SymbioCity Launched by Sweden in 2008 to highlight the practical appoaches being applied by communities across the country to achieve sustainable cities. The focus is on integrating different technologies with city functions. ( Environmental and Sustainability Policy A briefing by the Ministry of the Environment, Division for Sustainable Development on key policies and legislation for Sweden and relevance to Canada. Swedish Governance. An overview by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, Growth and Community Development Division ( about the relationship and the responsibilities of the various levels of Swedish government :00 Departure to Hammarby Sjöstad Traditional Swedish lunch at Jimmy s Marina (a truly integrated restaurant!) in Hammarby Sjöstad, hosted by ENVAC (leading Swedish supplier of waste movement vacuum systems for urban environments ( Hammarby Sjöstad - Swedish Sustainability Culture in Practice ( An afternoon visit of an internationally award-winning redeveloped brownfield site. Hammarby Sjöstad is considered to be among the most sustainable urban developments in the world with more than 10,000 apartments in central Stockholm. The guided tour will include: The Hammarby model comprehensive sustainable full life-cycle planning (live, work, play and live in place). Integration of fuels waste water treatment and biogas through district energy. Presentation by ENVAC of their underground vacuum waste collection systems. Guided tour in the development and visit to one of the apartments to experience the sustainable living life-style of a Swedish family. Canadian Embassy Reception An evening of interaction with some of Swedish leading companies, researchers and government organizations. The evening will be hosted by the Canadian Ambassador. Evening of leisure in Stockholm A guide of the narrow streets of the Old Town and the majestic Royal Palace will be available.

Sept :00 20:30 22:30 Stockholm - Linköping The Swedish Utility Sector Experience with Integrated Energy Communities The Swedish Energy Agency with Sweden s leading utility companies will provide a half-day workshop on the energy markets in Sweden and the role of integrated energy systems. Participants will be able to meet with senior executive counterparts and discuss business models applied (financing structures and regulated approach where applicable). A review will be conducted of the division of responsibilities between the utility companies and the municipalities when they undertake energy infrastructure development. Energy systems in operation for smaller and larger communities will be examined. Stockholm s City Hall is the famous Restaurant Stadhuskällaren. The Blue Hall of the City Hall is noted for its annual world famous Nobel Banquet. Stockholm Royal Seaport ( The royal Seaport is a Clinton foundation project and the largest urban redevelopment of its kind in Europe, the Stockholm Royal Seaport brings together intelligent energy and transportation infrastructure and design. You will have the opportunity to meet the experts behind the vision and learn how the political will was obtained, the business case constructed and the sustainable business model implemented. Sept Stockholm - Kisa - Kosta Departure from hotel, luggage on the bus Arrival Tekniska Verken AB (TVAB) ( TVAB has approximately 300,000 private and corporate clients and provides a variety of products and services that address an integrated approach electricity, water, district heating, district cooling, waste management, broadband, biogas and other services for customers. A presentation of Linkoping s District Energy System, including a tour of the energy from waste plant. TVAB is also a major producer of biogas which is used by all buses on the City s public transit system, as well as most taxis and municipal fleet of vehicles. at Tekniska Verken Departure for Kisa Tour of TVAB s System Plant TVAB is using a wide range of fuels in their district energy systems. This tour will feature a biomass fired district energy plant, using wood waste from a local sawmill. Departure for Kosta, The Kingdom of Crystal, world famous for its glass manufacturers such as Kosta Boda and Orrefors. Arrival Kosta at the Famous Kosta Boda Art Hotel - A Time to Unwind Hotel: Kosta Boda Art Hotel ( is a hotel exploding in colours, shapes and flavours. Every room has been designed by one of Kosta Boda s 7 glass designers. Dinner at the hotel s Linnéa Art Restaurant, designed by Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. An experience for both the eye and the palate. The hotel s glass bar (Glasbaren) features chairs made out of blue glass and is well worth a visit after dinner. The evening will provide an opportunity to share initial learning s, requests for additional information and provide a time to get to know tour participants and co-hosts.

Sept Kosta Växjö- Malmö Kosta Boda Glassworks ( An optional tour where you will see first-hand how they blow the world famous glass followed by a visit to the Kosta Outlet store, a m2 store filled with glass, as well as clothing, jewellery, books and shoes. Departure for Växjö Växjö is a city of 80, 000 inhabitants and The Greenest City in Europe. The City is activity involved with ENGAGE an initiative to advance efficiency and integrated energy decision making ( that is led by Energy Cities which is the European Association of local authorities inventing their energy future ( The city of Växjo adopted a fossil fuel free policy already by the mid-1990's, called Fossil Free Växjö and has one of the lowest per capita emissions rates. Since 1993 Växjo has reduced the fossil CO2--emissions by approx. 35 %, parallel with a steady regional GDPgrowth of 69 percent. The region is characterized by the entrepreneurial spirit and its many small and mediumsized companies, as well as some large ones. For instance, Växjö is the centre of the region where IKEA was born. The city of Växjö is surrounded by dense forestry, similar to the northern part of Ontario or Québec. Tour of Sandviksverket, Växjö Energi AB s major co-generation plant ( In 2011, the fuel mix for VEAB was biomass (wood) 90%, peat 6% and oil 4%. The wood fuel is produced in the region within a radius of km from the City of Växjö. Building Community Competitiveness through Integrated Energy ( Växjö is located in the middle of Scandinavia s leading entrepreneurial region. The region has traditionally experienced a lower unemployment rate than the national average, but has focused on innovation to stimulate job creation, including alternative fuels and technology. 5 Fri. Sept Departure for SYSAV (Southern Scania Waste Management Company) ( SYSAV is owned by the City of Malmö and thirteen neighbouring municipalities. Like all Swedish cities, less than 5% of the waste collected ends up in a landfill. The other 95% of the waste is being recycled or reused. Materials that cannot be easily reclaimed are recognized for their imbedded energy potential. SYSAV plays an important role in supplying the city with electricity and thermal energy. The tour will focus on the Swedish waste management philosophy at the municipal level in terms of land valuation, and opportunities for harnessing of alternative fuels. Recycling efforts to minimize waste and how it is managed in society, how they recover electronic waste will also be presented. The focus of the session will be insights into the role of district or community energy in Malmö and a brief guided tour of the SYSAV s Energy from Waste Plant and landfill site. Departure for Augustenborg Ecocity Organic lunch at Augustenborg Guided walking tour through Augustenborg, an area built in the fifties that was redeveloped to meet new and higher sustainable standards, including green roofs. Departure for Hotel and Leisure Time Participants have the opportunity to enjoy the afternoon in Malmo. Farewell Dinner Dinner hosted at Salt & Brygga, an ecological restaurant ( Participants will have a chance to engage with Swedish hosts and discuss services and needs for Building Smart Energy Communities in Canada.
