1 University Physics I (PHY2048) Syllabus Message from Instructor: Welcome to University Physics I. I hope you had a restful break and are looking forward to the start of a new semester. Please be sure to read the syllabus and become familiar with it. On the last page you will find a syllabus quiz to verify that you have read the syllabus. This will be your digital signature affirming that you have read it. Please answer the questions, scan it, and submit it in the Dropbox in elearning. elearning will be where you will find all course files. Materials: Please be sure to have your textbook and your personal response clicker the first day of class. You will also need a ruler, protractor, and compass for this course. We will begin our lecture the first day of class. If you wait to purchase the course materials, you will put yourself at a disadvantage. With this in mind, please review Chapter 1 in preparation for our first day. The laws of physics are relatively few in number, but the myriad of different circumstances in which they may be applied shows that strict memorization is not the best procedure for learning the subject matter. Rather, applying the concepts of physics to numerous problems leads to a much better understanding of physics. Therefore, the student is advised to apply the concepts to as many problems as possible in order to gain a deeper insight into the subject. Students are also encouraged to work in groups. This technique usually leads to more material being covered with greater overall understanding. Lastly, please review your algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. We will utilize these regularly in class. Any review of these topics in class will be brief and is meant to refresh your memory, not to teach them to you. Physics for Scientists and Engineers: Student Solutions Manual, Ch Student Workbook (Comes with the textbook, optional) The tutoring center is located on the 3 rd floor of Building 4 (Room 321). This center is staffed by senior physics majors and is open during normal business hours on Monday - Friday. Students are strongly encouraged to regularly use the tutoring center. University Physics I is the first of a two-semester sequence of physics topics chosen as an introduction to this science. This is a calculus-based physics course. The principal subject of this course is mechanics, the science of motion. The topics covered will be the kinematics and dynamics of particles and rigid bodies, conservation laws and principles, gravity, and oscillations. Mechanics is the basis for much of engineering and applied science, and many of the ideas introduced here will be needed later to understand things like the motion of waves, the motion of electrons through circuits, or the contemporary concepts of science including modern physics. We will cover, at a minimum, chapters 1-14 of the textbook, and select topics will be covered by demand e.g. fluids and elasticity. Remember that this is a problem-oriented course. University Physics I is designated as a General Studies course. The General Studies curriculum at the University of West Florida is designed to provide a cohesive program of study that promotes the development of a broadly educated person and provides the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in university studies. This course has been approved as meeting the requirement in Natural Sciences. The General Studies learning outcomes for this course are Problem Solving and Quantitative Reasoning.

3 Personal Response System Reading Quizzes Post-Chapter Quizzes Exams Grading Breakdown This class utilizes personal response systems (clickers) in order to actively assess the student learning in the classroom. During the lectures multiplechoice questions will be presented. You will answer these questions using the clicker. A grade will be given based on participation only. If you are not in class to answer these questions, you cannot make them up. You must register your clicker through MyUWF in order to receive credit. Composed of conceptual questions on the up and coming chapter. This will be posted on the MasteringPhysics webpage 24 hours before class and must be answered by 3 a.m. the day of the class. The students responses will be used to help customize class lectures. will be assigned on the MasteringPhysics webpage and will include tutorials, coaching activities, conceptual questions, and end-ofchapter problems. Only a few of these will be worked out in class. It is important that you work out homework problems as the exam problems will be very similar to these. You can submit as many problems as you are able to do in the time given to you. For your homework to be complete, you must: (1) submit your answers on the Mastering Physics website before the deadline, and (2) turn in your work (see below for criteria) for all of the end-of-chapter problems. Submission of homework must be before the set deadline found on the MasteringPhysics webpage and your turned in work will be due on the same day. No excuses will be accepted. Two end-of-chapter problems will be randomly selected and graded in the same style as the exams. At the end of every chapter the students will have to answer a few questions on the MasteringPhysics webpage. These are only available for a few days and once the window has closed, you cannot make them up. There will be 2 tests and 1 final exam. The tests and final will be in class, closed note and closed book. It is a good idea to use and create a handwritten notebook during the lecture classes and summarize all the important concepts from the textbook. (Note: on all tests, a correct answer without work is worth 1 point out of 4 possible points. How you get there is the most important part and is worth the most points.) The course is divided up into the following parts: : 20%! MasteringPhysics: 10%! Shown work: 10% Quizzes: 20%! 2 Physics Knowledge Surveys: 1% each! Reading Quizzes: 5%! Clicker/Class Participation: 3%! Post-Chapter Quizzes: 10% Exams: 60%! 2 Midterm Exams: 15% each! Final: 30%

