7 Recent Government Changes Progress 8 Progress 8 will be introduced for all schools in 2016 (based on 2016 exam results) and will be an indication of the progress made by students based on their key stage 2 results. The new measure will be based on students progress measured across eight subjects: English; mathematics; three other English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects o sciences, o computer science, o geography, o history and o languages; three further subjects, which can be from the range of EBacc subjects, or can be any other approved arts, academic, or vocational qualification. From 2016, schools will be judged on their results related to the Progress 8 measure, not the traditional 5 A* - C scoring system. At Longsands Academy we expect all students to make a minimum of 3 levels of progress based on their Key Stage 2 results. Therefore the following table shows the Minimum Expected Grades (MEG) that we expect students to achieve in their GCSES based on their Key Stage 2 levels: Key Stage 2 Level Minimum Expected Grade Level 5 B Level 4 C Level 3 D The MEG will be reported in each assessment. Please note that this is the minimum, we anticipate that many of our students will make at least 4 levels of progress. Other information will be available about schools, including the following headline measures of performance: - Attainment 8 - showing pupils average achievement in the same group of subjects as the Progress 8 measure. - English and mathematics the percentage of pupils achieving a C grade or better in both English (either Language or Literature) and mathematics. - Double-weighting of English Key Stage 4 Information Booklet 7

8 If a student sits both English Language and English Literature, the higher grade is double-weighted. The lower grade will still count in the open group of subjects (not in the EBacc slots). - The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) will show the percentage of pupils achieving good grades (A* - C) across a range of academic subjects The EBacc is not a new qualification in itself but recognises students achievements across a core of selected academic subjects: English/Maths/Sciences/Language/Humanities Key Stage 4 Examinations We enter students for examinations, using the following examination boards: AQA - Assessment and Qualifications Alliance EDEXCEL - London Examinations Centre OCR - Oxford, Cambridge and RSA WJEC - Welsh Joint Education Committee CIE Cambridge International Examination Departments will make decisions on the appropriate tier of entry during Year 11 for each student, where applicable. The following examination boards are currently being used by departments: GCSE and BTEC L2 Subject (Levels 1 and 2) Board GCSE/BTEC Art & Design (Fine Art) OCR J161 Art & Design (Graphics) OCR J162 Art & Design (Photography) OCR J163 Biology AQA 4401 Business Studies AQA 4133 BTEC Award in Business L2 Edexcel BJK88 Chemistry AQA 4402 Dance AQA 4232 Key Stage 4 Information Booklet 8

10 Grading the new GCSEs in 2017 New GCSEs in English language, English literature and maths will be taught in schools in England from September 2015, with students getting their results in August Further subjects will see new GCSEs introduced over the following two years. The new GCSEs will be graded 1 to 9, with 9 being the top grade. Key points Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 4 and above as currently achieve a grade C and above. Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 7 and above as currently achieve an A and above. For each exam, the top 20 per cent of those who get grade 7 or above will get a grade 9 the very highest performers. The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned with the bottom of grade G. Grade 5 will be positioned in the top third of the marks for a current grade C and bottom third of the marks for a current grade B. This will mean it will be of greater demand than the present grade C. Key Stage 4 Information Booklet 10

11 Average Point Scores (APS) Longsands Academy During the current period of academic transition Longsands Academy will continue to use the average point scores (APS) to guide entry requirements for post 16 education choices. APS allows students to access subjects based on their grades in order to increase their chance of success in the subjects that they opt for. APS entry requirements stipulate that students require a minimum average of 40 points from their top 8 GCSE grades in order to continue their education and maximise their chances of success at Longsands Academy. Please note that many A level subjects have additional entry qualifications, eg. Maths requires a grade A at GCSE and an APS OF 47.5 Based on previous Government guidelines, average point scores are worked out using the following data: Grade Full GCSE points A* 58 A 52 B 46 C 40 D 34 E 28 F 22 G 16 BTECs and ICT Nationals are counted as a single subject. The grades awarded are equivalent to GCSE grades: BTEC/ ICT Nat GCSE Equivalent Points grade Distinction* A* 58 Distinction A 52 Merit B 46 Pass C 40 Students who are studying double science receive double points for the grade that they have been awarded. Therefore, a C grade for double science is equivalent to CC, which contributes 80 GCSE points towards their total. Whilst the APS is based on grades achieved in their best 8 subjects it is important that your son/ daughter continues to work hard to achieve the best possible grade in all of their subjects as they are all reported on their examination certificates, therefore every subject matters.
