LATE REGISTRATION Students who register during the first week of the term, during late registration, will already be one week behind. Students who fall into this category are expected to catch up with all of Week #1 and Week #2's work by the end of Week #2. No exceptions, since two weeks constitutes a significant percentage of the term's lessons. Please the instructor immediately if you are a late registrant. Students who do not feel they can meet this deadline should not enroll in the class. Failure to comply with these requests will, again, delay my response to you. PREREQUISITES SOC 2275 Introduction to Sociology, is a prerequisite for this course. ENTRANCE COMPETENCIES Basic academic writing abilities (including knowledge of APA citation format). Ability to read challenging theoretical work. Understanding of what it means to think critically and synthesize material. Willingness to engage in classroom discussion and ask questions. Good time management. A Note about Reading Students should view this as a reading and writing intensive course. This is a high level course where you will be expected to puzzle through the challenge that is theory. You will not be able to read a theoretical perspective or classical writing once and understand it, so prepare to read items several times. All of the reading is packed with complex conceptual content, which together, we will puzzle over and unpack. If these concepts remain abstract and you cannot see how they relate to real world situations, you do not know theory. You are expected to follow the syllabus SOC 4420/5520 XTIA * KING Page 2

3 schedule of readings and activities. This does not mean that you have a complete understanding of what you read each week, but that you are prepared to do the work to gain that understanding. Interaction on the discussion board is not only encouraged but expected. How to Read Theory Remember, the required reading for this term is not easy. These readings should be studied and analyzed, not skimmed over. Begin by reading to understand not to memorize, once you understand you'll be able to remember. Focus on the central ideas or concepts, at first, not the details or "facts. Or, look for the logic and meaning. Do not read sentence by sentence, read paragraph by paragraph. What I mean is that often a sentence becomes understandable in the context of the whole paragraph. Theory is not designed for quick reading, it's designed to be read and then contemplated or thought about and then reread. So, read small sections and then think about what you've read and then reread it. In the beginning you will read and stop and read and stop frequently. Don't worry, that is a natural process. Try to immerse yourself in the internal logic of the theorist before you decide whether or not you agree, much like looking at the world through their eyes. Agreement or disagreement should come after understanding. There is some merit in each of the theories we will study, or we wouldn't be studying them. Don't let your own opinions, theoretical assumptions, or politics get in the way of understanding each theory. Note about Course History We will draw from both the classical period as well as the major contemporary developments of sociology through an examination of major figures and ideas of sociological theory in its historical context. The selection of theoretical perspectives discussed in this course is selective but not arbitrary. The readings for this course are almost exclusively from European white males since that is the source of tradition as it is currently perceived (modified from Marti, 2007). STUDENT EXPECTATION STATEMENT Students are expected to participate in the course via exchanges (or other communication) with the instructor, by reading the assigned readings, submitting comments to the discussion forums, submitting assignments, and completing exams in a timely fashion. Students are expected to check their s regularly and announcements at least every 48 hours. 4 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a survey of sociological theory with emphasis on theorists, their works, and their contributions to modern sociological theory. PURPOSE (COURSE OBJECTIVES) This course is designed to: 1. give students an in-depth look at current theoretical perspectives in sociology; 2. encourage students to examine and compare theories critically; 3. help students develop new and different ways of seeing the social world and give them the theoretical and conceptual tools to understand the world in a way that goes well beyond common sense notions of everyday life; 4. make abstract notions and theoretical concepts meaningful to students thinking; 5. foster students participation in critical discourse about course materials; and 6. develop students analytical thinking and provide the theoretical tools to address a wide range of social phenomena. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. understand the core notions of contemporary sociological theories by demonstrating familiarity with some of their key concepts; 2. grasp some of the socio-historical contexts in which the theories developed; 3. examine the meaning and assess the importance of these sociological theories and concepts for our world today; and 4. express reflections on theory competently in written and oral discourse. 