LOG OF DELIVERY REACCREDITATION APPLICANTS Date (Please ensure these are in chronological order) Name of Applicant: Sub-Discipline: Psychology Domain of Expertise: Support Client(s)* No. Of Hours Support delivered to client* Reflection Points Year 1: (Sept 2006-Sept 2007) Archery GB 45 days (360 Includes: - Providing support to individual World Class funded Paralympic archers as required - Leading on creation of culture and world class environment with archers and staff - Staff development and support - Inputting into developing periodised performance programme in lead in to Beijing Provision of support at major events/championships (15 days) Role continued to develop (having taken it on in July 2005). Appointment of head coach, and stability of staff team by March 2007 made it possible to take a longer term planning approach, and contributed to my ability to positively impact on the structure and content of the performance programme. During this period, I also increased my technical knowledge of archery (which is a very technical sport hence having an appreciation of technique is critical in my role), and initiated a staff development programme, which was fully supported by the head coach (very necessary!). I also learnt more about multidisciplinary programme planning, and cyclical quadrennial planning processes. October February x Junior Fencers 23 hours Psychology support comprised basic mental skills training and competition preparation Some further development on skills and strategies of working with junior athletes (and with athlete-parent relationships) On-going work with 1 distance runner and 1 professional golfer 20 hours Individual psychology support on-going work with two long standing clients as required. Largely maintenance work with two clients who I ve worked effectively with for over 3 years. Research Engagement in various applied research projects that directly fed into practice skills and competence, including: -on-going work on PhD data collection (interviews) of 12 highly experienced practitioners - projects on professional development of practitioners My PhD research greatly contributed to my understanding of counselling theory (and humanistic philosophy), and of the outcome-process research in counselling psychology. Reading about practice made me more aware of what I was (and was not!) doing and of areas for development and provided some impetus into getting these development needs met. It also reinforced some core values and

Total 403 Archery GB 50 days (400 Research On-going work with 1 distance runner and 1 professional golfer Total 420 Year 2: (Sept 2007-Sept 2008) Included: - On-going support for individual archers - Feeding in to archer planning and reviewing processes - Providing support at major events (15 days) - Working closely with the broader coaching and sport science/medicine staff team to design and deliver a coherent Games preparation programme. - Contributing to sport science and medicine group for ArcheryGB. - Representing Archery GB at Paralympics GB Sports Science/Medicine conference Completion and submission of PhD thesis (full sabbatical from academic post January-June 2008) 20 hours Individual psychology support on-going work with two long standing clients as required. Year 3: (Sept 2008-Sept 2009) principles I hold as a practitioner. Having the opportunity to interview 12 very experienced senior practitioners also fed into my practice it confirmed some things I currently do and believe, and stimulated thought, interest and change in practice behaviour in other ways. Providing support in the build-up to a Paralympic Games was challenging and stimulating. I designed a 3 phase preparation programme (to dovetail with other elements of the overall technical/physical plan) in the build up to the Games, on the basis of (limited!) existing literature, and discussion with a number of experienced practitioners, athletes and coaches. The last 3 months were intense and challenging dealing with athletes who had not made selection (but were still on the programme), and a rising level of tension and perception of pressure amongst those going to the Games and competition between them in some instances. Facilitating a programme of staff development which we devoted a great deal of attention to, as we predicted that it would be critical to function effectively as a staff team, and provide each other with support to be effective individually was a core element to the support, and one that did indeed prove to be important during the Games. As above the ability to immerse myself in the research during the final stages of thesis completion contributed to my knowledge of counselling and sport psychology professional practice literature, and led to reflection on my practice. As above

Archery GB 48 days (384 Total 424 Included: - Support at Beijing 2008 Paralympics, and at Macau Holding Camp - Participation in review processes post Beijing - Programme planning for London Continued provision of individual support to archers - Team development/facilitation work - Staff development and support Supervision of year 1 SE student Year 4: (Sept 2009-Sept 2010) Providing support at the Paralympic Games (and at the Holding Camp in Macau beforehand) was possibly my biggest challenge and hence learning experience to date! I learnt that support in major competition involves being able to manage oneself in a high pressure environment; make quick decisions (and accept that they may be wrong!); be more supportive, reinforcing, and directive with athletes than normal, or in less intense/ smaller competitions; and have an ability to cope with stress, fatigue and your own emotions as an individual. Coming through nearly a month away from home, and having to manage some very challenging situations at the Games and knowing that I had contributed to a successful outcome for the team really positively impacted my belief in myself as a consultant; that I could handle most situations thrown at me, and that I had tangible experience and knowledge to offer other programmes and athletes. Working with my supervisee made me reflect on my own practice my knowledge, experience and journey. Having quite open conversations with him about the approach that we would take in our work (e.g. the degree of directiveness v experiential learning) also made me reflect on my work with athletes, and how I negotiate this balance with them/whether I get this right all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed the process, and the change in working in a supervisory role (which isn t too different from working with athletes in reality!) Archery GB 35 days (280 Psychology support to Paralympic squad. Involved: - Provision of individual support - Team and culture development work - Support at competition (13 days) Lead psychology role for Archery GB (from August 2010 onwards). Involved: My input into the programme during this period was reduced due to funding cut-backs (as was the case with all SSM staff) which presented an interesting challenge to me in terms of prioritising what was going to have the biggest impact (particularly systemically) to performance. I was also restricted to only working with top level funded archers which also presented some challenging ethical and professional dilemmas at times! - Initial audit of psychology support needs across the sport (primarily the Olympic Squad), with production of report and agreement of resourcing and staffing of support requirements. From June 2010, I was asked to conduct an audit and produce a blueprint for psychological support across the squad and with the Olympic squad in particular (who had had no psychology support since immediately post-beijing). From there, I was asked to lead up a unified psychology

