Introduction If we can help teachers harness the power of today s technology as a tool to enhance and support their efforts, computers can make a positive difference in the quality of teaching and learning. Dockterman (2003) Overview The third and final category, the Classroom Computer Enrichment Center, includes all software and Web activities that support your curriculum. You will be exploring a variety of resources in this session, and will then create another lesson plan. Objectives By the end of this session, you will be able to: Discuss the use of technology in the lower grades and its impact on learning in the upper grades. Select and describe in the discussion forum a Web site that can be used by students in a classroom enrichment center. Identify software resources you have available for student use that can be used in an enrichment center. Plan and design an activity for a classroom enrichment center. If you haven t done so already, download and print the Assignment Checklist to keep track of your assignments for this course.

The Impact of Using the Computer Read the article "Using Online Resources: It's Elementary Too", and consider the following quote: The debate goes on as to whether or not computers should have a place in the elementary (particularly primary) classroom. Many times I have heard, "Put the new hardware where the older students will benefit and give their old hardware to the younger ones." VaReane Heese, 2001 How do you feel about this statement? After reading the article, share you thoughts in the discussion forum. Justify your statements by referring to the readings and examples from your professional practice. Refer to the discussion rubric to review the expectations for participating in online discussions in this course.

Enriching the Curriculum Think about ways that you can enhance your curriculum by using the computer center in your classroom for enrichment activities. Software used for enrichment activities can include simulations, drill and practice, tutorials, and games. The first thing to do is look at your curriculum. Then think about where the software fits in. Refer back to the articles you read in Session 1, "Pump Up Your Computer: How to Transform One Classroom Computer into a Powerful Learning Tool, Part s" and "Independent Study: How to Transform One Classroom Computer into a Powerful Learning Tool, Part 3" and think about how any of the activities described in these articles could be used for curriculum enrichment. The Additional Resources section below contains other activities for you to explore. Software Inventory Review Assignment Return to your software inventory form. Mark the software you could use in an Enrichment Center, and then add any notes to describe these activities. Refer to the Software Inventory Assessment Rubric for expectations in completing this form. Enrichment Web Sites for Students Find a Web site that could be used at an enrichment center. Try to find a simulation, drill and practice, game, or tutorial, and share this in the discussion forum. 1. Review the Web site and think about how you would have students use this resource. How could this Web site improve student learning and be used as an enrichment to the curriculum? 2. Go to the discussion forum titled "Student Enrichment Web Sites" and post a message. In the message subject heading write the name of the Web site. 3. In the message content area, include the URL and then write a brief summary of how you have used the Web site or how you envision using the site at a learning center. 4. Select a Web site posted by another learner, review the Web site, and add a comment. Refer to the discussion rubric to review the expectations for participating in online discussions in this course. Additional Activities and Resources (not required) Review the following resources for additional enrichment ideas:

Tessellation Exploration WalkThrough (pdf) To create a bat tessellation. To download a trial version of this software, visit Product Demos. Read the article "The Right Write Site" (pdf) by Nick Viani. There are many educational Web sites created by both educators and educational product developers that provide challenging activities for students. Here are just a few. Be sure to also review the sites posted by other learners in the discussion forum. Visit Abacus International Math Challenge for monthly math challenges for students in grades 3 through 8. More problems to solve can also be found at Math Forum's Problems of the Week In Decisions, Decisions Current Issues, students explore a current events topic and face challenging, real-world dilemmas. Visit this Web site to get a free trial subscription. Cultural Debates Online is a free Web resource. At this site, students learn about cultural issues through watching video, reading opinions, and writing personal and persuasive opinions of their own. The debate movies foster discussion and critical thinking about issues affecting cultures across the world through the case study of a single rainforest tribe in Indonesia. The use of the Internet provides a wide dialogue in which students can express and exchange ideas on the same topic.

Enrichment Center Look Ahead Create Your Enrichment Center Plan and Design a Lesson Assignment Think about your curriculum goals and the kind of lesson you would like to develop for your classroom enrichment center. Think about the following when designing your lesson: Plan and design a lesson in which students use the classroom computer as a research center. Think about the following when designing your lesson: What is the activity? What are the goals and objectives of the activity? How will the activity be structured? What opportunities for shared learning and collaboration does the activity provide? How is this activity related to your curriculum? What software and/or Web sites will you be using? What are the management issues? How many students will be working at the computer at one time? What additional materials and resources will need to be provided? What types of modifications will you need to make for the students in your classroom? Use the lesson plan template as a guide for creating your lesson plan. Then, go to the discussion forum to share your plan with other learners. Then, provide feedback for two learners on their lesson plan using the peer review guidelines. Try to provide feedback for individuals who have not yet received feedback from two other learners. Note: During Session 5, you may choose this activity to be the lesson implemented in your classroom. Make sure that you plan ahead so that you can implement a lesson during the next session. 6 Session 1 Session 2 Session 3 Session 4 Session 5 Session 6 SESSION 4: THE CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT CENTER Look Ahead You are now well on your way to completing your final project! During the next session, plan on implementing one of the types of learning center activities you developed. In Session 5, you will read about how to help students extend the learning while working on computer activities to other subject domains, and then apply this practice to your own lessons. 2004, PBS.
