1 Challenge & Champions Name of the lead organization or agency Emory University (Finalist Excellence in Summer Learning Awards) Name of Summer Program Challenge & Champions Mission Challenge & Champions mission is to bring high quality learning opportunities to a diverse group of metro-atlantic middle-grades youth and to expose these students to a college environment.* (actual mission statement) Vision To provide access to college resources to youth, particularly disadvantaged ones. To allow youth from a wide variety of backgrounds the opportunity to learn, work, and have fun together forming friendships and personal connections irrespective of age, race, ethnicity or income. Learning Goals and Other Types of Goals Challenge & Champions has a goal of providing an enrichment curriculum that teaches academic skills and content, independent learning skills, physical education skills, social problem-solving behaviors, and habits that will promote health and fitness. Program Purpose / Description Challenge & Champions program is a 3 week, full day multidisciplinary program. The program is focused on accelerated learning and is not considered remediation or tutorial. Population the Program Is Open To Grades 6 through 8 Special Population (e.g.: all girls; all boys) Homeless; low income; immigrant Selection Criteria Students submit a writing sample and letters of recommendation. Parents are asked to inventory their child s areas of strengths and weaknesses in the application form. Parents may also submit a child s Individual Education Plan (IEPs) developed by their schools, psychological assessments and grades. Page 1 of 6

2 Typology (e.g.: camps; school based; faith based; community based) Community based Assessment Tools and Techniques to Measure Progress Toolfind.org ; Survey monkey online survey to get feedback from youth Skills That Were Measured (if applicable) Challenge & Champions uses an evaluation from toolfind.org. The tool measures the program s strength and areas for improvement. Challenge & Champions provide regular and ongoing opportunities for youth feedback, and they incorporate youth feedback into the programs. They ask their students to provide informal feedback to the staff on a regular basis and also have them (as well as their parents) fill out a Survey monkey online survey to get their feedback in a more formal manner. The Results / Changes Was There A Positive Change? If yes, what was that change. Ways to Assess Progress (e.g.: Pre/Post Testing; Presentations; Showcases) During the third week of the program, a large extravaganza lasting 2 hours that builds on the format for the first two weeks. The extravaganza also includes a commencement with a formal processional, a guest speaker and a ceremony where students are individually called up to receive a certificate of completion. Type of Curriculum / Methodology (e.g.: pre-packaged curriculum; self-designed curriculum) Self-designed curriculum Tools and Methodology Used to Shaped Curriculum Challenge & Champions has been designed with the best principles from the National Institute on Outof-School Time including: Informal learning experiences that are engaging, relevant, and allow some measure of self-direction; Informal learning experiences that increase in rigor and or variety across the duration of student involvement; Informal learning experiences connected to students day-school learning experiences so that they see the relationship between formal and informal learning; Time and energy is devoted to developing a community of learners among the participants; Students feel a sense of independence as part of their participation in the program; Youth voices are listened to and incorporated into the decision making process; Youth have an opportunity to interact with community members and leaders; Schools are active partners; Youth are introduced to the world outside their local neighborhoods; Parents or guardian engagement increases likeliness of student retention and success; and business, university and school community support is a critical part of the program design as this support allows access to human and financial resources. All academic courses are multidisciplinary but have a focus in one of four content areas (language arts, mathematics, science or social studies), use differentiated instruction and technology, and are designed Page 2 of 6

3 to include reading and writing. Approach To Learning (e.g.: theme based; project based; problem based) Accelerated learning; Multidisciplinary; Theme based Activity Highlights (e.g.: creative activities; college visits; field trips) Special Classes are designed by all 7 of the master teachers based on what they feel students will benefit from and what participants have expressed interest in. Examples include: nutrition; team building; gender and etiquette; developing a study pace at home; study skills; dealing with peer conflict, step dancing; learning about college from a university admissions officer; and financial literacy. Physical Education course that highlight new learning opportunities such as Wide World of Sports where students learn about cricket, bocce ball and Para-Olympics events are offered in addition to traditional Physical Education courses. Examples of Summer Culture Sports: dancing Partnerships Challenge & Champions is anchored in Emory University s Division of Educational Studies where there is a focus on urban education. Challenge & Champions also partners with: Atlanta Urban Ministries, Atlanta Public Schools Homeless Shelter Liaison, DeKalb County Schools Social Worker, the Center for Pan Asian Community Services, the Latin American Association, Emory University Hispanic Community Outreach, the Georgia Afterschool Investment Council, and the United Way. Staff Development Tools and Techniques Challenge & Champions provides teachers with the opportunity to develop tools on their own and collectively as a part of staff development. In doing so, teachers are encouraged to reach out to the university faculty and resources across the university and community to enrich the classes offered in Challenge & Champions. Staff Titles Master teachers (7); Teacher Coach (1); MAT graduate pre-service teachers (21); undergraduates students who act as camp counselors (6); Director (1); Office Manager (1) Types of Staff Training The Challenge & Champions program provides a theory/practice learning opportunity for the graduate students in Emory University s Division of Educational Studies who are preparing to become middle and high school teachers through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Each summer approximately 21 graduate pre-service students, as part of a graduate course in education that they take with the Challenge & Champions Director, Dr. Karen Falkenberg, act in the role as assistants and observers to the 4 academic master teachers who Page 3 of 6

4 are teaching the middle grades pupils. Education Level of Staff College degree; College students. Each summer approximately 21 graduate pre-service students, as part of a graduate course in education that they take with the Challenge & Champions Director, Dr. Karen Falkenberg, act in the role as assistants and observers to the 4 academic master teachers who are teaching the middle grades pupils. Types of Staff (e.g.: paid staff; volunteer staff) Paid staff; staff compensated with stipends and/or college credit; Hours Committed to Staff Training / Professional Development Sustainability Because Challenge & Champions aligns so well with the University s outreach mission to the community and the Division of Educational Studies goals for its MAT program, program leadership feels that there is built-in sustainability. Challenge & Champions is always striving for additional support to be able to provide as many youth with scholarships as possible.
