david refuses to get even 1 Samuel 24 Saul learned that David had gone to the wilderness of En-gedi. So he chose 3,000 good soldiers and went after him. While Saul was in the wilderness, he stepped into a cave to go to the bathroom. He didn't know it was the same cave where David and his men were hiding! "Kill him now!" some of David's men whispered. But David would not kill a king God had chosen. Instead, David quietly came up behind Saul and cut off a piece of his robe. When Saul left the cave, David called, "My lord the king." Saul turned around and saw David. "Look!" David said. "Do you see this piece of your robe in my hands? I could easily have killed you in the cave. But I didn't." Saul began to cry. "You are a better person than I am," the king said. "You could have killed me, but you didn't. Now I know that you will be king someday. But promise me that when you become king, you will not harm my family." David promised. Then Saul went home with his soldiers. David and his men went back into the cave. DISCUSSION: How many soldiers did Saul take with him? David had an opportunity to get even with Saul. Did he? Anyone can try to get even. It takes a special person to not try and get even. Remember David the next time you want to get even. David let God show him what to do each day, and that made him special. 2 abigail stops a fight 1 samuel 25:1-42 David and his 600 men moved about from place to place. David could not go home because Saul still wanted to kill him. One time David and his men were camping near a rancher named Nabal. This man had 3000 sheep and 1000 goats. While Nabal was shearing his sheep, David sent some of his men to ask for food. But Nabal put down David and his men. "Why should I give my food to a gang from nowhere?" he asked. "Lots of people run away from their master. Who does this David think he is?" When David's men told him what Nabal said, David was angry. "Get your swords! Let's go fight Nabal and his men." As the men were going to fight, one of them went to see Abigail, Nabal's wife. He told Abigail how Nabal had put David down. So Abigail loaded some donkeys with food and went to see David. "Please don't hurt Nabal," she said. "You will be king someday. You don't want to do anything that's wrong now. Here is some food that I have brought." "Praise the Lord for sending you here today," David said. "Thank God for your good advice. I will not hurt Nabal." When Abigail came back home, Nabal was drunk. So Abigail waited until the next morning to tell him what she had done. After Abigail talked to Nabal, he became so angry that he had a stroke. In ten days he died. David was glad that he had not killed Nabal. "God has taken Nabal's life," he said. Then David sent a message to Abigail. He asked Abigail to marry him. So she went back with the messengers and became David's wife.

DISCUSSION: What kind of person was Nabal? What kind of person was Abigail? Why did David want to fight Nabal? What kept him from fighting? Who was a troublemaker? Who was a peacemaker? Troublemakers bring unhappiness. Peacemakers bring happiness. Which do you want to be? 4 david SNEAKS INTO SAUL'S CAMP AT NIGHT 1 samuel 26 King Saul was still trying to kill David. He kept promising not to hurt him. But the King kept on trying to do it anyway. One day some men told Saul where he could find David. So King Saul took his 3000 special soldiers and went after David. Saul set up camp near the place where David was hiding. David knew that Saul and his soldiers were there, so he sent some of his men out to watch what Saul was doing. One night David and a young man named Abishai sneaked into Saul's camp. There was Saul sleeping, with his spear and his water jug beside him. Abishai wanted to kill Saul. But David would not let him do it. Instead, David quietly took the king's spear and water jug. Then he left. The Lord had put Saul and his men into a deep sleep, so no one knew that David had been there. David and Abishai climbed to a hill overlooking Saul's camp. Then David called to Saul's general. "Wake up, Abner!" he shouted. Then David began to make fun of Abner. "Why didn't you guard your king?" David shouted. "Where are the king's spear and water jug? Look! Do you see that I have them?" Saul was awake now. So David talked with him. "Why do you keep chasing me and trying to kill me?" David shouted. "I have sinned," Saul confessed. "Come home. I won't try to hurt you anymore because you did not hurt me today." "Send a young man to come and get your spear," David said. "Now may the Lord let me live just as I let you live." "Bless you, my son David," Saul said. "You will do great things and win many battles." Saul went home again, but David stayed in the wilderness to hide. He did not trust Saul.

DISCUSSION: What did David take from Saul's camp? What did he say to Saul's general, Abner? What did David say to Saul? We trust people who are trustworthy. We stop trusting people who cannot be trusted. Saul could not be trusted. He kept on trying to kill David, even after he promised not to do it. Do your parents trust you? Do your friends trust you? How do you act to help them see that they can keep on trusting you? Some content taken from the One Year Bible for Children, New Living Translation, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. and V. 6 ` ` david leaves the philistines 1 samuel 29:1-30:31 For more than a year David and his followers had lived among the Philistines. David had moved there to get away from Saul. He was sure that Saul would kill him if he kept roaming through Israel. Now the Philistines were ready to attack Israel. David and his soldiers went with the Philistine army, marching at the end of the line along with the Philistine king. The Philistine commanders were not pleased. They thought David and his men might turn against them in the battle and fight for Israel. So they asked their king to send David and his men home. King Achish did not want to do this, but he told David that the commanders did not want him to stay. David and his men had been living in the village of Ziklag. When they went back to their homes, they found that some Amalekites had been there. These people were enemies of David's people, the Israelites, just as the Philistines were. David, his men, and their families had been safe with the Philistines. But the Amalekites burned the city of Ziklag and took all the wives and children. David and his men cried for a long time. Then they asked the Lord if they should go after the Amalekites. The Lord told them to go. Along the way 200 of the men became so tired they couldn't go on, but the other 400 kept on going with David. Before long they found a young Egyptian boy. His Amalekite master had left him behind because he was sick. The boy led David and his men to the Amalekite camp. They defeated the Amalekites and rescued their families, getting back all of the loot the Amalekites had taken. When everyone got back to the place where the 200 had stopped, the 400 soldiers who had done the fighting did not want to share the loot. But David made a new rule. All the soldiers were to share with each other. Even the 200 who had stayed behind to watch the tools and supplies would get their share. After David got back to Ziklag, he shared some more of the loot. He shared it with the leaders of several cities that he and his men had visited.

