Snack time Snack is an important part of the day to 4K students. Snack time is done as a large group Please help your child to nourish their bodies with the vitamins and minerals that they need so please send 2 healthy snacks. They will need 2 healthy snacks every day Please provide a water bottle as well to use at snack time.

Lunch/ Recess Your child is given 20 minutes to eat lunch followed by a 25 minute recess. Before your child arrives at school please remind them of their lunch choice for the day (hot/cold). This is a busy time in the lunch room. Our lunch staff will encourage your child to eat their entire lunch to the best of their ability. Your child will go outside every day unless it s raining or it is below 10 degrees with the wind chill.

didn t receive them please see your child s teacher. Parent Volunteer Opportunities We encourage volunteers in the classroom, on field trips, and at all school events. Please communicate with your teacher if you would like to volunteer in the classroom. You will have to fill out a background check before you can volunteer or chaperone. They are good for three years after you complete one. These forms were already given to you but if you

Photographs 4K teachers will be taking photographs of your child to be used as a teaching tool and for projects we create. We typically take pictures of students participating in the classroom and post them on our 4K blog. If you didn t fill out the form please do so as soon as possible.

Mitchell PTA We encourage all families to join the PTA of Mitchell. PTA stands for Parent/Teacher association. This volunteer organization helps provide school wide events to promote community involvement, activities might include: dances, classroom field trip donations, special trips, etc. Monthly meetings are typically held at Mitchell on Thursdays. You will find that getting involved in your child s PTA will be beneficial to your family. Everyone is welcome to join.

Parent/Guardian and Teacher communication Daily: Daily written communication between home and school will be done using the Daily home folder. Please check it every day, empty the papers that are in it and return papers that need to be returned. Weekly: Almost every Friday a newsletter will be distributed. This newsletter will tell about the concepts and lessons we are learning, important dates, reminders, and school happenings. Conferences: October 8 th and March 22 nd. Anytime: Communication on a daily basis is always welcome. You may use any form of communication to get in touch with us.

Scholastic Book Club Scholastic book club offers a wonderful opportunity to build your child s library at home. They offer low priced affordable books and games. In addition when you place an order, the classroom also receives free books. Order forms will go home once a month.

Behavior System Our school wide PBIS behavior plan originated from the Seattle fish market and was adapted in schools nationwide. The FISH program helps students and teachers build effective relationships, establish individual accountability, and provide an emotionally and physically safe atmosphere of engagement and fun. It is based on four principles. Be there: This principle helps children develop a better understanding of and appropriate responses to, the needs and feelings of others. In the classroom, Be there teaches children to focus on educational lessons so they can become better students. Make their day: Doing simple things for others has many benefits. By doing little things to make others feel good, we can have a positive impact on the people in our lives. Choose your attitude: This concept helps students develop an awareness of the choices that they have about attitude and behavior. When children learn how to view their attitude as a conscious choice they can make every day, it can truly transform the way they choose to behave in all aspects of their lives. Play: The FISH philosophy encourages students to play with ideas and tap into their creative selves. A fun learning environment brings curiosity alive and children want to be there. Stinky Fish: The additional component that is a part of the philosophy is known as Stinky Fish. Teachers and students say stinky fish when someone is making an unsafe or unkind choice.

Behavior System continued We are working together as a school for improved behavior. This includes common courtesy. All classes will be using the card system. Each child has a set of cards that start out on Green. When there is an inappropriate behavior, the Green card is turned and it goes to the back of the pack. Now a yellow card is showing. We have 1 yellow card which is really strong reminder to correct their behavior. If behaviors do not improve, the final red card shows. At that point a Behavior Reminder is sent home to be signed and returned. Behavior charts are sent home every day in their home folders to notify you how your child did at school that day. Please initial this and return it to school the next day.