5. apply the knowledge gained from this course to human concerns from diverse geographical settings. COMBINED UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE COURSE This course is a combined graduate and undergraduate course. The workload and requirements are not the same. Within the course there will be a SOC 4420 tab, which will house the discussion board expectations and assignment expectations for those enrolled in the undergraduate (SOC 4420) section. There will also be a separate SOC 5520 tab, which will house the discussion board expectations and assignment expectations for graduate (SOC 5520) students. Each weekly folder will have different folders with your course readings. All of you are responsible for chapter readings out of the assigned book. 5 RESEARCH COMPONENT You will complete Three Essays. This paper requires you to do some additional research on theory. You must use refereed journal articles or credible books. Limit internet materials. You are encouraged to utilize the Troy library for this project. In every etroy course, students should read all information presented in the Blackboard course site and should periodically check for updates at least every 48 hours. TROY All students were required to obtain and use the TROY address that is automatically assigned to them as TROY students. All official correspondence (including bills, statements, e- mails from instructors and grades, etc.) will be sent ONLY to the troy.edu address. All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct address is listed in Blackboard by the beginning of Week #1. is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid address is provided. Failure on your part to do so can result in your missing important information that could affect your grade. Your troy.edu address is the same as your Web Express user ID following Students are responsible for the information that is sent to their TROY account. You can get to your account by logging onto the course and clicking Login. You will be able to forward your TROY to your earmy account. You must first access your TROY account through the TROY link found on the Web site. After you log in to your TROY account, click on options on the left hand side of the page. Then click on forwarding. This will enable you to set up the address to which you will forward your . 6 ATTEDANCE POLICY In addition to interaction via Blackboard and contact, students are required to contact the instructor via by the third day of the term to say that they understand the course expectations. Although physical class meetings are not part of this course, participation in all interactive, learning activities is required. MAKE-UP WORK POLICY/LATE WORK Missing any part of this schedule may prevent completion of the course. If you foresee difficulty of any type (i.e., an illness, employment change, etc.) which may prevent completion of this course, notify me as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in failure for an assignment and/or failure of the course. (See Attendance Policy.) If I have not heard from you by the deadline dates for assignments, exams, or forums, no make-up work will be allowed (unless extraordinary circumstances exist, such as hospitalization). Requests for extensions must be made in advance and accompanied by appropriate written documentation. Computer problems is not an acceptable excuse. Late Papers A paper submitted past the deadline will automatically lose 50% of the total points it earns. You will have 24 hours from the due date to submit your paper (via since the Submission Zone will be closed). Anything submitted past the 24 hours will earn a zero. If you experience a technical issue, please text message me immediately. INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY Missing any part of the Course Schedule may prevent completion of the course. If circumstances will prevent the student from completing the course by the end of the term, the student should complete a request for an incomplete grade. Note: A grade of incomplete or INC is not automatically assigned to students, but rather must be requested by the student by submitting a Petition for and Work to Remove an Incomplete Grade Form. Requests for an incomplete grade must be made on or before the date of the final assignment or test of the term. The form will not be available after the last day of the term. A grade of INC does not replace an F and will not be awarded for excessive absences. An INC will only be awarded to student presenting a valid case for the inability to complete coursework by the conclusion of the term. It is ultimately the instructor s decision to grant or deny a request for an incomplete grade, subject to the policy rules below. Policy/Rules for granting an Incomplete (INC). An incomplete cannot be issued without a request from the student. To qualify for an incomplete, the student must: Have completed over 50% of the course material and have a documented reason for requesting incomplete (50% means all assignments/exams up to and including the midterm point, test, and/or assignments.) 7 Be passing the course at the time of their request. If both of the above criteria are not met an incomplete cannot be granted. An INC is not a substitute for an F. If a student has earned an F by not submitting all the work or by receiving an overall F average, then the F stands. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION All etroy courses at Troy University utilize the Blackboard Learning System. In every etroy course, students should read all information presented in the Blackboard course site and should periodically check for updates-at least every 48 hours. Remember: This is not a correspondence course in which a student may work at his/her own pace. Each week there are assignments, online discussions, online activities and/or exams with due dates. Refer to the schedule at the end of the syllabus for more information. METHOD OF EVALUATION All assignments and quizzes have a certain point value; therefore, this is a points-only course where all points are equally weighted. There will not be a curve and there is no extra credit. The grade you receive at the close of the course is the grade you have earned. To that end, you are welcome to use each other and me as much as possible to puzzle through challenging concepts and to make sure that you understand terms, concepts, and the theories as a whole; however, all final papers should be your own work. This is a fast-paced course with several exercises to help you better understand the material. The content of the course builds on itself throughout the length of the class; consequently, it is important that you master early concepts, as they will become building blocks for information introduced later in the course. While I am willing to help you as much as I can, you are responsible for asking for help. I will not be able to magically find extra points to add to your overall score, but I will do everything I reasonably can to help you meet your goals in this course and to maintain a respectful classroom atmosphere. 