DISCUSSION: Who did David and his men start out to fight? Who stopped them? Why? What terrible thing happened while David and his men were with the Philistine army? Who did David ask for advice? How did David and his men find the Amalekites? What rule did David make about sharing? When David needed advice, he asked the Lord. The Lord has the best answers. When you have a problem, where do you go for advice? Start with God -- He has the best advice for you! 8 DAVID BECOMES KING OF ALL ISRAEL 1 SAMUEL 31:1-6; 2 SAMUEL 2:1-11; 5:1-12 When the Philistine army came to fight against the Israelites, King Saul and three of his sons died. Jonathan was one of these three sons. At first became king of just a part of Israel called Judah. One of Saul's sons became king over the other part. ruled over Judah for seven years. Then two men murdered the son of Saul who was king of the rest of Israel. After that the leaders of all the tribes of Israel came to. They asked to be king over all of Israel. made an agreement with the leaders, and they crowned him king. ruled both Judah and Israel for 33 years. led his soldiers against a group of people called the Jebusites. They had control of the city of Jerusalem. The Jebusites made fun of. "You'll never capture this great city," they said. But sent some soldiers up through the water tunnel. They opened the gates and let the rest of the soldiers in. Then 's army captured the city. gave Jerusalem a new name. He called it the City of. He built up the city so it became even greater than it had been. As time passed, himself became greater and more powerful than he had been before. That's because God was with him. A neighboring king sent cedar wood to help build a beautiful palace for. The Lord was kind to because loved and honored Him. Another reason why the Lord helped was that he wanted to help all the people of Israel. DISCUSSION: Was David king over all of Israel at first? How long was he king over Judah? How long was he king over both Judah and Israel? How did David get into Jerusalem to capture it? What did he name the city after the Israelites captured it? God helped David because David was faithful to Him. If you are ever tempted to turn away from God, remember how faithfully David followed Him. Do you want God on your side? 9 david brings the ark to jerusalem 1 samuel 6:1-19 David had become king over all of Israel. He had captured the great city of Jerusalem and made it the new capital of the land. The Lord was blessing David in many ways. But David wanted the Ark of the Covenant, also called the Ark of God, in Jerusalem. Since the days when the Philistines had captured it and then sent it back to Israel, the Ark had been in the home of a man named Abinadab. So David gathered 30,000 special soldiers to go after this special gold box with the Ten Commandments inside. They put the Ark on a new cart pulled by oxen. Abinadab's son Ahio went in front of the Ark with David. His other son, Uzzah, followed. When they came to a place where the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark. Uzzah died right on the spot. This happened because God's Ark, with His commandments inside, was very special. God had given directions about who could carry it and how it was to be carried. He wouldn't allow anyone to touch the Ark. Now David was afraid of the Lord. He decided not to take the Ark into Jerusalem. Instead, he took it to a home nearby. There it stayed for three months. But it became clear that God was blessing this home in special ways. So David decided to try once more. This time David and all the others worshiped the Lord as they took the Ark into the city. David gave offerings to the Lord and danced for joy. The people shouted for joy, and the trumpet players blew loudly on their trumpets. At last the Ark was safe inside the tent David had prepared for it. David again gave offerings to God. He also gave gifts of bread and cakes to all the people. It was a day of great joy. DISCUSSION: How was the Ark carried from Abinadab's home? What terrible thing happened to Uzzah? Why do you think he died? David learned the right way to carry the Ark. This time no one was hurt. There is a right way to do God's work -- the way He tells us. Read your Bible to find how you can best serve the Lord. Ask Him to help you know His way.

DAVID IS KIND TO MEPHIBOSHETH 2 SAMUEL 9 David had promised to be kind to Saul's family. He had made this promise to his best friend, Saul's son Jonathan. But now David wondered if anyone was left in the family. Who would know? David learned that one of King Saul's servants was still alive -- a man named Ziba. So David called for Ziba to come and see him. "Is there anyone from Saul's family still alive?" David asked Ziba. "I want to do whatever I can to show kindness to him." "Yes, Jonathan's lame son, Mephibosheth, is still alive," said Ziba. So David sent for Mephibosheth. He was lame in both feet. Of course Mephibosheth was afraid when he came to see David. He thought David would kill him. Then no one would be left in King Saul's family who would want to become king. "Don't be afraid," David told him. "I promised your father, Jonathan, that I would be kind to his family. I'm giving you all of your grandfather Saul's land. You will live here in the palace with me." Mephibosheth bowed down in front of David. Then David called for Ziba again. "I have given all of King Saul's land to Mephibosheth," he told Ziba. "You and your family will farm this land for him. He will live here in the palace with me." "I will do what you ask," Ziba told David. Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants. All of them would help him take care of Mephibosheth's land. Mephibosheth moved into the palace with King David. He ate at David's table and was treated as if he were David's own son. DISCUSSION: How was Mephibosheth related to King Saul? King Saul had tried to kill David many times -- why was David showing such kindness to Mephibosheth? We should be kind to others, even people who are not nice to us. We certainly should show kindness when we have promised to do it. Some content taken from the One Year Bible for Children, New Living Translation, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. and V.
