2 In this presentation I will Review the recent Government changes to assessment modes at Key Stage 4 and what this means for your daughter. Go through the different types of pathways that are available to your daughters in Year 10 and 11. Explore what each pathway offers in terms of securing best grades in core subjects. I won t...

3 Maths English Science Language ICT History Geography R.E. Technology PE Art Dance Year 7,8,9 Every year the challenge for students is the move from this common curriculum for all to an individual pathway of courses for themselves. Drama Music PSE

4 Key Stage 4 courses - GCSE/BTEC and developments that will effect your daughter s year group. GCSEs no longer modular all linear (exams at end of year 11) syllabuses for all subjects take care using older siblings books / buying old revision guides etc! Emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar skills increased in all extended writing questions in exams gain additional marks for this. Maths exams include questions with additional marks for application of numeracy real life applications of mathematics Grades for GCSE range from A*-G (but A* may change)

5 Key Stage 4 courses - GCSE/BTEC and developments that will effect your daughter s year group. BTEC Courses The BTEC Certificates taught at Ricards count as one GCSE in school performance tables but as the equivalent of 2 GCSE s for the girls In the 8 (no longer just 5) A*-C measure a maximum of two BTECs can be counted. All BTEC level 2 courses now include a 20% externally assessed component this is often now an exam. Graded as Level 1 (D-G at GCSE), Level 2 Pass = C, Level 2 Merit = B, Level 2 Distinction = A, Level 2 Distinction + = A*

6 PROGRESSION at Post-16 GCSEs and BTECs enable students to progress to further study at post -16 and many clear progression routes are on offer in our Sixth Form RR6. Progression to further study from Key Stage 4 will depend upon the number and nature of the grades achieved: Students who achieve mostly grades A* - C at GCSE or Merit / Distinction Level in their BTECs will move to level 3 study which is either AS/A levels, BTEC Nationals or a variety of vocational or combined qualifications. Students need to achieve a grade B or higher at GCSE to progress onto specific A Level courses and a Merit or higher to progress onto A Level equivalent Level 3 BTEC courses. Students who are awarded mostly grades D G at GCSE or Pass Level in their BTECs can strengthen their base with further qualifications at level 2 elsewhere at local colleges.

9 Pathway entry requirements: Each student will follow either the PURPLE PATHWAY, CERISE PATHWAY or the GREEN PATHWAY. Which pathway they are on is decided by their working grades in February 2014 in English and Maths. Each pathway has extra subjects as part of their core. Each pathway also has optional subjects.

10 English and Maths learning time in each Pathway On the PURPLE PATHWAY, students will study: 7 hours in total for English Language and English Literature GCSEs per fortnight 6 hours per fortnight for Mathematics GCSE On the CERISE PATHWAY, students will study: 9 hours in total for either English GCSE (Combined Language and Literature) or for those who can achieve at least a B in both, English Language and English Literature GCSEs per fortnight 8 hours per fortnight for Mathematics GCSE On the GREEN PATHWAY, students will study: 10 hours in total for English GCSE (Combined Language and Literature) per fortnight 10 hours per fortnight for Mathematics GCSE The aim of these extended hours in English and Mathematics for the CERISE and GREEN pathways is to maximise their grades in these subjects. Students need at least C s in both English and Maths to progress to post-16 study, training or into most job roles.

11 So how do I know which pathway my daughter is on? If their February working levels for English and Maths are both level 6b or above (level 6a,7 or 8) then they are a PURPLE PATHWAY student. If their February working levels for English and Maths are both level 6c or level 5a then they are a CERISE PATHWAY student. If their February working levels for English and Maths not level 5a or above then they are a GREEN PATHWAY student.

13 The Core: Core subjects are the ones which everyone studies in years 10 and 11: PSHE English and English Literature 1 or 2 GCSEs Religious Studies GCSE or ½ GCSE Core Subjects for all students at Ricards Lodge 2014 Mathematics 1 GCSE Core PE Core Science 1 GCSE / 1BTEC

14 So what does it mean to be on the PURPLE PATHWAY? Their core subjects also include: Additional Science or Triple Science (they need to be working at a 7b in Science to do Triple Science) History OR Geography (they choose which) French or Spanish (whichever language they currently study) From this year the top learning group students who have studied two languages will be given the chance to take both (this will mean they do the second language in an option block)

15 So what does it mean to be on the CERISE PATHWAY? They will have additional time for English, Maths and Core Science to ensure their best opportunity of achieving grades C and above in these subjects. They will sit either the Combined GCSE in English Language and Literature or the two individual GCSEs depending on their progress in English in the Summer Term of Year 9. Their core subjects also include: A Design Technology course: Graphics Resistant Materials Textiles Food Technology They choose which course they would like to do.

16 Heritage / Home Languages Any students who are fluent in a heritage language which can be taken at GCSE will be able to do so e.g: Arabic Urdu Chinese Portuguese German

17 So.. What does it mean to be on the GREEN PATHWAY? They will have increased additional time for English and Maths to ensure their best opportunity of achieving their highest possible grades in these subjects. They will sit the Combined GCSE in English Language and Literature. They will sit BTEC Applied Science Their core subjects also include: A Design Technology course: Graphics Resistant Materials Textiles Food Technology They choose which course they would like to do.

18 So what about the options? There are two option boxes to choose subjects from for PURPLE PATHWAY students There are three option boxes to choose subjects from if you are a CERISE PATHWAY or GREEN PATHWAY student

19 What subjects are in the option blocks? GCSEs: Additional Science, Languages, History, Geography, DT: Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Food Technology, Drama, Music, Art, Art Textiles, Film Studies BTECs: Health and Social Care, Sport ICT, Work Skills Creative Media Production Travel and Tourism Performing Arts Acting, Dance, Production Arts or Musical Theatre Music
