Video Surveillance Storage: Enabling infrastructure for next generation security systems
The Video Surveillance Market In 2014 globally $14 billion in equipment sales from branded vendors 245 million video surveillance cameras installed base 74 million new video surveillance cameras shipped 0.5 million law enforcement body worn cameras in use Demand remains high for video surveillance solutions. In addition to the increasing volume of surveillance cameras shipped annually, technological advances mean each new generation of surveillance cameras benefit from improvements in image quality. Image quality is a complex matrix influenced by many different elements. Generally, improved image quality means greater data storage requirements. Whilst there are continuing advances in compression technologies providing a trade-off between image quality, bandwidth and storage requirements, these cannot completely mitigate the increase in data associated with higher quality video. Simply put, more storage and more compute is required to manage data from an increasing number of surveillance cameras capturing higher quality video. The average price of a network surveillance camera has fallen dramatically. In 2010 the global average selling price from branded vendors to the channel was nearly $500. In 2015 this is expected to average under $150. Price decline has been a key driver in the market transition from analog to network cameras and the transition has led to a rapid increase in unit shipments. From 2010 to 2014, annual shipments of network video surveillance cameras increased ten-fold globally. In 2015 network camera shipments will surpass analog cameras for the first time. High market growth will continue from 2015 to 2019 by which time IHS forecasts annual unit shipments will more than double today s number. Increased video surveillance network deployments have led to a proliferation of larger, more distributed video surveillance networks and more interconnected higher-resolution cameras. Figure 1 shows the forecast revenues from global network surveillance cameras by resolution to The boom in video surveillance camera shipments and the increase in higher definition resolutions have resulted in a surge in data storage requirements for video surveillance systems. These storage requirements are amplified by emerging technologies which are growing in prevalence in the industry. Multi-sensor panoramic cameras, 4K compliant cameras and body worn cameras used by law enforcement provide even more video surveillance sensors and metadata into the data surge. Figure 1 - Global network surveillance camera shipments by resolution Revenues ($ million) $12,000 $10,000 $8,000 $6,000 $4,000 $2,000 $ Standard resolution Notes:HD resolution includes 720p and above Source: IHS HD resolution and above Year HD resolution and above IHS Growth in video surveillance sensors and the volume of data they are outputting is increasing storage requirements. In addition, retention times are growing as some end-users require their data stored for longer. Aside from security and protection, longer retention is being driven by other commercial factors. Threat of litigation from civil law suits have led to some end-
users storing video for longer. For example in some large North American retail deployments the cost of longer retention offset against potential costs of legal settlements. Longer retention also means a larger dataset for post recording video analytics for both security and business insights. Storing data for longer means end-users have the potential to increase the effectiveness of their analytics due to a larger dataset. As both data loads and retention times increase meeting storage requirements on a tight budget is especially difficult. With the plethora of solutions available, what should end-users and integrators consider regarding their storage options for video surveillance? Budget vs mission tradeoff The storage in a video surveillance system should be viewed in a similar way to cameras. Different camera models in a system are selected for different requirements, yet all capture video. Storage can be thought of in the same manner; different types of storage can be leveraged in one system. There is rarely a fixed value or frequency of access for recorded video surveillance footage over its lifetime, yet, too often a one-size fits all solution is implemented. Design should go beyond basic capacity planning for which there is an abundance of sufficient calculators. End-users and integrators should also consider some of the following key points regarding what they require from their storage: The majority of video surveillance data is never reviewed. Is your system geared to a heavy write focus? How does the value of your data change over time? Is there a data sub-set which is most mission critical or likely to require the most access? Can you easily move data in and out of this category? Do you want access to archiving, back-up and longer term retention in the same system? Would it be useful to pool data from multiple types of video devices (e.g. fixed, vehicle or body worn video surveillance cameras) and other sensors in one place? How easily can your solution support expansion? An increase in the value of video surveillance data has caused the industry to re-define data management. The default approach for video surveillance data management was a simple storage device or bank of devices, fill to capacity, overwrite and repeat. Now with more data being generated from a wider variety of sources a smarter allocation of resource is required, storage design must follow accordingly. To gain more insight and an increased return on investment from video surveillance data, a storage solution must balance high performance, high capacity and high retention. These three parameters can be flexed to provide the best trade-off between budget and mission whilst minimising sacrifice of redundancy, accessibility or scalability. When planned from the early stages of the project the storage solution can address as much of the mission criteria as possible without using a disproportionate chunk of budget. Analysis of the budget should take account of: What legislation and guidance do you need to comply with regarding data retention? What is the potential cost if you do not? What value is there on the insights you can gather from the data you collect?
