2 Welcome Welcome to Lydia Eva Court, a brand new care home in Gorleston. The wonderfully designed home is built over 2 floors with a beautiful reception and communal areas and gardens. It provides residential care for up to 88 people in 6 separate areas and specialises in caring for people who are living with dementia. Lydia Eva Court is built on the site of the former Peterhouse School, and is very close to the new school, which is situated behind the new home. It opened in June 2014 and was named by the residents from Clere House, Magdalen House and Mildred Stone House, who moved to the home when it first opened. The Lydia Eva is the UK s last surviving steam drifter and is currently moored at the North Quay in Great Yarmouth as a working museum boat. Residents chose a name that is synonymous with Norfolk s east coast and holds great historical significance for the communities of Gorleston and Great Yarmouth. Dignity in everything we do...

3 Facilities at the home Design Lydia Eva Court has been designed so that residents can live in small communities. There are 6 areas in the home with a maximum of 15 rooms in each area. The architects of the new home took advice from Stirling University, world-renowned experts in the design of buildings for people living with dementia. Rooms In each area, residents have their own well-appointed room with large en suite facilities. Each room has a modern resident monitor system which the care team can monitor remotely as well as an emergency call system, fire alarm controls and flat screen TV. Residents can have a telephone installed in the room at their own expense. Communal areas Outside the bedrooms, there is a comfortable and welcoming communal lounge, with sofas, chairs, bookshelves and a large screen TV. All communal lounges overlook the beautiful, landscaped gardens. There is also a quiet room, where residents can read, listen to the radio or use the internet. Each area has its own dining room where all meals are served from the main kitchen in the home. Café at the front of the home, near to the main reception, is a cafe area which is a lovely space for residents, families, children and grandchildren to use. It has been designed as a destination for visitors to bring residents as well as a bright and airy space to enjoy a drink and a snack. Hairdressing salon There is a wonderful salon which is perfect for pampering. Gardens Outside, the landscaped gardens have been designed using concepts and research from Stirling University. The gardens have wonderfully smelling plants and flowers, designed to stimulate all senses. The pathways have been planned to avoid confusion and frustration for residents. There is also a large roof terrace with comfortable chairs and good shaded areas. 3

4 Meals and dining Meals are freshly prepared on site by our catering staff. Each area of the home has its own dining area where meals are served from the main kitchen. A varied seasonal menu is offered each day and residents are consulted about their preferences when menus are reviewed periodically. Special diets and individual requests are catered for, where possible. Morning and afternoon refreshments are served between meals and drinks and are always available on request. A selection of sandwiches, cakes, yoghurts and other snacks are also available 24 hours a day. 4

5 Living with NorseCare Health and personal care our prime concern Peace of mind and quality of life is important to us at all NorseCare homes, which is why we aim to provide a friendly environment in which to live, and to be on hand to help and advise on individual needs. The Manager, or one of the Team Leaders, will always be available to answer any questions and address any concerns. Key workers and care plans All residents at Lydia Eva Court are allocated a key worker who, under the supervision of one of the Team Leaders, is responsible for agreeing a personal care plan. The care plan, which is regularly reviewed with residents and their family, covers details of how they would like to be cared for and any personal choices and interests. Family members and friends can of course, be involved in putting together this care plan; we actively encourage them to be included. The plan will also include an assessment of any risks and how these need to be managed, details of any specific health care needs, medication, doctor and any other community therapy services provided. We do not provide medical or nursing care at Lydia Eva Court. Any nursing needs will be met by the visiting community nursing staff. It may be possible to maintain a resident s doctor if the medical practice covers the area around Lydia Eva Court. Continuity and a familiar face can be reassuring and is something we always encourage. If this is not possible, we are able to register residents with a local surgery. There are opticians, dentists and chiropodists within the local area and staff are always happy to assist in making appointments. Family support for these services and hospital appointments is valued. 5

6 Living with NorseCare Daily activities How residents spend their day is entirely up to them and we encourage them to make as many choices as possible about their interests and activities. We will always try to provide or facilitate social activities that promote a high quality of life, including outings to shops, the coast or theatre, parties and musical sessions. If residents have a particular interest that they would like to continue or try, we will be pleased to include it in the personal care plan and help them to continue to enjoy it. Dignity All residents at Lydia Eva Court are treated with dignity and respect. We have registered dignity champions who actively promote and monitor dignity, and we are always happy to discuss this with residents, families and friends. Lydia Eva Court is a non-smoking home and smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Everyone is supported to practice his or her own religious faith and help will be given to residents to enable them to attend the place of worship of their choice. 6

7 Families and friends Information for families and friends Families and friends are most welcome to visit at any time. We are very keen to include them as part of our Lydia Eva Court family, so we encourage them to be as involved in the care of our residents as they wish to be. We have a visitor s room available for overnight stays if required. Visitors may bring in well-behaved pets to visit. Having your say on the quality of the service we provide Residents and families at Lydia Eva Court are regularly consulted on issues surrounding the home. Regular meetings are held at which residents and their families are encouraged to discuss issues that they are concerned about, and to put forward ideas to enhance their lives such as food, outings and entertainment. Residents are invited to provide thoughts and opinions at any time by speaking to the manager, their key worker or the team leader on duty. We always welcome feedback from relatives and friends concerning any issues that may be brought up during their visit. We also take a range of audits to get feedback on the care that is delivered, and we always act promptly in response to complaints. Charges the amount you will pay for your care will depend on an assessment of your financial circumstances. The charges made for care covers all personal care and accommodation costs, food, drinks, heating, lighting, laundry (except dry cleaning). Personal items such as clothing, toiletries, hairdressing, private chiropody and newspapers are not included in the charge.
