1 The National Standard for School/College Work Experience 1. POLICY 1.1 The headteacher/principal and senior team and Governors are committed to the development of the school s work experience programme supported by a current work experience policy. 1.2 The headteacher/principal and senior team and Governors understand their duty of care and fulfil their legal requirements including health and safety and welfare. 1.3 The headteacher/principal and senior team make sure the school work experience team has an annual development plan with measurable performance objectives 1.4 The headteacher/principal and senior team can describe the roles of those involved in organising and coordinating work experience across the school, including identifying the lead responsibility. 1.5 The headteacher/principal and senior team can describe the training and development the school has invested in the work experience staff to enable them to undertake their roles effectively. 1.6 The headteacher/principal and senior team can identify the annual budget and resources available to the person responsible for work experience, the transparency of the budget and provide evidence of its effective use. 1.7 School/college staff are informed of work experience developments and can explain the aims and objectives of the programme. 1.8 Work experience staff can describe how they are involved in identifying their own work experience focussed learning and development needs and can describe the activities which have taken place to meet these needs. 1.9 Work experience staff can explain the strategies used to actively promote non typical gender stereotyping placements and equal opportunities within school/college work experience practice 1.10 Work experience staff can describe how they involve all partners (staff, parents, learners, business & community) in appropriate and timely communication Work experience staff can describe how local and national good practice and guidance is used in driving and developing work experience programmes.

2 2. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES 2.1 Managers and staff involved with the school/college work experience programme can describe their roles and responsibilities and explain the objectives of the work experience team at a level appropriate to their role. 2.2 A member of the teaching staff in the work experience team can describe how they manage the learning outcomes and curriculum support. 2.3 Senior managers and work experience staff can explain how the school holistically and pro actively involves business and community partners in promoting and organising work experience for the mutual benefit of all. 2.4 Work experience staff can explain how they obtain parents consent for the placement. 2.5 Work experience staff can describe the service-level or partnership agreements which exist and explain the outline roles and responsibilities, and minimum quality standards expected of partners 2.6 The school/college is able to show how it meets the HASPS requirements, including insurance, health and safety for employer visits/placements, in line with local and national guidelines. 2.7 Work experience staff can show how the school ensures all relevant information regarding special needs and/or medical conditions are effectively communicated to the employer.

PLANNING 3.1 Work experience staff can explain how the work experience programme is planned coherently to integrate with work-related learning, economic well being and other areas of the school/college curriculum and to take into account progression and prior experience issues. 3.2 Learners can confirm they have participated in the process of identifying the types of placement that will meet their learning needs, including any enterprise and employability capabilities and that individual learning plans exist for each learner. 3.3 Work experience staff can show how the school/college and employers work together to prepare for the placement to ensure the programme aims and learner learning outcomes can be met for every individual learner, including learners with special needs. 3.4 Work experience staff can show how learners receive and have access to information, advice and guidance about career opportunities in the context of preparation and placement choice. 3.5 Work experience staff can describe the systems in place to ensure parents are aware of the significant risks within the job description before the placement starts. 3.6 Work experience staff can explain how the school/college systematically collects management information and data and can provide examples of how this information has been used to inform current or future policy and practice. 3.7 The school/college can show how it effectively monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the placement database. 3.8 The school/college can show how it effectively monitors and evaluates the work experience programme. 3.9 Work experience staff can explain how the views of learners, monitoring staff, parents and placement providers are systematically collected and analysed and can provide examples of where feedback has impacted on change Work experience staff can describe the preparatory activities, covering a range of issues, including health and safety, which all students are involved in Learners can confirm they are encouraged to contact the workplace, in advance of their placement, to discuss the nature and range of work and learning outcomes Work experience staff can describe how learners are made aware of the need to, and method of, recording their learning and experiences and how their learning will be assessed Work experience staff can give examples of where work experience based projects and assignments are used by learners to complete course work for their work, including Diplomas and BTECS.

DELIVERY. 4.1 Work experience staff can demonstrate that all learners receive an appropriate workplace induction, before work starts. 4.2 Work experience staff can provide evidence of all learners on placement recording their experiences, learning and achievements in a diary, log book or by some other appropriate method. 4.3 Work experience staff can describe how they ensure all placements are visited, appropriate to the duration of the placement, by competent school staff or representatives. 4.4 Monitoring staff can describe the aims and purpose of the visits and are clear what to monitor and on what to provide feedback. 4.5 Work experience staff can describe how they encourage placement providers to undertake placement reviews with learners and complete feedback forms. 5. REVIEW 5.1 Senior managers can explain the college s/school s commitment to the continuous improvement of work experience and the evaluation and feedback strategies used to inform work experience improvement planning. 5.2 Work experience staff can give examples of how feedback on the placements from all partners has led to issues being identified and resolved and improvements implemented. 5.3 Work experience staff can provide evidence of a work experience annual report being produced and distributed to all partners which includes improvements to the practice and progress against the annual development plan. 5.4 Work experience staff can give examples of where evidence has been collected which shows changes, or otherwise, in learners' attitudes, aspirations and motivation, as a result of work experience. 5.5 Learners can confirm they are encouraged to provide placement feedback, to the school/college, on how well the work experience placement has been organised and run. 5.6 Work experience staff can describe how the work experience debriefing session/s relates to the learner learning objectives and identifies learning outcomes. 5.7 Learners are positive about their work experience and the learning outcomes achieved. 5.8 Learners can describe how their work experience learning relates to other areas of the school/college curriculum 5.9 The successes and achievements of learners on work experience are recognised and celebrated by the school/college.

SYSTEMS & PROCESSES 6.1 Work experience staff can explain how they ensure the safeguarding systems and procedures required are in place and where appropriate CRB and ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) checks are undertaken in line with national guidance. 6.2 Work experience staff can explain what systems and procedures are available on how to deal with unsatisfactory placements and accidents and incidents in the workplace. 6.3 Work experience staff can explain how they ensure that their contractual deliverer partner for work experience has, from a health and safety context, competent staff and safe systems and procedures involved in providing health and safety vetted placements.
