Phase 1: Developing speaking and listening skills Sit very still and listen. What can you hear? Go for a walk in different environments and listen to the sounds around you. Talk about the sounds that things make and ask your child to recreate them e.g. plane, fire, mud.

Phase 2: This marks the beginning of systematic high quality phonics work and the introduction to grapheme-phoneme correspondence. Phonics is the relationship between a letter or group of letters, known as the and the sound they make, known as the

Phase 2: Matching phonemes to the written graphemes Enunciation using pure sounds not voiced sounds.

Phase 2: Learning phonemes to read and write simple words Children will learn their first 19 phonemes: Set 1: s a t p Set 2: i n m d Set 3: g o c k Set 4: ck(as in duck) e u r Set 5: h b l f ff(as in puff) ll(as in hill) ss(as in hiss) They will use these phonemes to read and spell simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words: sat, tap, dig, duck, rug, puff, hill, hiss All these words contain 3 phonemes.

Phase 3: Sounds represented by more than one letter Consonant Digraphs th Vowel digraphs Trigraphs air
