East Dover Elementary NEWSLETTER November / December 2011 November / December Newsletter Excitement is in the air at East Dover Elementary. The holidays are here and our students are actively involved in collecting non-perishable food for those in need, rehearsing for holiday shows, in addition to working hard each and every day. Our PTO held their Family Holiday Shoppe on Friday, December 9 h. An unbelievable amount of people showed up and enjoyed shopping, eating and doing crafts. Thanks to our wonderful teacher and staff volunteers for doing crafts with the children and/or helping with the overall festivities. We all had fun at our first annual Jingle Bears Run/Walk held on Saturday morning, December 10 th. Thanks to Mrs. Pokorny for organizing this fun and healthy event and to her husband for being our safety expert and leader! Thanks to our teachers who volunteered their time to help out and/or participate. This tied into our T.E.N for Life initiative: Think Exercise Nutrition for Life. T.E.N. for Life is an initiative begun at East Dover to educate our students on the importance of eating nutritionally and exercising regularly. We would like to thank all of you for attending our annual Parent Teacher Conferences. We are thrilled to see such a great turnout! We received such nice compliments from so many of you and we truly appreciate it. Working together as a Team only benefits your child. Now that the winter months are upon us, please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for cold weather. Most days we go outside for recess and it is important that they come to school with a coat. School begins at 9:20 am; therefore, students should not be arriving to school before 9:10 AM. Schools are closed for the holidays from December 24 - January 3, Our East Dover family would like to wish you and your family a happy holiday and a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year. 12//26-1/2 WINTER RECESS 1/3 SCHOOL OPENS 1/16 SCHOOL CLOSED - Martin Luther King 1/19 Night under the Stars 1/26 Night under the Stars Week of 1/23- STARLAB
East Dover Fifth Grade students learned about the states of matter as they made a slimy substance with their teachers and East Dover Supervisor, Mrs. Spice. They made data tables, performed a chemical reaction and evaluated their products. Science can be fun and messy! East Dover Elementary School proudly honors our veterans this Veteran s Day by allowing our students, parents and staff to write the name of their important veteran on a gold star and place it on our tribute board. We appreciate all their dedication, sacrifice and service. We are also running our 16th Annual Veteran s Day Food Drive, with all donations going to VET- WORKS, an organization for all Ocean County veterans. Happy Veteran s Day! 1
I The East Dover Elementary School 5 th grade chorus entertained the students, staff and parents with their 5 th Grade Holiday Jam, under the direction of Mrs. Kelly Madensky. There was dancing, singing and one of the students was featured on the piano. It was a wonderful production! f school is delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather, the district s automated system will call each home with notification about school closing or having a delayed opening. If you have a call block on your phone you may not receive this call. The following television and radio stations will announce school closing or delayed openings: Comcast Cable Channel 21 ATTENTION PLEASE WOBM FM 92.7 or B98.5FM You will also find closing and delayed opening information on the district web page at **WHEN SCHOOL STARTS ON A DELAYED OPENING, AM KINDERGARTEN, AM PRE-SCHOOL HANDICAP, AND AM Y KIDS, ARE CANCELLED FOR THAT DAY.**

Our annual East Dover Elementary Halloween Parade was a real TREAT! Staff and students alike, took part in all the wonderful activities planned for the day. Thank you to all parents, families and the PTO for their contributions and enthusiasm!

The first annual Jingle Bell Run was a great success, thanks to all the participants and Mrs. Beth Pokorny, the coordinator of the event. All proceeds will benefit Toys for Tots.
The Holiday Family Social was a wonderful night for all! Parents, students and staff enjoyed an evening of crafting, treats and a visit to the Holiday Shop for some last minute shopping. Thanks to the PTO and all participants for making the night such a success!
Enjoy the holiday season and remember... always be kind to one another. PEACE
