3 Professional Impressive, Expressive, and Practical 4K Video Production Sony s 4K equipment was used to shoot a Red Bull Athlete, Yohei Uchino *BMX Flatland who over the past two years has held the title of world champion of the BMX Flatland World Circuit Various scenes show him as he engages in strenuous practice from morning till night, while also preparing mentally in the quiet but intense atmosphere of a darkened Kyoto temple A 4K system from Sony covered the entire process shooting, recording, editing, reviewing, and archiving using the XAVC format throughout to achieve a smooth and consistent workflow for both 4K and HD resolutions This 4K technology was also leveraged to produce high-frame-rate HD capture, bringing HD imagery to a new level of expressiveness The results demonstrate that Sony s systems deliver effective performance and powerful, expressive results in both 4K and HD resolutions * BMX is a cycle sport performed on BMX bikes Behind the scenes of 4K live production system video BMX Scene BC & PRODUCTION 4K Live Production 1

4 Beautiful 4K Resolution Shooting took place over three days 18 to 20 May 2014 at Kyoto s famed Tōfukuji and Daikakuji temples Sony constructed a simple, compact base system consisting of a PMW-F55 4K camera together with other key 4K devices from Sony This system was then extended by adding the high-end F65 4K camera with its 8K CMOS image sensor, enabling impressive and highly detailed 4K shooting at 2x slow-motion The system s superlative mobility made it easy to switch between 4K-live and ENG shooting styles, enabling effective shooting even under considerable time and space constraints This type of system is especially well suited to sports and other fast-moving events, when it is particularly important to capture all significant action without letting crucial moments go by In the temple scenes, Uchino was shown in meditative concentration Although the lighting was dim, the result included all the latticework detail, the outside view that s visible through the latticework, the temple pillars, incense fumes, and incoming beams of light Scene BCproduction 4K Live Production 2

5 Professional F65 4K Live System Delivers 4K 120p Slow-motion Simultaneous shooting in four different modes 4K 60p, 4K 120p, HD 240p, and HD 360p was accomplished with the same angle using a system that comprised two PMW-F55 cameras each with a CA-4000 camera system adaptor and an F65 camera with an SKC-4065 dedicated adaptor together with a CA-4000 and SKC-PB40 power booster unit In other BMX performance scenes, various camera angles were used to capture every technical feat, as well as the concentration and sweat on Uchino s face Cameras were positioned at low, high, and centered angles or a camera crane was used to ensure sufficient variation Shots from all of the cameras were recorded to an XAVC server To protect the temple grounds and avoid disturbing sightseers, we set up a base tent beyond a surrounding moat, located at about 100 meters from the shooting area It was no problem to connect cameras by fiber cable, as connection distances of up to 2 km can be supported Other equipment included an MVS-8000X switcher, PCM-678 microphone, PWS-4400 server, and PVM-X300 monitor The entire system covering all processes, from recording to monitoring consisted of Sony products Using XAVC ensured an effective file-based workflow This allowed for rapid transfer of the large quantities of data that were generated by the system, and enabled simple nonlinear editing without any compromise in image quality Scene BC & PRODUCTION 4K Live Production 3

7 Focus High-frame-rate HD capture for impressive slow-motion images HFR Software, SZC-2002 for BPU-4000 The PMW-F55 incorporates the super 35 mm 4K CMOS image sensor, enabling capture with 4x the resolution of HD Utilizing this in HD shooting achieves extreme high-speed image capture at a maximum of 35964/300 fps Captured images can be recorded to Sony s server PWS-4400 Multi Port AV Storage Unit, which can replay the video at 4x slow-motion 23976/200 fps and 6x slow-motion 35964/300 fps The high-end F65, with an attached dedicated SKC-4065 adaptor and a camera system adaptor CA-4000, delivers 4K resolution at frame rates of up to 120 fps This product significantly extends the expressive range of 4K live production K for Beyond The Quest for Greater Resolution The high-end F65 camera s 8K image sensor also delivers a very wide dynamic range When used together with the SR-R4 SRMASTER Portable Memory Recorder at the Kyoto shooting, the F65 successfully achieved raw 8K resolution, revealing the true and detailed beauty of the city s temples A BPU-8000 baseband unit successfully processed the 8K and 4K data from SR memory in real time, allowing the result to be viewed on a PVM-X300 monitor Scene BC & PRODUCTION 4K Live Production 4
