Thompson Phd Credit Hours: 3 Phone: , Office: Hum. 110 Office: Hum Course Description This course is a continuation of the work begun in SPAN 1002, Basic vocabulary, to communicate at the elementary level in everyday situations in the medical field. Note: This course is offered as a community service and is not intended to be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement or remove high school deficiencies for any degree program at Chattanooga State or any other college or university. Prerequisites SPAN 1002 Entry Level Standards The student is expected to have an English and Reading competence at the college level. Any student enrolled in a developmental English or Reading course is unable to register for any foreign language course at the same time. Text and workbook Spanish for Healthcare. Prentice-Hall, 2003 PSLO: (Goal- Program Student Learning Outcome) The goal of the Humanities/Fine Arts requirement is to enhance the understanding of students who, as citizens and educated members of their community, need to know and appreciate their own human cultural heritage and roots, Through the study of the Humanities and Fine Arts, such students will gain substantial knowledge and appreciation of their global heritage, both of its western and non-western aspects. Also, through study of Humanities and Fine Arts, students will develop an understanding, which they otherwise would not have, of the present as informed by the past. CSLO: Course Student Learning Outcomes At the end of this course the students should be able to: CSLO1 Use expressions that will help them in everyday scenarios in the medical field. CSLO2 Communicate with patients effectively in an elementary level. CSLO3 Greet patients and fill out their personal information forms. CSLO4 Read and write medical and some elementary non-medical expressions in Spanish. CSLO5 Have knowledge of medical practice, folk practice and disease issues of Spanish speaking countries, and how this may impact their future medical practice. Assessments A. Unit Tests evaluating oral, aural, writing and reading skills 40% B. Daily oral participation and group work 20% C. presentation on cultural and health issues 10

2 Other Learning Indicators or Objectives At the end of this course students should achieve: Score 70% on Oral Proficiency Interview CSLO1, CSLO2 Record accurately a patient health history interview. CSLO1. CSLO2, CSLO3, CSLO4 Score 70% on Reading Comprehension on a health related theme. CSLO4 Required Assessments Chapter Exams 5-10 Students will complete objective exams to demonstrate their understanding and skill in using and applying the core concepts of the chapter. Test will include aural and written exercises. CSLO1, CSLO4 Oral Working in a small group, students will produce for the class information on a chosen country, an endemic disease or culturally-bound syndrome, and an herbal remedy or treatment methodology that may be used to treat the disease problem. CSLO1, CSLO4,CSLO5 Oral Proficiency Interview Working with the Instructor, by appointment, Students will conduct a complete patient history interview, demonstrating their knowledge of norms of courtesy, their ability to asks the questions needed to acquire the information for their patient form, as well as their ability to accurately understand and record the responses. CSLO1, CSLO2, CSLO3, CSLO4 Final Exam Students will complete a comprehensive final exam assessing their knowledge of course content and the acquisition of needed aural and oral skills. 4 Preparation for surgery Instructional Activities To achieve the Student Learning Outcomes, students will engage in the following activities: I1 Using medical terms as well as vocabulary of anatomy and physiology in Spanish accurately by doing role-play scenarios and repetition drills. (CSLO1, CSLO2, CSLO3) I2 Working on vocabulary index cards, using physical gestures and responses, studying cultural norms of courtesy, deference and privacy. (CSLO1, CSLO4) I3 Doing dialogues in class constantly to practice listening skills and to learn which expressions are more appropriate for different social settings/situations. (CSLO1, CSLO2, CSLO3, CSLO4) I4 Using dialogues, question/answer, role-play, large and small group work to integrate vocabulary, grammatical structures, and social/cultural information to support development of an applicable linguistic skill. (CSLO1, CSLO2, CSLO3, CSLO4) I5 presentation concerning a Spanish speaking country, culturally-bound syndrome or endemic disease, traditional healing methodology and/or herbal remedy. (CSLO1,CSLO5) Evaluation Grading Grading Scale A = % Tests (5) 500 pts B = % Attendance, Participation/Homework/ C = % Tutorial conference 200 pts D= % Project 100 pts F= Below 65% Oral Proficiency Exercise 50 pts Final Exam 200 pts Total 1,050pts Course Delivery Forma Standard format: This format is the traditional format and may use an online format to provide access to static materials which include the syllabus, course material, contact information, and presentations. Faculty must make available when requested a copy of syllabus and any other instructor provided course materials, including their contact information. Faculty may require online activities and asignments to include online tests and submission of all written and online communications. The extent of online activities/assignments may vary by course but will be specified on the syllabus. Statement of Academic Integrity We are part of the Academic Integrity Program. 5 State. These students should notify the instructor immediately, two weeks into the semester, and should contact Disabilities Support Services (S-226, phone ), in order to discuss individual needs. The student must provide documentation of the disability so that reasonable accommodations can be requested in a timely manner. All students are expected to fulfill essential course requirements to receive a passing grade, with or without reasonable accommodations. Class Policies Tutorial/Conference: All students are required to come to see the instructor at least two (2) times during the course of the semester, during regular office hours. This will count 10 points toward the final grade. The subject of discussion will be any concerns you or the instructor may have about your work in this class. Attendance: if you have 6 unexcused hours of absence your final grade will be lowered a letter grade. For example if you would have an A you will receive a B, if you would have a B you will receive a C etc. Therefore, written and official documentation MUST be provided to the instructor in order for the student to be excused. Leaving class early is not acceptable unless prior approval is given. Arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving early will count as one full absence. You receive credit for attendance and participation in class so attendance is important. Classroom disruption: students should be actively engaged in classroom activities. Cell phones and beepers should be turned off before class starts and can only be used in emergencies. The student must talk to the instructor before class if such an emergency exists. The instructor reserves the right to remove from the classroom any student(s) who are being disruptive in class. Rude behavior and complaining out loud in class will not be tolerated. Make ups: if you must miss an exam, and hope to make it up, you must contact the instructor in advance. Documentation must be provided. Assignments: have to be turned in on the day they are due in class. If they are turned in on a different day, they MUST be accompanied by a written excuse or you will not receive full credit. Cheating: students will be given an F if caught cheating in class or on assignments given Oral presentations: students will be asked to do oral presentations with visual aids or Power Point. Oral proficiency dialogs: students will present a dialog, with a partner, at the end of the semester. Index cards: this is a good suggestion for learning vocabulary in each lesson. This class is governed by the terms and conditions stated in the current Chattanooga State Student Handbook. Additional or more specific guidelines may apply. The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus in writing at any time.
