3 P a g e 3 EQUALITY POLICY Background The Equality Act 2010 replaced all existing equality legislation such as the Race Relations Act, Disability Discrimination Act and Sex Discrimination Act. It has consolidated this legislation to provide a single source of discrimination law. Purpose This Policy is required to ensure that The Chase School complies with equality legislation and in particular the Equality Act We welcome our duties under the Equality Act The general duties are to: Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation Advance equality of opportunity Foster good relations We understand the principles of the Act and the work needed to ensure that those with protected characteristics are not discriminated against and are given equality of opportunity. Under the Act we recognise the following protected characteristics: age disability ethnicity and race sex (including issues of transgender) gender identity and reassignment maternity and pregnancy religion and belief sexual orientation Aims of the Policy 1. To eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under this Act 2. To advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it 3. To foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it As part of our duties to eliminate discrimination, we recognise the need to publish a range of policies where the importance of avoiding discrimination and other prohibited conduct is expressly noted. We recognise the need to advance equality of opportunity by removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people due to their protected characteristics. Clearly our duty to foster good relations requires us to tackle prejudice and promote understanding. This is central to the school s purpose and has implications for the curriculum and all aspects of our work. Duties under Equalities Act To collect, analyse and publish information about the school s progress in achieving the three aims of equality legislation (this will be reported to the Governing Body annually in the Spring Term and published in the Governing Body minutes. Also see Appendix A of this Policy.)

To agree on certain specific and measurable objectives that the school will pursue over the coming years to achieve the three aims, and publish these objectives (see Page 2 of this Policy). 3. To engage with people who have a legitimate interest, including all staff, all parents, carers, students, local groups, organisations and individuals as appropriate. (This will be met through our normal consultation process). To fulfil these duties, we will collect data related to the protected characteristics above and analyse this data to determine our focus for our equality objectives. The data will be assessed across our core provisions as a school. This will include the following functions: admissions attendance attainment and progress exclusions prejudice related incidents participation Our objectives will detail how we will ensure equality is applied to the functions listed above. However, where we find evidence that other functions have a significant impact on any particular group, we will include work in this area. In fulfilling our legal obligations we will: recognise and respect diversity foster positive attitudes and relationships, and a shared sense of belonging tackle prejudice and promote understanding between people from different groups observe good equalities practice, including staff recruitment, retention and development, and procurement aim to reduce and remove existing inequalities and barriers strive to ensure that the communities within, around and beyond our school will benefit use the school s published complaints procedure to deal with any complaints Responsibility We believe that promoting equality is the whole school s responsibility. The Headteacher will ensure that a school culture and ethos is established, maintained and developed which: celebrates diversity/equality and achievement promotes high expectations, positive attitudes towards disabled people and those of different ethnic groups/religions listens to and involves students, parents, carers and staff communicates behaviour expectations ensures that it welcomes applications for school places and jobs from all sections of the community ensures that prejudice related incidents are reported, analysed, addressed swiftly and effectively, according to the school s procedures The staff will be expected to support this policy actively and the school s implementation of its equalities targets.

5 P a g e 5 Parents and carers will be consulted on the policy regularly and be kept informed of our equality objectives through the school website. Parents and carers will also take an active part in identifying barriers for the school community and will inform the governing body of actions that can be taken to eradicate these and achieve equality of opportunity for all. Students will be expected to support the school to achieve the commitment made to tackling inequality and uphold the commitment made by the Headteacher on how students and parents/carers, staff and the wider school community can be expected to be treated. Visitors and contractors will be made aware of the policy through relevant signs around the school and clauses in contracts. The Governing Body will: Set equality objectives collect, analyse and publish information about their progress in achieving the three aims of equality legislation consult with relevant parties regarding equalities issues designate a lead governor for equality issues encourage parents and staff from all ethnic groups when recruiting to the Governing Body apply the principles of best value without discrimination when purchasing goods and services The Governing Body expects all members of the school community to be committed to this policy, and that visitors will comply with it. It accepts responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented in every aspect of school life. If there is a breach of the policy, the school will take appropriate action. Arrangements for monitoring and evaluation The Governing Body will monitor the pattern and frequency of equality related incidents. It will receive reports from the Headteacher and staff that enable evaluation of the relevance of provision for dealing with equality related incidents defined as any incident which is perceived by the victim or any other person to contravene this policy. Addressing Prejudice Related Incidents This school is opposed to all forms of prejudice against students and staff and we recognise that young people who experience any form of prejudice related discrimination may fare less well in the education system. We provide both our students and staff with an awareness of the impact of prejudice in order to reduce the likelihood of any incidents. If incidents occur we will address them immediately and report them according to the procedures detailed in the school s Diversity Policy. Monitor and Review We will review our objectives in relation to any changes in our school profile and at least every four years. Our objectives will sit in our overall school improvement plan and therefore will be reviewed as part of this process.
