2 Job shadowing at Els Tres Turons Our Host: Judit Bellvehi, coordinator/ head of unit Background Els Tres Turons is a non-profit organisation of social initiatives, created in Primary mission of the foundation is to promote and support people with mental illness. The mission of the organisation is Prevention, the fight against social exclusion of people with mental illness Care intervention Rehabilitation Training and social integration Efforts related to society s conditions. Els Tres Turons is a procured Labour Market measure and the Catalan government finance rent, salaries and other costs. The main purpose for the unit The main purpose for the organisation is to promote actions and individual itineraries to social inclusiveness, develop programs and activities targeting psychosocial training and job placement, give support for the families, leisure and cultural activities. Another main purpose is to contribute to the awareness and dissemination of mental health problems and social exclusion in order to change social attitudes. Els Tres Turons offers pre-employment services consisting of: Community Rehabilitation Service /Day Centre: It is a service specialising in the field of rehabilitation and social integration. The main purpose is to give the necessary support to improve the quality of life, personal and social autonomy with individual programs Youth services: The service provides a functional plan of activities aimed at improving personal skills, social skills and personal relationships. Personalized, tailored program are offered for young people and their families. Job placement service: A structured pathway insertion with initial assessment, a training process, the support in the pursuit and maintain of the job in ordinary labour market or with support Social club: A social resource and a multipurpose meeting place, designed to promote socialization, facilitate social inclusion and the creative use of leisure. It consists different activities depending of the needs and profiles of the members; games, cultural and recreational outings, photography, football etc. Housing support: The service which offers professional support at home and around the person to promote and enhance his/her autonomy. The intensity of support varies depending on the needs of the person and can include support around daily living skills, community involvement etc. The unit has four flats which they can offer to homeless people. They also offer same support for people living in their own homes.

3 The target group Young people and adults, between years, with severe mental disorders. The most common diagnoses are schizophrenia, bipolar and personality disorders. Some persons have also had problem with alcohol or drugs in combination with mental illness (Co-Occurring Disorders). To participate in activities at Els Tres Turons the person has to fill some minimum conditions: The economic situation has to be stable and he/she must have some place to live. He/she also needs a medical certificate from the psychiatrist, regular treatment besides the activity and contact with the public net of mental health. Most of the participants have sickness benefit. Els Tres Turons has participants per year. They usually stay in 6 months, but some stay up to 2 years. Method for job placement service The most common way to participate in Els Tres Turons is through the mental healthcare. It is possible to be remitted through the social services under condition that the person has medical certificate, regular treatment and contact with a physician. The treatment must continue besides the activities at Els Tres Turons. The activity starts with two interviews. The purpose of the interviews is to investigate, learn to know each other, discuss the actual situation, create/upgrade the CV and finally create a personal plan. After interviews the person gets placement in a group of 10 participants. The group have 6-8 sessions during 2 4 weeks. They discuss and work with subjects as social abilities, self-knowledge and labour market issues. After group sessions the person is placed in some of the four workshops in the unit; gardening, cooking, electricity/construction/maintenance or subtitles. The subtitles workshop is aimed for enabling for deaf people, and this is the latest addition and started because some of the participants had a need for work where they did not have to work physically. The aim of participation is to check the basic abilities, for example if the person comes every day, comes in time, can keep on working etc. and if the he/she is able to work full or part time. The tasks and conditions in the workshops are like in real jobs. The gardening workshop is run in cooperation with florist school, which is situated in the same building. The cooking workshop prepares food for homeless people. The participant gets payment with 300 EUR per month for the work (sickness benefit). The final assessment is made on a base of both the clinical and the labour situation of the person. When the person is ready for work he/she has different alternatives to get work at companies in the ordinary labour market, with or without support

4 At social companies which are temporary jobs for up to 2 years. The goal is to get a job in the ordinary labour market. The social companies have maximum10 employees. The companies work with forest work, packing in the stores etc. Not limited State organized employment, medical certificate is demanded. The working hours adapted to individual conditions, follow up take place two times a year. Results 33 % gets work in the ordinary labour market, with or without support. 33 % gets work at social companies or state organized employment 33 % returns to healthcare or social services for more support and other assistance. Place they work in: The buildings are owned by The City Council. In front of the house there is a kitchen garden for retired people. The location of the house is on a hill and the views from here are strikingly beautiful with views of the city. It s an old stone house and the surroundings used to be a vineyard, but today you can find olive trees and vegetables surrounding the house. Resources, money, building, equipment, number of staff and competence of people who work there: Els Tres Turons has 9 employees: 1 manager 3 leaders for workshops 3 social educators 1 job matcher 1 psychologist Focus questions In your opinion, what are the most challenging issues, and why? What is/has been your biggest obstacles? Staff at Els Tres Turons says that the biggest challenge in working with individuals who have a mental disability is the fears and prejudices that society often has. The prejudice against people with mental problems often results in difficulties when they want to enter the labour market. Els Tres Turons have noticed the difficulties when they work towards the labour market and employees, trying to find suitable jobs for their participants. How do you work to increase the motivation of these groups? How do you most effectively use the diversity among applicants? It seems that Els Tres Turons organisation has found a method of motivating individuals in the best way. They first start up by doing a survey after that they draw up a personal plan with the individual that is based on what the person is willing and able to do. From there they place

5 individuals in one of the four workshops that is rather similar to real workplaces. If the individual don t feel comfortable with the planned workshop they get a chance to try another one. This method seems to be an effective way to use the different participant s previous interest and former work experiences. In the workshop works, skilled staff that are there to support the participants when performing real work that benefits someone else. For example cooking for the homeless people is a way to give back to society. Hopefully the job training period results in that the participant is active, contributes to increasing sense of inclusion, doing good, raise self-esteem which in the long term leads to higher motivation for individuals who for various reasons have been far from the labour market. In summary the whole process seems to be a win-win mission. The participants get the advantage of getting job training through the activities that the organisation gives and at the same time the homeless benefits. Reflection and analysis of the visit and the learning: What was most interesting and why was it interesting? The most interesting thing was that they did a test after the workshops and the work training session, those who did well could go further to the job market and work for a company. Those who did not pass the test had a chance to repeat the workshop and trainee to focus on their weak area or may be made another schedule to try different workshop. They have also established contact with some companies which hired the participants after they have completed the process and passed their test. What were the biggest differences and similarities? The differences were that, the participants did not have same diagnoses, whereby some others had double diagnoses. Their similarities were that, all the participants had been excluded in the society or they felt that they could not challenge those who were not disabled or mentally disordered. It seems Stockholm city and Barcelona city are challenging the same obstacles when it comes to integrating mentally disabled individuals into the labour market. What was learned from the visit/what will you take home? There are many challenges in the labour market which does not favour the disabled ones. We have learned from the visit that social inclusion for all, including disabled is very important in societies and also that we have to take responsibility taking into consideration those who are outside and cannot enter into the labour market. Another one is that they had this law which says if a company has a total of fifty workers, they should at least hire 2-5 disabled individuals. And this is something we could implement in the Swedish labour market to increase the possibility for the disabled. What do you want to share with colleagues in Stockholm? Barcelona s method of working with social exclusion is something that we want to share with our colleagues in Stockholm. We want to highlight the advantages of NGOs and how it could be implemented in Stockholm to work with integration and social exclusion.
