1 Creating a Participant List Using D2L Participant lists are used to capture data on individual students. Participant lists are optional when using anonymous polling. However, participant polling is a great tool for collecting assessment and participation data. Create a participant list from D2L Creating a participant list from D2L requires a.csv file. 1. Open a course in D2L to create a student participant list. 2. Go to the Grades tab, then click on Enter Grades and click on the Export button located on the top left of the screen. 3. Choose Both under the Key Field, and check the boxes for Last Name, First Name. Uncheck Points grade, Grade Scheme, Final Calculated Grade, and Final Adjusted Grade. 4. Scroll to the bottom and click the Export to Excel button. 5. Double click on the exported file to open it in Excel. Name the student file and save it to your computer. 6. Open the Excel file you exported from and change the headings to the following: 7. Remove all columns except First name and Last Name. 8. Now copy the Device ID heading and IDs from the.csv file that were sent by the ETC and paste the information into A1( the first column). 9. On the back of the clicker, find two alphanumeric identifications. One is the manufacture label which is the device ID number. The second is the alphanumeric label identifying the kit and clicker.

3 10. Place the kit ID Letter and number (contains kit letter and clicker pouch number) into that column. The User ID will be the indicator to which student and the response card are related. For example, Ian Schoenfuss will always be assigned to clicker K1. You may save this file or print the file for your reference. The Participate List for this class can be used throughout the semester using this scheme. 11. Remove all headings (Device ID in column A1, Last Name in B1, First Name in C1, User ID in D1) from the.csv file. The user ID can be the labeled letter and number on the clicker, or the student s ID number. Use the Save As feature from the file menu. Click Save as type: on the pop up window by using the drop down arrow and choose CSV (Comma delimited) and Save. Click Yes on the pop up window. Go to File then Close to close the Excel application. Importing.CSV file to TurningPoint 12. Double click on the TurningPoint desktop icon to open the program. 13. Click on the Manage tab and then click on the Participant List button. 14. Choose New from the drop down menu. You may name the new participant list in the Name box. 15. Choose the Create Manually radio button and then click Create List. 16. Click on the Participant icon on the dashboard.
4 17. Choose Import/CSV from the drop down menu listing. Choose your saved.csv file from your computer and click the Open button. Your participant list will open. Note: The date and time the file was created is used as the default naming scheme. 18. Click Import. Click the Save and Close icon and name the file. The file will appear in the left hand side of your manage window. Note: The Save icon automatically defaults to the TurningPoint 5 folder in the My Documents folder of your computer. How to move a Participant List to a flash drive Now that you have saved your participant list(s) to your office computer, you will need to put the file on your flash drive. Take your flash drive to the classroom and plug it in the USB port (located on the front panel of the classroom computer). Double click on the TurningPoint desktop icon to open the software. Click on the Manage tab. Click on the Participant List icon and choose Export. Select your list and click on the button and choose your flash drive then click Save.
5 Now that you have your participant list saved on your flash drive, you can take it to the classroom computer. How to move a Participant List to a classroom computer from a flash drive 1. Place your flash drive in the USB port located on the front of the computer and double click on the TurningPoint desktop icon. 2. Click on the Manage tab. 3. Click on the Participant List icon and choose Import from the drop down menu. The Import Participant List pop up window will appear. 4. Choose Turning Point Participant List using the radio button, and then click the Choose File button. The computer pop up window will appear. 5. Choose your flash drive from the computer drive listing, find your TurningPoint Participant file and click the Open button. Your file will appear in the left hand side of the window in the file manager area. Deleting a participant list from the TurningPoint file manager listing Click on the Manage tab. Select the unwanted participant list from the file manager area. Right mouse click on the file and choose Delete from the drop down menu.
