1 Internship opportunities at Canadian missions in China The Embassy of Canada to China - Beijing The Consulate General of Canada - Shanghai The Consulate General of Canada - Chongqing The Consulate General of Canada - Guangzhou The Consulate General of Canada - Hong Kong Program description The Embassy of Canada to China in Beijing, the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai, the Consulate General of Canada in Guangzhou, the Consulate General of Canada in Chongqing, and the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macao, welcome applications for internship opportunities available from mid-june to December Internship opportunities at Canadian missions in China provide successful candidates with an opportunity to be involved in governmental affairs and to develop an understanding of the Canada-China bilateral relationship or the Canada-Hong Kong relationship. The internships are six months in duration. Please note that, in exceptional cases, the duration of the internship may be shorter or longer than six months. Please refer to the following pages for complete descriptions of the available internship positions. Internship opportunities at Canadian missions in China June to December 2015
2 Eligibility Only Canadian citizens may apply. Selected candidates must pass a reliability security screening before the start of the internship. Remuneration and health insurance The internships are non-remunerating, and interns are not eligible for any benefits. Interns will be reimbursed for their visa fee upon presentation of receipt. It is mandatory for interns to arrange their own travel and health insurance to cover them for the full duration of the internship. Successful candidates will be asked to show proof of insurance prior to starting work. Application process Candidates should identify their preferred internship(s) and apply through their academic institutions. Candidates should submit their curriculum vitae, a letter of intent of strictly one page or less, and a recent academic transcript. 3 Beijing Embassy of Canada >> Internship in the Public Diplomacy Section The intern in the Public Diplomacy Section will work closely with other officers in the section on a range of projects, including: planning and coordinating cultural and public events, creating content for the Embassy s social media account and website, writing and contributing to reports and background briefs, and conducting research on various topics. The intern will also provide support in the planning and delivery of incoming missions, delegations, and high-level visits. Through this internship, the intern will acquire in-depth understanding of the functioning of an Embassy and how Canada's public diplomacy is put into practice. knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. Strong computer proficiency and graphic design skills are also desirable. >> Internship in the Economics and Finance section As an intern in the Economics and Finance Section, the successful applicant will work closely with the team on a variety of research projects relating to China s economy. Assignments are varied and can range from topics on competiveness, investment trends, and the general economic climate. The intern will be responsible for supporting the team by gathering and manipulating data, retrieving newspaper articles, summarizing third-party research, and producing reports. The intern will gain a better understanding of various sectors of the Chinese economy and how they impact Canada and Canadian companies. The intern will also acquire an in-depth understanding of the functioning of an Embassy, how applied economic research is conducted, and how Canada's diplomacy is put into practice. 4 knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. A background in economics, and experience with spreadsheets and PowerPoint, are also desirable. >> Internship in the Political Section (2 Positions) As interns in the Political Section, the successful applicants will work closely with political officers in monitoring China's political landscape and drafting timely reports on trends and significant changes in the policy environment affecting Canada s bilateral interests and activities in China. Interns will also be responsible for the conduct of advanced research covering various issues of interest to Canada in China, including: governance and human rights, domestic politics, issues related to the environment, labour, health, legal issues, China s foreign policy, regional security, and arctic policy. Interns will assist the Political Section in the planning and delivery of incoming missions, delegations and high-level visits, and outreach in China by mission staff, as well as develop and implement special projects. Interns will also be responsible for the production of daily press scans and other related duties as required. Through this internship, interns will acquire an in-depth understanding of the functioning of an Embassy and how Canada's diplomacy is put into practice. knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. 5 >> Internship in the Trade Section (2 Positions) As interns in the Trade Section, the successful applicants will work closely with trade commissioners to organize and implement events as well as conduct research. The interns will support trade commissioners working in sectorial and functional teams covering diverse files such as education, clean technologies, natural resources, information and communications technology, aerospace, life sciences and investment. Interns will conduct research on Canadian companies operating in China and identify market opportunities available to Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Interns will be asked to contribute to social media campaigns aimed at attracting Canadian SMEs to the Chinese market and equipping these companies with the tools and knowledge necessary to compete in the Chinese business environment. Through this internship, the intern will gain insight into the mandate and work of the Embassy and the Trade Section, its function within the China Network, and, most importantly, what Canadian interests are and how the Embassy advances Canadian priorities. knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. 