1 Fall 2015 ~ Beginners Lesson #3 Learning Objectives Moses and the Burning Bush Exodus 3:1 to 4:17 1. The children will be able to retell in their own words the story of Moses and his encounter with the burning bush. 2. The children will share how, when and why we communicate with God. Memory Verse: My help comes from the Lord. --Psalms 121:2 (NIRV) Getting Started Who is Speaking? Activity: You will need another adult, hidden, for this activity. Hide your adult volunteer in a place where the children will not see them, but will be able to hear them. Place a stuffed animal on the table as the children come into your class area. As the children come in, the hidden adult will speak, telling the children to sit down. Ask, Did you hear that? Who is talking? They may say the bear, and then have the hidden adult tell the students to stand back up. Oh my, did you hear that? Who is talking? At this point, show the students that it is not really the bear talking, but another hidden person. Today, we will be hearing about Moses when he was grown up, and how God talked to him in a pretty unusual way. But Moses listened and followed, just like you children did. OR Holy Ground Activity: When the children enter the classroom area, ask them to take off their shoes and place them outside the classroom. (Most likely, the children will resist doing this at first, but insist upon them taking their shoes off.) Then allow the children to enter the classroom and take their seats. Now that you have their attention (and curiosity), proceed with the today s lesson. Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Message: God is always with us. Exodus 3 ~ The Lord Sends Moses to Save His People Moses was taking care of the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, who was the priest of Midian. Moses led the flock to the western side of the desert. He came to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him from inside a burning bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire, but it didn't burn up. So Moses thought, "I'll go over and see this strange sight. Why doesn't the bush burn up?" 1

2 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - continued The Lord saw that Moses had gone over to look, so God spoke to him from inside the bush. He called out, "Moses! Moses!" "Here I am," Moses said. "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals. The place you are standing on is holy ground." He continued, "I am the God of your father. I am the God of Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. And I am the God of Jacob." When Moses heard that, he turned his face away. He was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, "I have seen my people suffer in Egypt. I have heard them cry out because of their slave drivers. I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to save them from the Egyptians. I will bring them up out of that land. I will bring them into a good land. It has a lot of room. It is a land that has plenty of milk and honey. And now Israel's cry for help has reached me. I have seen the way the Egyptians are treating them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh. I want you to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. They are my people." But Moses spoke to God. "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?" he said. "Who am I that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" God said, "I will be with you. I will give you a miraculous sign. It will prove that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship Me on this mountain." Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the people of Israel. Suppose I say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Suppose they ask me, 'What is His name?' Then what should I tell them?" God said to Moses, "I am who I am. Here is what you must say to the Israelites. Tell them, 'I am has sent me to you.'" God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord is the God of your fathers. He has sent me to you. He is the God of Abraham. He is the God of Isaac and He is the God of Jacob. My name will always be the Lord. Remember me by that name for all time to come. Go. Gather the elders of Israel together. Say to them, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers, appeared to me. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He said, I have watched over you. I have seen what the Egyptians have done to you. I have promised to bring you up out of Egypt where you are suffering. I will bring you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. It is a land that has plenty of milk and honey. "The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders must go to the king of Egypt. You must say to him, 'The Lord has met with us. He is the God of the Hebrews. Let us take a journey that lasts about three days. We want to go into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.' "But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you and your people go. Only a mighty hand could make him do that. So I will reach my hand out. I will strike the Egyptians with all kinds of miracles. After that, he will let you go. "I will cause the Egyptians to treat you in a kind way. Then when you leave, you will not go out with your hands empty. Every woman should ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles made out of silver and gold. Ask them for clothes too. Put them on your children. In that way, you will take the wealth of Egypt along with you." Exodus 4 ~ Miraculous Signs for Moses to Do Moses answered, "What if the elders of Israel won't believe me? What if they won't listen to me? Suppose they say, 'The Lord didn't appear to you.' Then what should I do?" The Lord said to him, "What do you have in your hand?" "A wooden staff," Moses said. The Lord told Moses to throw it on the ground, and so he did. It turned into a snake. He ran away from it. Then the Lord said to Moses, "Reach your hand out. Take the snake by the tail." So he reached out and grabbed hold of the snake. It turned back into a staff in his hand. The Lord said, "When they see this miraculous sign, they will believe that I appeared to you. I am the God of their fathers. I am the God of Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. And I am the God of Jacob." 2

