1 CHAPTER 1 Common Features of Office 2010 More Skills 11 Capture Screens with the Snipping Tool The Snipping Tool is a Windows program that creates screen captures. A screen shot or snip is a picture of your computer screen, a window, or a selected region saved as a file that can be printed or shared electronically. To complete this activity, you will need the following file: New blank Word document You will save your files as: Lastname_Firstname_cf01_Snip1 Lastname_Firstname_cf01_Snip2 1. If you are saving your work on a USB flash drive, be sure that the USB flash drive is inserted into your computer. 2. Click the Start button, and then click the Computer command. 3. In the Computer window, open the drive and folders in which you are saving your work, and then, in the Navigation pane, click the Common Features Chapter 1 folder you created previously. 4. Compare your screen with Figure 1. If necessary, Maximize the Computer window. 2 5. Click Start, and then click All Programs. Click the Accessories folder, and then click Snipping Tool. If you do not have the Snipping Tool, which is available in all versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista Home Premium or higher editions, press p to store the screen capture in the Clipboard, and then paste the screen into a Word document. 6. In the Snipping Tool window, click the arrow to the right of the New button the New button arrow to display a list of snip types as shown in Figure 2 and summarized in Figure 3. 3 7. In the displayed list, click Full-screen Snip, and then compare your screen with Figure 4. The Snipping Tool window displays the screen capture. Here you can save the screen capture file, add comments, or send the screen capture using . 4 8. On the Snipping Tool toolbar, click the Pen button arrow, and then click Red Pen. 9. In the screen capture, use the mouse to draw a circle around the file Lastname_Firstname_ cf01_visit3. If necessary, click the Eraser button, use the mouse to erase your original circle, and then try again. 10. If necessary, in the Snipping Tool window, scroll down to display your storage device in the Navigation pane. On the Snipping Tool toolbar, click the Highlighter button. 5 11. On the Snipping Tool toolbar, click the Save Snip button. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to your Common Features Chapter 1 folder. 12. Click in the File name box, and then using your own name, replace the existing name with Lastname_Firstname_cf01_Snip1 Be sure that the Save as type displays JPEG file. If necessary, click the Save as type arrow, and then click JPEG file. Click the Save button. 13. Close the Snipping Tool mark-up window. In your Common Features Chapter 1 folder, double-click Lastname_Firstname_cf01_Snip1 to open the file, and then compare your screen with Figure 6. If necessary, Maximize the Windows Photo Viewer window. The snip is opened in Windows Photo Viewer. Your computer may be configured to open the file in a different program. 6 14. Close Windows Photo Viewer. 15. Start Microsoft Word 2010 to create a new, blank document. Type your first and last names, and then press J. 16. On the taskbar, click the Windows Explorer button. In the file list, locate and then right-click Lastname_Firstname_cf01_Snip1. From the shortcut menu, click Copy. 17. On the taskbar, click the Word button. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Paste button to paste the snip. Compare your screen with Figure 7. Snip pasted into the Word document Figure Click the Save button. In the Save As dialog box, navigate as needed to display your Common Features Chapter 1 file list. In the File name box, type Lastname_ Firstname_cf01_Snip2 and then click Save. 19. If you are printing your work for this chapter, print the Word document, and then retrieve your printout from the printer. 20. Click the File tab, and then click Exit. Close the Windows Explorer window. 21. Submit your printout or files as directed by your instructor.