6 Shanghai Consulate General of Canada >> Internship in the Trade Section As an intern in the Trade Section, the successful applicant will work closely with officers to organize and implement events to attract companies with potential to invest in Canada. The intern will research, develop and establish corporate profiles of the following: East Chinabased companies with interest in investing in Canada, regional centers with investment potential, and the 200+ Canadian companies that have invested in the region. The intern will contact companies to ascertain their interest in investing in Canada. The intern will conduct research into local incentives offered to foreign companies and into East China s Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor (QDII) program. In addition to updating a list of industrial parks in East China, the intern will draft profiles of QDII limited partners and asset managers and of venture capital organizations and companies in East China. The intern will compile a database of Canadian alumni currently employed in the Shanghai financial services industry, in conjunction with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the Canada-China Business Council. Through this internship, the intern will gain insight into the mandate and work of the Consulate and the Trade Section, its function within the China Network, and, most importantly, what Canadian interests are and how the Consulate advances Canadian priorities. knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. 7 >> Internship in the Common Services Section As an intern in the Common Services Section, the successful applicant will work closely with officers in a number of areas related to the internal operations of the Consulate General. Within the Finance Section, the intern will assist in processing transactions and participate in preparing financial reports. As a member of the Property Section, the intern will assist with drafting and executing contracts, as well as working with local contractors to complete property projects. The intern will also provide logistical support, as necessary, during high-level visits. The intern will also have an opportunity to play a role on the Consular Services team, providing consular assistance to Canadians in the region. Through this internship, the successful candidate will acquire an in-depth understanding of the internal functioning of a Canadian Government Office abroad. knowledge of written and/or spoken Mandarin is an asset. 8 Chongqing Consulate General of Canada >> Internship at the Consulate General of Canada in Chongqing (2 Positions) The Canadian Consulate General in Chongqing is the smallest Canadian consulate in China, consisting of 12 full-time equivalent staff and covering the dynamic and fast-growing regions of Chongqing city, Sichuan province, Yunnan province, and Guizhou province. Especially due to the small size of the office, interns can expect to gain hands-on experience through direct involvement in projects, and can expect their work to have a measurable impact on the success of the team s initiatives. Successful applicants will work closely with lead officers in the Trade and Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Service sections on trade promotion and public diplomacy projects. Interns will provide support, including logistics and event management, in the planning and delivery of incoming missions, delegations and high-level visits. Interns will contribute to the Consulate s reporting and will assist in the development and implementation of special projects. Interns may also coordinate website, newsletter and other communications products, and will also be responsible for other duties as required. Through this internship, interns will gain an understanding of the mandate and work of the Consulate, its function within the China Network, and how the Consulate advances Canada s priorities and interests in Southwest China. Applicants should be comfortable working in a Chinese environment. Excellent speaking and writing skills in English and/or French are essential. 9 Guangzhou Consulate General of Canada >> Internship in the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Service (FPDS) Section As an intern in the FPDS Section, the successful applicant will work closely with officers in monitoring South China's political landscape and drafting timely reports on trends and significant changes in the policy environment affecting Canada s bilateral interests and activities in South China. The intern will also be responsible for the conduct of research covering various issues of interest to Canada in China, including: economic policy and developments, governance and human rights, provincial and local politics, issues related to the environment, labour, health, and legal issues. The successful applicant will also work closely with lead officers on public diplomacy projects and the Consul General's outreach, as well as academic and cultural affairs. The intern will provide support, including logistics and events management, in the planning and delivery of incoming missions, delegations and high level visits. Through this internship, the successful candidate will gain an understanding of the mandate and work of the Consulate and the FPDS Section, its function within the China Network, and, most importantly, what Canadian interests are and how the Consulate advances Canada s priorities. Excellent speaking and writing skills in English and/or French are essential. A major in political science, Asian studies, international relations, or any other fields related to the work of the FPDS Section is required. 