Summary of duties We are seeking to appoint a versatile postdoctoral research engineer to lead the innovation, development, implementation and validation of deformation, strain and residual stress measurement methods for materials engineering and structural integrity applications. A particular focus of the post is to help build innovative research capability that will underpin Faculty plans to establish an International Stress Engineering Centre (I-SEC) on the Harwell Campus near Oxford. Main Duties The main duties will be: To undertake fundamental research extending application of the contour method, including the use of non-planar cuts. To carry out residual stress measurements using diverse techniques (diffraction and strain relief) on complex components to support the Department s measurement services unit StressMap. To develop and apply digital image correlation technology to engineering applications working with members of the Materials Engineering research group. To write reports covering work completed and working with external clients as required. To prepare conference and journal articles documenting research achievements. To work closely with members of the Materials Engineering group and StressMap business unit. All staff are expected to: Co-operate with the Open University in ensuring as far as is necessary, that Statutory Requirements, Codes of Practice, Policies and Departmental Health and Safety arrangements are complied with; Have a strong commitment to the principles and practice of equality and diversity; Attend appropriate staff development events. 3. Person specification Requirements (E = Essential/ D = Desirable) Education, qualifications and training A PhD in a relevant discipline Knowledge, work and other relevant experience Essential: Experience of delivering high-quality materials engineering research outputs. Knowledge of solid mechanics and structural integrity. Knowledge and experience of applying destructive and non-destructive residual stress measurement methods. Knowledge and experience of applying digital image correlation (DIC), including data analysis and results interpretation. High level computer skills including writing software for analysing full field data and familiarity with packages such as MATLAB and ABAQUS. Ability to write concisely in English, including preparation of technical specifications, technical reports, journal papers and funding proposals. We support qualifications including the IMechE, IET, IED and CIBSE accredited BEng/MEng, the IED accredited BA/BSc in Design and Innovation, the BSc in Environmental Management and Technology, the MSc in Engineering, the MSc in Technology Management, the MSc in Systems Thinking in Practice, and the IEMA accredited MSc in Environmental Management. The School is one of the most research-intensive in the University, hosting two submissions in REF2014 from Materials Engineering and Design.