A new approach to tiered storage A non-tiered single technology storage approach, which is sufficient in some IT environments, can be costly when required to meet the retention requirements for video surveillance data. Often future scalability, video quality and retention are sacrificed due to budget. This can leave end-users at a higher risk of litigation and operational difficulties. The concept of storing data between a smaller capacity primary tier and larger secondary tier is nothing new, yet, the visibility and integration between layers has been problematic. Thus for many people a tiered storage approach has been thought of as a two-tier active and archival split architecture. However, an intelligent, scalable tiered platform is different. It offers a holistic approach where a combination of different storage technologies and media types are pooled from multiple tiers though a single file system. This approach can provide a more effective use of budget to provide maximum operational value and retention time. Well suited for video surveillance data. Figure 2 shows an example of an intelligent, scalable tiered video surveillance storage architecture. Figure 2 Any combination of: Fixed cameras Body worn cameras Vehicle cameras Video / evidence management servers Analytics servers Single file system Movement between tiers Performance Cost Highest performance primary disk High capacity secondary disk High capacity file based tape Cloud storage Capacity
Intelligent scalable tiered storage enables unified access for all video surveillance data. This eliminates disparate islands or silos of storage created by separate archiving, different file/operating systems or differences in the management of fixed, vehicle or body worn video surveillance cameras. The flexibility of a tiered architecture means data can be accessed directly and quickly regardless of the combination of tiers or media it is stored on: Primary disk tailored for highest performance typically for the most recent, regularly accessed data. Secondary disk predominantly designed for higher capacity. File based tape linear tape-open (LTO) with a file system no different to disk but on lower-cost tape with slightly lower performance. Cloud storage used for offsite storage, replication or archive managed in the same file system. Enabling longer retention times while ensuring all data is accessible ensures safety and security investigations can be easily be carried out and vital evidence is protected. Longer retention provides indemnification for organisations but other returns on investment (ROI) can be sought through video analytics. IHS estimates the global revenues from licensing video content analysis algorithms for security and business intelligence applications will be approximately $150 million in In a video surveillance system the availability of all recorded video, regardless of age, provides a greater potential useable dataset, either from the onset or for future use. Video used for business intelligence analytics providing operational logistics or marketing insight can demonstrate efficiencies and cost savings for businesses. In many cases the data has already been captured, yet, in the underlying data storage the lack of a connected, accessible, scalable single file system coupled with longer term retention can limit the scope for video analytics powered return on investment. Intelligent tiered storage alleviates this issue. For video surveillance operators, security professionals and law enforcement officers the on-going administrative assistance required from IT departments for video surveillance data management is a real pain point. An intelligent tiered storage approach can remove some of the additional complexities and costs of this admin. IT intervention to respond to users requests to search, recall, re-build and present data is greatly reduced through a single, accessible file system. This means primarily security operators, not the IT department, play a more active role in accessing data regardless of how long or where it is stored. Intelligent, scalable tiered storage has been pioneered in deployments storing large volumes of high resolution video data by the media and entertainment industry for years. With the increasing retention requirements and increasing surveillance video quality this approach is well suited to video surveillance whilst providing additional benefits. Evaluating storage as an integral part of a surveillance system allows an effective balance between performance, maximum retention and potential ROI.
