5 Attendance 90% = ½ day missed per week. ½ day a week = ½ a year (over 5 years). 19 days missed per year = full grade down in every subject area (DfE). The greater the attendance, the greater the achievement.

7 New grading system New grading system for all GCSE Subjects, except Textiles, Product Design and Resistant Materials Numbers 9 1 used instead of A* - G BTEC qualifications still graded Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*

8 New grading system Grade 4 equivalent to the bottom of a Grade C

9 New grading system Grade 5 is equivalent to the top of a Grade C. It is new good pass.

10 New grading system Grade 8 equivalent to A*

11 New grading system Grade 9 awarded to top 3% nationally

12 Student Targets Students have been set targets based on their KS2 SATs scores. Targets have been set to ensure that students make better progress than similar students nationally. Targets will be reviewed throughout the year and may be increased.

23 Year 10 All students are studying Biology, Chemistry & Physics units during Year 10. All students will complete exams in all 3 subject areas at the end of Year 11. Students will receive 2 grades for science this is the Science Trilogy Pathway. Students that opted for Triple Science will receive 3 separate grades for Science.

29 What are they? Top universities in the country (eg. Oxbridge, Russell Group). High demand courses - competitive (eg. Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry). Set highest possible entry requirements. Early applications - deadline 15 October (Year13).

30 What do they look for? Students with very high grades at GCSE, AS and A Level Students who can demonstrate: A track record of academic excellence Passion for their chosen subject The ability to reason, analyse and debate articulately Evidence of independent learning Intellectual curiosity, commitment and creativity Resilience, resourcefulness, responsibility and reflection The ability to problem-solve References that indicate all of the above

31 What students can do Compile a reading list of books and read them. Read academic articles or journals. Identify a topic that they have really enjoyed in school and do a bit of further research into it. Visit museums, exhibitions, national trust properties, theatre productions. Linguists should try to find opportunities to use their language. Read a quality newspaper, all of it, at least once a week. Get relevant work experience if possible.

33 The demands you can help your child with Being more self-motivated and taking more responsibility for their own learning. Asking when they do not understand. (This requires confidence and can be difficult at a time when friends opinions hold such sway.) Developing their abilities to overcome frustrations. Organising themselves, notes, hand outs and information for different subjects and different topics within these. Completing work at home, independently. Organising and planning their time over longer periods, for example to complete a coursework project. Understanding the exam structure and the relative importance of each piece of work to their final grade. Planning and carrying out their revision. Perfecting their exam technique.

Advisor help break down tasks, make them more manageable, build in time for relaxation/flexibility. Go-between liaise with Head of Houses. Study buddy testing, review revision strategies. Researcher/Interpreter - help understand exam structure and content, find past papers.

Exercise or some light relief. Eating regularly and sensibly. Seeking advice from subject staff and tutors content/technique/timings/targets.

36 Effective revision Create colour coded mind maps. Create post-it wall chart of key words, key terms and formulae. Regularly revisit and consolidate notes. Self-testing and study buddy testing/explanation. Past papers timing. Memory Techniques: Acronyms use letter of first word to make a word to prompt memory (MAIN causes of WW1). Picture Stories putting revision ideas into a chronological story. Mnemonics helps remember order (Never Eat Shredded Wheat). Review how is the plan going? Is it working for you?
