3 MARKETING GUIDELINES

4 Marketing Information n All marketing must be reviewed and approved by SEU prior to publication. Examples: brochures, websites, advertisements, etc. n Questions? Contact Abby Jones, associate director of enrollment marketing. Phone: abjones@seu.edu

5 What SEU Marketing Does n We will post your student application at SEU.edu/apply/ext. Your site coordinator will receive submitted applications via . n We will provide information to sites regarding the following: Requesting print items Creating a Web page Branding and editing

6 How to Request Brochures Each site may request 500 complimentary print brochures that display their site information.* 1 2 Review sample brochure and required information/photos (see next two slides). Submit all required information and photos to Abby Jones, indicating how many brochures you d like.* 3 SEU marketing will create your brochure (usually takes about one week). 4 Abby will send you the created brochure for your review and approval. 5 Review brochure and suggest changes, or approve brochure for print. 6 If changes are needed, they will be done within a few days. Once approved, your brochures will be printed (usually takes about two weeks). *Additional brochures will be billed at cost to site.

9 Additional Print Materials Other print materials may be requested. n Examples: booklets, displays, info cards, promotional items n Charged as a direct cost to site n Price estimates available upon request

10 Extension Site Website 1 Sites may create a website/web page to advertise to students. 2 Once created, send the site URL to Abby Jones before the official launch. 3 SEU marketing will review the site. 4 Make any changes requested before receiving official approval. 5 Once approved, the website may be launched and advertised.

11 Review Details What will we be reviewing on your website? n Proper use of SEU logo and extension site logo n Proper presentation of relationship and SEU brand n Proper grammar and punctuation (Reference: AP Stylebook and Webster s New World College Dictionary) n Accurate hyperlinks n Accurate information

12 SEU Logo (Nameplate) n The only approved extension site nameplate n Other SEU logos should not be used. n Any exceptions must be approved by SEU.

13 Unapproved Logos n Please do not use any of the SEU logos below (or variations of them).

14 Site Logo Sites may create a separate logo with the name of your site to use alongside the SEU extension site nameplate. n The logos need to maintain their individuality. n Reference to SEU should be solely in the SEU nameplate. n Any exceptions to the guidelines must be approved by SEU.

16 Accreditation Statement Southeastern University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees. 19 Punctuation Type Description Example Comma Em Dash Omit the Oxford/serial comma in lists, unless it aids in the reader s comprehension. Names followed by Jr., Sr. or a Roman numeral do not have a comma after the last name. Use an em dash ( ) to relay a stronger break in thought or to draw notice to something important. Place a single space on either side of the em dash. The student is taking courses in history, math and English. Dr. Emile Hawkins Sr. SEU s Doctor of Education our first doctoral program began in summer En Dash Use an en dash ( ) to indicate ranges. Do not include space on either side of the en dash. In about minutes, the information session will begin. Hyphens Semicolons Do not use a hyphen to join an adverb ending in -ly and another descriptive word. Hyphenate part time and full time only when used as adjectives. Use the semicolon to set off a series that includes commas. A semicolon should be included before the last item in the series. biblically focused education Full-time students take 12 or more credits per semester. Professor Anderson has led student trips to Seattle, Washington; Orlando, Florida; and Cleveland, Ohio.

20 Academic Degrees n Spell out academic degrees and avoid abbreviations on first use. Subsequent uses can be abbreviated. Formal Use General Use Abbreviated Use Associate of Arts associate degree AA Bachelor of Science bachelor s degree BS Master of Arts master s degree MA n Abbreviations Do not use periods (AA, not A.A.). n Capitalization Formal use: Bachelor of Science in Marketing General use: master s degree in ministerial leadership

21 Dates Spell out months and days of the week. Commas En dash n Use when the day is mentioned between the month and year. SEU will play Warner on September 13, 2014, in our new stadium. n Omit when the day is not mentioned between the month and year. SEU s football team will begin play in September n Use when dates follow a day of the week. He decided that Friday, June 5, would be a good day for the campus event. n Use when referring to a period of time in years. the school year n Omit when year is preceded by from (use to ). from 2014 to 2015

22 Numbers n Spell out numbers one through nine and general numbers in copy. SEU includes six academic colleges. There are approximately 3,800 students. There are hundreds of events taking place on campus each year. n When a number is the first word of a sentence, spell it out or recast the sentence. n Express all percentages as figures. Use the % sign: 5% n For large numbers (1 million or greater), spell out million or billion: 10 million

23 Bulleted Lists n Use a colon to introduce a list. n Use a complete sentence to introduce the list. Usage Type of Sentence Example Correct Complete SEU offers degrees such as the following: Incorrect Incomplete SEU offers: n If the bullet point is a complete sentence or includes multiple sentences, use periods. n Be consistent in use. n Never use semicolons to separate bullet points.

24 Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement A pronoun often refers to something earlier or later in the text (its antecedent) and must agree in number (singular/plural). n Incorrect: A student should speak to their advisor before creating a class schedule. n Correct: A student should speak to his or her advisor before creating a class schedule. To avoid awkward overuse of the his or her phrase, recast the sentence using plurals. n Students should speak to their advisors before creating their class schedules.

25 Common Mistakes n admission (not admissions) n course work (two words, not one) n e.g., (used when giving examples; be sure to follow with a comma) n mission trip (mission used as an adjective) missions (noun) n toward (not towards)

26 Web n Time (in Web copy): Use a.m. and p.m. n URLs Use the shortest URL possible. Omit the and www. (fafsa.ed.org). n When referring to an SEU website, always capitalize the university s acronym (SEU.edu). n Web terminology (no hyphen) Internet Wi-Fi log in, log out (verb) login (noun/adjective) the Web a Web page website World Wide Web
