Microfilm 276 rolls FHL # Locality Alabama On 19 February 1867 Alabama provided for Confederate veteran pensions. Initially it provided funds for soldiers or sailors who had lost their arms or legs in battle. Eligibility was later broadened. Applicants had to prove desertion-free military duty in Confederate service. Home guard or state reserve service did not qualify an applicant; likewise, militia service in another Confederate state was not considered acceptable service. Coverage to widows was extended in Veterans and widows could not have real and personal property valued at more than $2,000. Residents of the state soldiers home at Mountain Creek were ineligible. Widows had to have married the veteran before If a widow had married before the end of the war, she was entitled to a full pension. Those who married after April 1865 were entitled to only a onethird pension. The files are arranged in alphabetical order. The veteran s application contains military and genealogical data and typically includes affidavits from others attesting to his service. A widow s application normally includes similar information as well as her husband s date and place of death and the date and place of their marriage. Applications for Relief by Maimed Confederate Soldiers. The series is not complete. Some of the files will be found in the series of Alabama Confederate Pension Applications, which the Library has.