8 Grading Schedule I typically grade the first part of each week after a deadline so that you have prompt feedback while working on the current week. You will know that I have completed grading when I post an announcement stating that everything has been finished. Once you see the announcement, it is appropriate to alert me to any grading errors or ask for clarification on a specific score. You are welcome to work ahead. Each week you will have responsibilities in the discussion board and in completing various written assignments. To submit work, please read below. Textbook and Additional Reading Each week you are expected to read the chapter assigned from the textbook and, depending on your course designation (undergrad. or graduate), complete additional readings. Within each articles folder, you will have an instruction on how many articles you are expected to read. Please make sure that EACH article AND your assigned textbook chapter/s appear on your Weekly Memo. Discussion Board Activity The discussion board tab is on the left of the screen. Each discussion will also be linked to the weekly folder. You may use either avenue to access your discussions. Discussion guidelines are listed in the tab that corresponds with whether you are taking SOC 4420 or SOC Remember, discussions should be substantive (minimum 250 words) and include references. You must reply to a minimum of two classmates for full points (preference for replying to discussion posts rather than Internet exercises or Engaging Questions) use the name of the classmate to whom you are replying, and provide substantive replies as well. 9 Assignment Format and Submission When you go into the Course Material tab, you will find a weekly layout. With the exception of the Discussions and the three essays, all assignments will be submitted to the Assignment Feature, which I call the Submission Zone. The appropriate Submission Zone will be labeled with the name of the assignment that should be submitted, and located in the weekly folder of the week that it is due. The three essays should be uploaded to the Turnitin.com link found in the weekly folder. Review the syllabus calendar for assignment due dates. Original discussion posts (your answer to the question NOT internet exercises) are due on Fridays and all other weekly material is due on Sundays 11:59 p.m. CST. Assignments should conform to academic format and follow APA standards. Papers should be double-spaced, 12-pt font (Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman ONLY), and have 1 margins. They should have been proof-read and spellchecked. Please indent the first line of each paragraph 5 spaces (or push the tab key on your computer). Please save all documents in doc, docx, or rtf formats. If a page length is designated, please write to the bottom of the page. Failure to format your paper correctly will result in the loss of points. Write your first and last name only in the top left-hand corner of your paper. You do not need a cover page or abstract, but you are expected to provide a references page when you cite source material, including the textbook. All papers should be uploaded/attached appropriately in the submission zone. Papers that are copy/pasted into the textbox will not be graded. Please see the tutorial in the Tutorial tab. Turnitin.com: Each of your essays will be submitted to the turnitin.com submission zone. You do not need a password or any other information to submit your paper. Turnitin.com is a contextual comparison software that detects plagiarism. Less than 20% of your paper should be quoted. If you quote more than 20%, you will lose points. Matches for any one source over 12% without proper citation will be scrutinized. It is imperative that you do your own work. APA format This is the format used for this course. If you are unfamiliar with APA format, please review the resources available to you within the Tutorial/APA Resources folder. While standard APA format includes a cover page and abstract, you are not required to provide either for papers written in this class. You are required to provide a references page. Any time you support your own statements with information that is not your own, you must cite your sources both within SOC 4420/5520 XTIA * KING Page 9

10 text and in the reference page. There are many useful resources online if the ones offered to you do not make sense. Remember, we are using the 6 th edition of the APA manual. If you fail to cite your sources and provide a references page, you will earn a zero on your assignment. EXAMINATION SCHEDULE & INSTRUCTIONS Quizzes You will have weekly quizzes. These should be considered a review. Each quiz will have 10 questions and will be worth 10 points. You will have 15 minutes to complete them (the week 8 quiz covers two chapters so is worth 20 points and you will have 25 minutes to complete it). Quizzes may consist of, but are not limited to: matching, fill-in-the-blank, short-answer, multiple choice, true/false, etc. You will find each weekly quiz within the weekly folder. It should be completed by the weekly deadline Sunday, 11:59 p.m. CST. INTERNET ACCESS This is an online class. Students must have access to a working computer and access to the Internet. Students can use a TROY computer lab (if available), a public library, etc., to insure they have access. Not having a computer or computer crashes are not acceptable excuses for late work. Have a back-up plan in place in case you have computer problems. Encountering Technical Issues While Testing I will only reset an exam if it appears, from my end, that there was a technical issue, OR if you have verification from Tech. Services that you encountered a problem. Any test that is reset must be completed by our agreed upon date or you will earn a zero (or however many points you earned during the first attempt), and the exam will be password protected. In the event of a campus-wide blackout, I will make arrangements to extend test-times for all students in the course. There are several