10 Hong Kong Consulate General of Canada >> Internship in the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Service (FPDS) Section The successful applicant will work closely with lead officers in the Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Service Section in monitoring Hong Kong and Macao s political, human rights, and economic landscape, and drafting timely reports on trends and significant changes in these areas which impact Canada s bilateral interests and activities in Hong Kong, Macao, and the Greater China region. The intern will also work closely with the officers in charge of public affairs to update communications products, including providing regular content and updates for the Consulate General s social media platforms. The intern will provide support, including logistics and events management, in the planning and delivery of incoming missions, delegations and high-level visits. The intern will also assist in the development and implementation of special projects, and will also be responsible for other duties as required. Throughout this internship, the intern will gain an understanding of the mandate and work of the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong. The intern will also develop a thorough understanding of the specific framework (the One Country, Two Systems policy) which governs the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions within China. Interns will become part of the vibrant community of Canadians in Hong Kong, which is estimated at 300,000. This community includes dynamic young Canadians and Canadian students, as well as the Young Professionals Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (the largest such chamber outside of Canada). 11 >> Internship in the Immigration Section The successful applicant will work closely with immigration officers and analysts. The intern will learn how the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act are applied to individual applications for temporary resident visas as well as permanent residence in Canada. The intern may conduct research, liaise with other sections of the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong as well as with headquarters in Ottawa, and report on immigration and anti-fraud issues in China. They will assist with antifraud work such as quality assurance exercises and internet searches, maintaining contacts with like-minded missions, assisting Canada Border Services Agency inland offices with investigations, providing information to Ports of Entry regarding inadmissible passengers, scheduling and organizing meetings, and planning capacity building sessions with various organizations. The intern will be involved in the development of the Immigration Section's social media strategy, coordinating with social media partners in the Embassy. Through this internship, the intern will gain an understanding of the mandate of Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency. Applicants should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. knowledge of written and/or spoken Cantonese is an asset. >> Internship in the Consular Section Working in the largest passport and citizenship issuance operations outside Canada, the successful applicant will work closely with the Consul and Consular Officers to provide passport, citizenship, notarial and emergency services to Canadians residing in Hong Kong and Macao. The intern will develop a good understanding of our international and domestic frameworks such as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, Transfer of Offenders Treaty, Privacy Act, Evidence Act, Canadian Passport Order, Citizenship Act, and learn how these apply in the Consular field. 12 In our fast-paced environment, the intern will learn about the management strategies, technologies and business processes behind running a highly efficient and effective operation issuing over 27,000 passports and 3,000 citizenship certificates per year. The intern will also interact with clients by assisting in issuing passports, citizenship certificates and notarial documents. In addition, the intern will travel and participate in our quarterly outreach trip to Macao to provide consular services there. With the announcement of our 21st Century Consular Plan initiative, the intern will assist in developing new innovative outreach strategies on how to actively engage Canadians through research and analysis of existing marketing channels including social media, wiki, website, newsletter, SMS and mobile device applications. Managing emergency crises in times of natural disasters and large-scale accidents is an important function within the Consular program. The intern will assist with refining our emergency plans as well as develop an emergency crisis management simulation exercise. The intern will also have the opportunity to deal with specific consular cases such as arrest and detention, and off-loaded passengers. To gain first-hand experience of managing stakeholder partnerships, the intern will attend internal senior management meetings, as well as external meetings and networking events with partners such as other foreign Consulates and local government departments. The intern will also work on specific projects related to the management of mission operations in areas such as management of finance and budget management, business planning and reporting, human resources, property, and security. Applicants should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. knowledge of spoken and/or written Cantonese or Mandarin is an asset.