- Co-ordinating, and leading the delivery of support to the Olympic Squad - Initiating process of recruiting additional consultants as required - Managing/supporting squad consultant for Development squad support programme, and co-ordinate, and deliver support to the Olympic squad. An increased input resulted in reducing my academic role to a 0.5 position. The opportunity to build a team of practitioners, and oversee the development of a coherent psychology support programme across the sport was exciting and challenging, and a logical next step in my development as a practitioner. December 2009-April 2010 Paralympics GB 11 days (88 Consultant to Paralympics GB role included: - Planning psychology support for build up to London in conjunction with another consultant, initiating an audit of psychology support across Paralympic sports, and identifying critical elements of a support programme both for consultants, coaching staff, and athletes. - Contributing to staff development programme This work resulted from links made with Paralympics GB in the build-up to Beijing 2008 and at the Games themselves. It provided me with great experience of working a) in a large multi-disciplinary team; b) in a multi-sport programme and c) with other experienced sport psychologists. I was asked to take the lead in some early work on the opportunities and challenges associated with a Home Games, and I presented a workshop to lead coaches and managers across Paralympic sports on that topic. - Provision of support on a 5 day multi-sport camp February September 2010 Paralympics GB 7 days (56 Consultant/researcher on Paralympics GB Talent Transition Project. Role included: - Leading initiation of support programme design of programme; delivery of sessions on initial training camp; development of core assessment materials. - Leading monitoring and research projects on psychological parameters associated with talent and success through the programme. A good opportunity to work with more development level athletes! It challenged me to be really consider how best to pitch concepts and skills which might be novel to these athletes but within a programme that was aiming to extend and fast track them to compete at The research involvement was also interesting managing the tensions between doing applied research for PGB (and fulfilling their needs), but at the same time doing research which could extend knowledge and feed into future practice was at times a difficult balance to achieve. Supervision of year 2 SE student As above. Again it was interesting to consider how my supervision style needed to change to support (and encourage) an increasing level of autonomy and confidence in my supervisee Total 464 Year 5: (Sept July 2011 ) Archery GB 86 days (688 Lead psychologist to Archery GB. Role included: - Delivering psychology support to selected Olympic and Paralympic archers - Co-ordinating psychology support/input from other This work involved a great deal of commitment in terms of time, energy and innovation! It has marked a great deal of challenge for me, but also growth. Working with the Olympic squad has been more complex (systemically and in terms of the individual issues I ve been working with) than my work

Work with a Clay pigeon shooter specialist practitioners to Olympic archers - Supporting two practitioners responsible for delivery to the Paralympic and Development squads (running a peer support group; individual support as required) - Creating a legacy - developing a psychology support programme with associated resources to be used across all three squads. - Leading on team and staff development with Olympic squad - Competition support at European Grand Prix and two World Cups (22 days in 2011 season to date) with the Paralympic squad. I ve worked closely with other practitioners both within and outside the sport as I ve sought to find solutions to issues I ve faced, and deliver a high quality support service, and lead in developing this across the sport. 23 hours Provision of support to elite clay pigeon shooter A nice opportunity to work in a sport I ve not previously worked in! Associate work with leadership and team development companies Total hours Has included a two day team development programme, a The Manager as Coach workshop, programme and material development, and some business development work. Supervision of year 3 SE student Interesting to work with other practitioners (with both sport and organisational backgrounds) and with a different client group. A key discovery for me was the transferability of concepts, skills and strategies that I work with athletes on into the corporate world. A critical difference is the need to be able to package and convince a corporate audiences (who might be more sceptical and challenging!). Working with others was great it gave me an opportunity to discuss respective philosophies, challenges of working with corporate clients, and to observe different approaches first hand. As above. My style during this period has changed again to become slightly more challenging as my supervisee has gained experience and confidence (and in ability), my role has been to support, but also extend him. I ve enjoyed the supervisory role and as with the previous two years, it s made me reflect on things that I m doing within my own practice. *For research applicants the client may be the research project. The support delivered will relate to the role played in the research project.
