lead on sessions with the different teams within their age group. Coaches will be encouraged to observe other Age Groups training sessions and be supported in taking sessions in other Age Groups. Coaches should always when possible have a footy match with NO interruption form the coach (either as a warm up or at the end of the session). This would be in addition to any condition game the coach uses as part of the session. We should encourage the children to learn from experience. Coaches are asked to set the children achievable goals (learn/practice skills). Coaches are encouraged to ask the children questions and LISTEN to their answers. 4

5 Match Day The Emphasis is on Fun and Enjoyment Allow the players to play: trust the players. Playing time should be equalled out through out the season. Match day players must get equal pitch time on the day. (As the teams are divided based on ability this should not be a problem for the coach). The coach will reserve the right to reduce a players playing time based on poor attendance or attitude. This will apply if the players attitude and attendance at training is cause for concern for the coach. The rotation of playing positions is a strategy that has to be handled carefully on match days. Players need notice and a period of time to understand the role of said position, 5 or 10 minutes is unfair on the player. Touchline Behaviour: Coaches will be expected to strictly adhere to the coaches code of conduct and must let the players play during matches, with positive encouragement from the touchline. Information from the line is in a series of occasional questions from the coaching staff. Patrolling the touchline giving continuous shouted instructions must not happen. Players will never make mistakes on purpose; they do not need a grown adult telling them they ve made a mistake in a public forum. Warming players up; Mini Soccer = small sided games (5v5) Older groups: more dynamic, (stretches, running, ball skills, keep ball). 5
