(Tuesday & Thursday after class) Mode of instruction and course access: This course is a mixture of Lecture (primary) and lab. The lab portion will be associated with the MS Office textbook. The course will utilize the Texas A&M Central Texas Blackboard. Therefore students will need to have a username and password to access Blackboard Student-instructor interaction: Instructor office hours will be immediately after class until 3:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Other times are possible but must be arranged with the instructor. Student s information will be via Blackboard. 2 COURSE INFORMATION 1.0 Course Overview and description: CISK 300. Computer Tech and Impact. Explores today and tomorrow s technology with special attention to the impact on real people at home, work, and school. Many topics are presented: hardware and software fundamentals, essential applications, telecommunications, internet, artificial intelligence, programming, and the future of these technologies. Students work with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software, other applications, and a programming language. The course is designed those students with little or no experience with personal computers and/or the applications presented. 2.0 Course Objective: 2.1 Student Learning Outcomes Learn basic through advanced computer concepts with an emphasis on both the personal computer and enterprise computing.2.2 Competency Goals Statements (certification or standards) 2.1. Knowledge Outcomes-Learn basic through advanced computer concepts with an emphasis on both the personal computer and enterprise computing Recognize the importance of computer literacy Identify the components of a computer Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using computers Recognize the purpose of a network Discuss the uses of the Internet and World Wide Web Explain how to access and connect to the Internet Analyze an IP address Describe the components of a processor and how they complete a machine cycle Differentiate between types of storage devices and storage media Describe the functions of an operating system Describe the various network communications standards 2.2. Skill Outcomes- Be able to use Microsoft office to perform computing tasks: Understanding Office 2007 Professional Starting an Office Program Using Menus, Toolbars, and the Task Pane Create, edit and print a Word document Create, edit and print Excel worksheet Create, edit and print an Access database Create, edit and present a PowerPoint presentation Use Office Integration 3.0 Required Reading and Textbook(s): 2

4 5.0 Grading Criteria Rubric and Conversion Test Points Grading Scale Grade Participation A Quiz (6, 50 Pts each) B Mid-Term Exam C Final Exam D Total Points 1000 Below 600 F 6.0 Posting of Grades: All student grades should be posted on the Blackboard Grade book and students should monitor their grading status through this tool. Add some statement about turn-around time for grades to be posted. Example: Grades for Quizzes will be posted the day after the availability period has passed. Grades for Weekly Assignments and Papers will be posted the Monday following the due date. TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS AND SUPPORT 7.1 Technology Requirements This course will use the new TAMU-CT Blackboard Learn learning management system for class communications, content distribution, and assessments. Logon to to access the course. Username: Your Tarleton address (the complete address, e.g. Initial password: Your DuckTrax ID (UID) For this course, you will need reliable and frequent access to a computer and to the Internet. You will also need a headset with a microphone or speakers and a microphone to be able to listen to online resources and conduct other activities in the course. If you do not have frequent and reliable access to a computer with Internet connection, please consider dropping this course or contact me (your and phone number) to discuss your situation. Blackboard supports the most common operating systems: PC: Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, Mac: Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS 10.4 Tiger Check browser and computer compatibility by following the Browser Check link on the TAMU-CTBlackboard logon page. ( This is a CRITICAL step as these settings are important for when you take an exam or submit an assignment. Upon logging on to Blackboard Learn, you will see a link to Blackboard Student Orientation under My Courses tab. Click on that link and study the materials in this orientation course. The new Blackboard is a brand-new interface and you will have to come up to speed with it really quickly. This orientation course will help you get there. There is also a link to Blackboard Help from inside the course on the left-hand menu bar. 7.2 Technology Support 4

5 For technological or computer issues, students should contact the TAMU-CT Blackboard Support Services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Support Portal: Online chat (through the support portal at: Phone: (855) Drop Policy: If you discover that you need to drop this class, you must go to the Records Office and ask for the necessary paperwork. Professors cannot drop students; this is always the responsibility of the student. The record s office will give a deadline for which the form must be returned, completely signed. Once you return the signed form to the records office and wait 24 hours, you must go into Duck Trax and confirm that you are no longer enrolled. If you are still enrolled, FOLLOW- UP with the records office immediately. You are to attend class until the procedure is complete to avoid penalty for absence. Should you miss the deadline or fail to follow the procedure, you will receive an F in the course. 5