items that can cause exams to lock up or receive error messages. Students should never use the navigational tools (refresh, back, forward) buttons during test even when the test seems to be functioning oddly. Blackboard will definitely lock you out when you use those buttons. However, the most common problems arise when students use wireless Internet, have certain toolbars or have not updated their Java to the latest version and removed all other older versions from their computer. We highly recommend that students plug into the wall *(Use a LAN line) when testing. Wireless is like a cell-phone signal, once the signal is lost Blackboard logs the student out. Next, if students have not updated and removed older versions of Java it will also cause issues. Students can check versions and the number of Java icons by going to the control panel, click add/remove programs remove all versions of Java except the current version, which is Java 6 update 21. If you do not see Java 6 update 23, it needs to be downloaded by going to the Java SOC 4420/5520 XTIA * KING Page 10

11 Website then select "Do I Have Java". It will run a test to determine if you have the latest version and then prompt you to download the newest version if you do not have it. In addition, tool bars such as Google, Yahoo, MSN block the Java applet from running, which is a necessary component of blackboard test. You should remove these tool bars by following the same instructions listed in the beginning of this for the removal of Java. Next, you need to clear out the cache by going to Tools, Internet Options, browsing history click delete, delete temporary Internet files and cookies. In addition, if a student tries to access the test when it is about to close it will sometimes error out. Moving between Internet pages causes your computer to work harder to maintain both browsers, which increases the likelihood of test freezing up. Another common issue is essay style questions. Students will often spend a lot of time on essay questions. Without forcing the page to refresh, Blackboard will log students out of the test. Students should think about Blackboard and their internet browser as if it is an online banking system. If you spend 15 minutes idle on a banking page, it prompts a message that you ve been inactive on this page, click okay to continue to work or the system will automatically log off. Blackboard relies on the internet browser and when the browser is idle for a long period of time, unfortunately, it is similar in logging students off the page. As a rule, students should click save at least every 15 minutes on essay questions to keep Blackboard from logging off. If the questions are presented one at a time you do not need to save as the questions are saved automatically when you move to the next question. If questions are presented all at once, you should save at least every five questions(multiple choice, true/false, etc.) using the save at the bottom of the page. SOC 4420/5520 XTIA * KING Page 11

Go through the orientation the orientation for both undergraduate and graduate online learners has been designed to assist students to have a successful educational experience with their online programs. Information on how to access Blackboard and other learning tools are included in the orientation along with valuable resources on how to learn in the online environment. Make sure that your computer meets the technical requirements and that you have adequate Internet connection. Students must have access to a working computer that they have administrator rights on and access to the Internet. Students can use University computer labs, a public library, etc. to access the Internet but some courses may require the ability to download course related software. Make sure you are ready for online learning etroy works on nine week terms. Does your learning style match an accelerate course pace? Do you have the time to dedicate to an interactive course? etroy courses are not self-paced courses, you must meet all the timelines established by the instructor and participate in all activities assigned. Read your academic catalog your academic catalog is your bible for your online degree program. Please familiarize yourself with your degree program. The undergraduate and graduate catalogs can be found online at Pay close attention to admission requirements and prerequisite courses. Know the requirements for your degree plan. If you have questions your academic counselor will assist you. Access your degree program a link is available for students to view all degree requirements, prerequisites, major requirements and minors, if applicable. Be sure to read and follow your syllabus. 15 Be sure to register during the registration timeframes There are four weeks of registration for each term. Register early and order your books. etroy runs on nine week terms. Waiting until the first week of classes to register and order books is too late. 16 etroy Policies and Procedures Revised January 2012 etroy COURSES AT TROY UNIVERSITY All etroy courses at Troy University utilize Blackboard Learning System. In every etroy course, students should read all information presented in the Blackboard course site and should periodically check for updates at least every 48 hours. TROY All students were required to obtain and use the TROY address that is automatically assigned to them as TROY students. All official correspondence (including bills, statements, e- mails from instructors and grades, etc.) will be sent ONLY to the troy.edu address. All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct address is listed in Blackboard by the beginning of Week #1. is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid address is provided. Failure on your part to do so can result in your missing important information that could affect your grade. Your troy.edu address is the same as your Web Express user ID following Students are responsible for the information that is sent to their TROY account. You can get to your account by logging onto the course and clicking Login. You will be able to forward your TROY to your GoArmyEd account if applicable.