3 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - continued Then the Lord said, "Put your hand inside your coat." So Moses put his hand inside his coat. When he took it out, it was as white as snow. It was covered with a skin disease. "Now put it back into your coat," the Lord said. So Moses put his hand back into his coat. When he took it out, the skin was healthy again. His hand was like the rest of his skin. Then the Lord said, "Suppose they do not believe you or pay attention to the first miracle. Then maybe they will believe the second one. But suppose they do not believe either miracle. Suppose they will not listen to you. Then get some water from the Nile River. Pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will turn to blood on the ground." Moses spoke to the Lord. He said, "Lord, I've never been a good speaker. And I haven't gotten any better since you spoke to me. I don't speak very well at all." The Lord said to him, "Who makes a man able to talk? Who makes him unable to hear or speak? Who makes him able to see? Who makes him blind? It is I, the Lord. Now go. I will help you speak. I will teach you what to say." But Moses said, "Lord, please send someone else to do it." Then the Lord's anger burned against Moses. He said, "What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you. He will be glad to see you. Speak to him. Put your words in his mouth. Tell him what to say. I will help both of you speak. I will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you. He will be like your mouth. And you will be like God to him. "But take this wooden staff in your hand. You will be able to do miraculous signs with it." Discussion Questions: 1. What did Moses do when he grew up? (He took care of sheep.) 2. What did Moses see that was unusual as he was taking care of his sheep? (There was a bush that was burning on fire and talking to Him!) 3. Who was really talking to Moses through the burning bush? (God.) 4. What did the voice tell him to do? (Take off his shoes; Go to Egypt and tell the King/Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.) 5. Why didn t Moses want to do what God asked right away? (He was afraid the people wouldn t believe him.) Do you think that was a good idea? Why or why not? (Discuss together.) 6. Why did Moses still not want to talk to the Pharaoh or the people? (He said he wasn t a good speaker.) 7. Who did God tell Moses to have speak for him? (Aaron, Moses brother. God would tell Moses, Moses would tell Aaron what God said, and Aaron would talk to the people.) 8. Did Moses finally listen to God? (Yes.) 9. Have you ever not wanted to listen when someone told you something? (Discuss together, answer will vary.) God wants us to listen to Him and follow His directions. God is always with us and He WILL help us! 10. God chose to help Moses. How can he help you during your day or week? (Make a list together.) 3

4 Application to Real Life While enjoying a snack together, write the word Communicate on your white board or easel. Talk with the children about this big word and what it means. Make a list of the different ways we can communicate with others (telephone, , etc.). Remind the children that in today s story God communicated with Moses in a very unique way through a bush that was on fire! God also expects us to communicate with Him. Ask the children: How do we do that? (Prayer). Remind the children that it is very important that we communicate with God every day and ask for His help and His protection in our lives. God is always with us, and our help can come from Him, but we need to remember to ask Him too. (Refer to the message and memory verse.) (Teacher note: to extend the discussion, talk with the children about where and when we can pray. Does it always have to be in our room by our bed with our hands folded and eyes closed? No! There are lots of times/ways to talk to God. The important thing is that we take the time to communicate with Him.) Memory Work Suggestions 5 minutes 1. Name the two main parts of the Bible and tell what the difference is. (Old Testament before Jesus, New Testament Jesus & After Jesus) 2. Where is the book of Psalms located? In the Old or New Testament? Practice finding it together. (Added challenge: find the memory verse together.) 3. Review the first commandment: I am the Lord your God. You shall have NO other gods before Me. 4. Recite the memory verse. Activity Ideas Hot Potato Game Have different items used in the story (a leaf, a sheep, a picture of fire, sandals, staff or walking stick, plastic or rubber snake). Pass around one of the objects and play the music. When the music stops, whoever is holding the item has to tell how it fits into today s lesson. Do this with each item or until all children have had a chance to explain an item. Leaf burning bush Sheep Moses was a shepherd Fire burning bush where God talked to Moses Sandals God told Moses to take off his shoes Staff or stick Moses used his staff as a shepherd, God showed him how to turn it into a snake Snake God turned the staff into a snake. 4

5 Activity Ideas Continued Burning Bush Craft Activity Do a craft of a burning bush picture. Find a picture of a bush in clipart or draw one using green crayons/pencils/markers. Then take pieces of cut tissue paper (orange/yellow/red), scrunch them up and glue them onto the bush for flames. The children can draw a picture of Moses standing next to the bush (remember his shoes were off). As the students make the craft, review the key concepts of the lesson. (REMEMBER: Write the memory verse on the paper for the children, and review where it comes from in the Bible, i.e. Old Testament. If time permits, then practice finding the verse in their Bibles. Pretend Play Activity Take turns dressing up and being Moses and God talking from the burning bush. Children can hide behind a chair or wall as they provide the voice for the burning bush. Homework Ideas - Read at home with a grown up the lesson titled: Pharaoh says No the Ten Plagues (Exodus 7 to 11; 12:3, 5-7, 11-13, 29-33). - Learn the memory verse for next week: Blessed is the one who always has respect for the Lord. --Proverbs 28:14 (NIRV) - Work on memorizing commandment #. - Color the Pharaoh says No the Ten Plagues handout (teachers print attached coloring page for each child).
