Ask children what they think they will learn about the Williams sisters in this book. Encourage children to use their knowledge of tennis and other sports to think about the book. Ask questions such as: What sport do you like best? Why? Have you ever played or watched a tennis game? What did you enjoy about the game? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book is about two sisters, Venus and Serena Williams, who are star tennis players. Suggested language: Turn to page 2. Here is Venus Williams with her dad. What are they both holding? When Venus Williams was young, her dad took her to a park. She did not play on a slide or in a fi eld. What do you think Venus did at the park? Page 3: Soon Venus loved tennis as much as her dad did. Say loved. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word loved? Find loved on the page. What game do you love playing? Page 4: Turn to page 4. Explain that Venus started playing tennis with her younger sister, Serena. Venus and Serena practiced together. They got better and better. Remember that labels can help you understand pictures. Find Venus in the photo. Find Serena. Page 5: Turn to page 5. Sometimes the Williams sisters played together. The author says: They played against other girls and won big matches. A tennis match is a contest. Look at the Williams sisters in the photo. How do you think they feel about winning? What was their prize? Now turn back to the beginning of the book and read to fi nd out more about the Williams sisters and their life in tennis. 3 Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: What did you learn about becoming a strong tennis player by reading this book? How do you think the Williams sisters feel about each other? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Venus and Serena Williams are sisters. Venus and Serena are both great tennis players. Venus and Serena compete against each other, but they still love each other. It s possible to compete against someone in a game and still be friends. Working hard at a sport makes you a better, stronger player. The photos help readers to better understand the words. The author includes many details about the Williams sisters to make the book interesting. The author s reason for writing this book is to share information about the Williams sisters Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Fluency Have children choose a page to read aloud. Point out that the text includes some quotations even though there isn t actual dialogue. Have children read these sections with a change of tone to signify they are quoting someone. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Change Words Materials: index cards, two boxes. Write the following words from the book on index cards: play, learn, love, miss, help, look, change, work. Put the index cards in one box. Write the infl ectional endings ed, --ing on index cards and put them in another box. Ask children to choose a card from each box and make a word. Work with children to use the words in original sentences. Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables they hear in words from the book: tennis, sometimes, learning, better, matches everything, championship, important. Have them clap on each syllable: ten-nis; some-times; learn-ing; bet-ter; match-es; eve-ry-thing; cham-pi-on-ship. 3 Lesson 30:

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on BLM 30.8 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension on Skill Understanding Characters Remind children that they can tell more about characters in a book by paying attention to what they say, what they do, and how they feel. Model how to think about understanding characters: Think Aloud I read that Venus always helped her younger sister. Venus said she likes to win, but she still makes sure her younger sister has everything even if she doesn t have anything. That tells me more about Venus. I know she really loves her younger sister and looks out for her. Practice the Skill Have children share examples of what characters in other books said, did, and felt. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Think about the Williams sisters. Why would it be fun to watch them play tennis together? 4 Lesson 30:

English Language Learners Front-Load Vocabulary Make sure children know the meanings of the following words: tennis court, racket, net, practiced, matches, U.S. Open, championship. When possible, use the illustrations to help children picture the vocabulary. Oral Language Development Check the children s comprehension, using a dialogue that best matches their English proficiency level. Speaker 1 is the teacher, Speaker 2 is the child.
