5 FAMILY CIRCLE TENNIS CENTER Since opening in the spring of 2001, the Family Circle Tennis Center has consistently brought first class entertainment to the Charleston community on a year-round basis. Beyond the Volvo Car Open, this facility has hosted a number of key events that have brought worldwide exposure to Daniel Island, the City of Charleston, and the State of South Carolina. The Family Circle Tennis Center is constantly welcoming new members to their tennis community. Within the FCTC there are more than three hundred memberships, totaling five hundred players. Among those players there are around one hundred tennis teams that use FCTC as home base. The center offers 14 clay courts, six hard courts and four 10 & under courts. All of these courts are lighted for night play. Members also receive reserved seating during the tournament and can enjoy many other tournaments and tennis socials throughout the year. Members can also enjoy the fully stocked pro shop featuring Nike, Adidas and much more brand name apparel and equipment. Additionally, the Tennis Center offers racquet stringing services and there are locker rooms for the member s convenience. The FCTC runs many different tournaments each year. This year the facility is hosting the annual Dunlop Junior Tennis Championship. Other tournaments on site include South Carolina Combo Championship and the Holiday Classic. Offering more than just tennis, the Family Circle Tennis Center is the perfect venue for activities including concerts, camps, cultural festivals, and other athletic events. Many top musical acts have appeared in Volvo Car Stadium, which has received glowing reviews as Charleston s premier outdoor arena and is considered the perfect setting for a concert under the stars. In summer of 2014, MWTennis Academy arrived at the Family Circle Tennis Center, offering programming for all ages and levels. Adult instruction includes nutrition, fitness training, team clinics and top-notch tennis lessons. Junior programming serves children ages 4 to 18 and includes academies for both entrylevel and full-time tournament players, the only home to touring WTA players in South Carolina. MWTennis summer camp sessions provide competitive tennis training, as well as other activities including arts and crafts, nature hikes, and team games during Adventure Camp sessions. MWTennis is based on the principles that achievement and development occur through hard work, effort and focus. This mindset will ensure that any player who wishes to excel will be able to learn, retain and apply the proper knowledge base in every situation. 11 VOLVO CAR OPEN MEDIA CENTER The Volvo Car Open Media Center has been designed to provide a comfortable working environment for all accredited media. Working space will be made available with priority going to daily deadline print and electronic media. Space is limited, and guests cannot be accommodated. Hours of Operation Daily: 8am until two (2) hours after play. Contact Number Welcome Desk: (843) Volvo Car Open Media Center Welcome Desk As the tournament marketing agency, Obviouslee Marketing supervises the Volvo Car Open Media Center. Their staff is available to assist working media and facilitate coverage of the tournament. Credentials Media credentials are processed prior to the start of the tournament. All credentials are nontransferable. Anyone without proper accreditation will have their credential revoked immediately. Only credentialed media will have admission into the Volvo Car Open Media Center. Interview Requests All players will be available for postmatch media conferences following their matches if specifically requested through on-site WTA Communications Managers. In the case of a player competing in more than one match in a day, that player has the option to grant both print and electronic interviews after her last match is completed. Every reasonable effort will be made to satisfy individual interview requests (in addition to the standard postmatch interview). All such requests must be made in advance through the WTA Communications Managers. Post-Match Interview Transcripts McKee Court Reporting will process transcripts as soon as possible following the interview, and will make printed versions available at the information table. Player Information WTA Communications Managers are available to provide updated information including bios, head-to-heads, results, match notes, and other data. Statistics and Results Real-time scorecards, match results, and updated draws are available at all times. Media Parking Follow signs to Lot 5. A parking pass is provided at check-in. 12 PHOTOGRAPHER GUIDELINES RULES TO FOLLOW Photographers must respect the following rules to retain privileges. 1. A photographer may not ask a player to pose prior to or during a match. 2. If a player or official requests that no pictures be taken in a certain situation, photographers must conform. 3. Photographers may enter Volvo Car Stadium photography areas. They must remain behind the line, which outlines their position reserved on the court. Any photographer who disregards this regulation will be restricted from Stadium Court and could lose accreditation. VOLVO CAR STADIUM There are photographer benches located directly across from the umpire s chair on the east side of Volvo Car Stadium. To gain access to Stadium Court, photographers should enter through the player entry tunnel in the Southeast corner of the stadium. No photographer will be allowed into Stadium Court without proper credentials. Volvo Car Open Official Photographers 4. 16 CHAMPIONS REVIEW Rosie Casals (1973) Casals has the distinction of being the tournament s first winner, and her winner s check of $30,000 was the biggest single check won by any female professional tennis player in Her match against Nancy Richey in the final was the first women s tennis match seen on the NBC network. Chris Evert ( , 1981, 1984 and 1985) In 1974, Evert made a spectacular debut beginning a string of victories that led to five consecutive singles titles ( ), a record that still stands today. She then won another three titles in 1981, 1984 & 1985, bringing the count to eight. Evert has amassed numerous Cup records including most titles won, most matches won, most consecutive singles matches won, fewest games in a singles final and most consecutive sets won. Tracy Austin ( ) Austin followed Evert with back-to-back titles in 1979 and When she won the coveted trophy in 1979, Austin became, and remains today, the youngest Family Circle Cup Champion at 16 years, 4 months. Martina Navratilova ( , 1988, 1990) Navratilova won the first of her four Family Circle Cup singles titles in That year, she became the second player to win both the singles and doubles title in the same year. Steffi Graf ( , 1989, 1993) In 1986, fans caught a glimpse into the future of Graf s tennis career when she beat reigning Champion Chris Evert to win the singles title. It marked her first pro title in her career. Graf won the Cup again in 1987, 1989 and Gabriela Sabatini ( ) This young Argentine followed Graf to earn the coveted Cup title. Sabatini, who made her professional debut at the Cup in 1985, won the crown in 1991 and then again in Conchita Martinez ( ) Martinez won the singles Championship four years after her 1990 debut. The following year, she became one of only six players to win the title again as defending Champion. Martinez is also one of eight women who have won the Family Circle Cup more than once. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (1996) At the 1996 Cup, Sanchez-Vicario became the third woman in the tournament s history to win both the singles and doubles title. She holds the tournament record for most consecutive years seeded (14) and most consecutive years played (16). Martina Hingis (1997, 1999) Nicknamed the Swiss Miss, Hingis won her first Cup title in On the first day of the tournament, she became the youngest No.1 ranked player at 16 years, 6 months, and 1 day. Her final against Monica Seles in 1997 was the first Championship to be decided by a third set tiebreak. Playing 31 games, the final match broke an existing record of most games in a singles final (27). Amanda Coetzer (1998) Coetzer scored the biggest victory of her career when she captured the 1998 singles Championship. She battled through some tough matches, but with the victory, set a record as the lowest seeded winner in the tournament s history. (No. 4 seed) Mary Pierce (2000) Pierce captured her first Cup title over Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, dropping only 11 games. Losing only one game in the finals, Pierce tied the record for the shortest singles final (56 minutes), which has since been replaced in 2010, fewest games played in a singles final (13), and fewest games lost in a tournament (12). 16

Caroline Wozniacki (2011) Wozniacki's third trip to the Family Circle Cup was the luck she needed as she won this Premier title for the first time, surviving some tough early challenges, but easing past Elena Vesnina in the final, 6-2, 6-3. Andrea Petkovic (2014) Andrea Petkovic defeated Jana Cepelova 7-5, 6-2 in 2014 for her third WTA title, her first since Petkovic has credited this win as a different and rewarding experience marking her first win since the former top 10 player struggled with injuries.