4 Grading Criteria Please write legibly and clearly mark each problem. Show all of your work for each Concept and Problem. To receive credit you must show: 1. A picture, properly labeled (put some thought and effort into this) 2. List of known quantities and what you re trying to find. 3. Free-body diagrams. 4. Break up vectors into their x- and y-components. 5. Determine appropriate equations. 6. Plug in 0 values to simplify equations. 7. Insert # s. Points Criteria Indicators 0 No relevant work Student gives an incorrect answer with no relevant work. Any work shown does not pertain to the problem Minimal effort Started problem correctly Partially correct answer but still incomplete Correct or nearly correct answer 5 Exceptional Student gives a correct answer with no relevant work or a student gives minimal correct work. Student may reveal misconceptions about concepts. Student lists the known quantities and what quantities are being found with a properly labeled picture. Student shows some prior knowledge but is not able to provide an answer. Student shows some prior knowledge and may use equations to answer the question but does not provide complete explanation for answer. Student does not use appropriate information to answer the question. Student answers the question with few or no mistakes and provides sufficient work to explain answer; however, some steps are skipped and work is unorganized. Student answers the question with no mistakes and provides a complete explanation. No steps are skipped, pictures are properly labeled, work is clear. 5 Help Student Conduct Withdrawals Everything in Writing 1. Instructor office hours (see above), and also available by appointment/ /stopping by anytime. 2. Tutoring is available in the Physics Tutor Center in Building 4, Room 321. (0.999% rounding bonus if significantly used) Make sure to login!!! This is the only record of you using the tutoring center. Make sure to check in and check out. If you do not, you will not receive credit for that days visit. See Physics office for schedule. 3. The Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) at the University of West Florida supports an inclusive learning environment for all students. (Links to the Student Life Handbook and the UWF Academic Conduct Statement are posted on the UWF Web Site at: UWF policy requires that students submit to the Office of Records and Registration a completed withdraw from courses, which is a different policy from that used by some other institutions, notably PJC. Withdrawals from this course that are processed by <<##/##/20##>> will result in a W grade being recorded. Withdrawals after this date can be done only by withdrawing from the University; the grade assigned will be W or WF. No withdrawals can be made after the close of classes. In an effort to prevent any confusion about deviations that may occur on an individual basis, everything must be in writing. This must include an e- mail from the student and a confirmation from the instructor. Verbal arrangements are not binding and will not be accepted as valid evidence toward any grievances the student may bring forward any time during or at the end of the term.

Assessment Method 1 Concepts of Motion qualitatively describe motion. 2 Kinematics in One Dimension quantitatively describe objects undergoing linear motion 3 Vectors and Coordinate Systems draw and apply arithmetic to vectors and utilize different coordinate systems. 4 Kinematics in Two Dimensions quantitatively describe the motion of objects in a plane 5 Force and Motion identify and understand what forces are, draw freebody diagrams and use Newton s 1st and 2nd Law to qualitatively describe motion. 6 Dynamics I: Motion along a Line identify and understand what forces are, draw freebody diagrams and use Newton s 1st and 2nd Law to quantitatively describe motion. 7 Newton s Third Law use Newton s 3rd Law to quantitatively describe how objects interact. 8 Dynamics II: Motion in a Plane apply Newton s Laws to objects in a 2D plane and 10 & 11 Work and Energy quantitatively describe Energy, its forms, and its relation to the concept of force. 9 Impulse and Momentum describe the relationship between momentum and force and how they relate to collisions 12 Rotation of a Rigid Body apply the concepts kinematics, Newton s Laws, momentum, and energy to rotating objects. 14 Oscillations use physics concepts to quantitatively describe systems that oscillate. 13 Newton s Theory of Gravity (Dispersed throughout) generalize the concept of gravity on earth to interacting bodies in space.
