This specialty of our profession goes far beyond clinics and psychiatric hospitals for criminal defendants being evaluated and treated on issues of competency and responsibility. A broader definition includes social work practice which any way is related to legal issues and litigation, both criminal and civil. This helps explore how a social worker fits in the legal sector. Room 3 Tiffany Welch, LSW, Assistant Director of Social Work/ Director of Field Education at Mansfield University with Devon Macon, Student, Mansfield University & Joelsen Rsimo, BSW Student, Mansfield University (PAUSWE) Mental Health Awareness on College Campuses Because mental illness affects most areas of social work practice, it is essential that social workers be aware of issues with service delivery. Through completion of an action research inquiry that gathered data on faculty, staff, and students perceptions of mental health services, results found marketing and education are needed to promote awareness of mental health services on campus. Stakeholders formed a task force to share results and recommendations for action. Room 4 Mary Daly, LMSW, Interim BSW Program Director, Mansfield University (PAUSWE) The Community as Classroom Service in the community is a powerful learning experience. 10 Room 4 Margaret Smith, PhD, ACSW, LSW, MPH, Assistant Professor, Edinboro University (PAUSWE) Promoting Academic Success- Youth in Foster Care Youth in foster care are more likely than their non-foster care counterparts to drop out of school, repeat a grade, be suspended or expelled. Negative life outcomes for former foster youth when compared to the general population include: adult homeless, increased rates of unemployment, mental illness, and involvement in the criminal justice system. Negative life outcomes can be ameliorated when youth in foster care are supported to graduate from high school and encouraged to attend post-secondary education. This work shop explores the role of a Social Work Department in creating a university and child welfare collaborative to develop an academic enrichment and remediation program to address the educational disparities that may arise with high school students in foster care and out of home placement. Promotion of academic skills for youth in foster care and in out of home placement at a university in combination with exposure to prosocial student behaviors are likely to increase the acquisition of educational and social skills which can lead to higher graduate rates. Room 5 Steven Granich, DSW, LCSW, LMFT, Assistant Professor of Social Work, Lock Haven University (PAUSWE) Social Work with Latino Immigrants (PAUSWE Student Session) There are an increasing number of Latino immigrants from Mexico and Central America in Pennsylvania. Social workers need to understand this population and demonstrate cultural competence with this group. Through using a PowerPoint presentation, reviewing models of practice, and showing cultural objects, participants will understand the lives and struggles of Latino immigrants in Pennsylvania. Topics covered will include: religion, poverty, indigenous culture, violence, child labor, and women s issues. Participants will be able to understand the difficult process of immigration to the United States and status of immigrants in the United States and Pennsylvania. 12:00 PM PAUSWE Board of Directors Business Meeting (Separate lunch, location to be announced) 12:00 PM Networking Lunch 12:45 3:15 PM Keynote Address (2.5 CEs) Margaret Christopher, PhD, MPH, LCSW, ACSW, Associate Professor and former Social Work Chair, California State University of Pennsylvania with Rosalie Smiley, PhD, LMSW, MPH, Professor of Social Work, California University of Pennsylvania, Thao Pham, PhD, MSW Assistant Professor of Social Work, University of California of Pennsylvania, and Mary Ann Salotti, PhD, Professor/Licensed Psychologist, California University of Pennsylvania (Social justice/macro) Update on Human Trafficking Social workers come into contact with human trafficking victims and survivors on a daily basis, but have no idea who they are. This is because victims and survivors rarely self-identify because of stigma, confusion and/or fear of prosecution. The kind of multidisciplinary help that they need, however, is unique and especially challenging because one wrong move could cost their life and put others in danger, including the social workers. As the epidemic of human trafficking continues to grow, and Pennsylvania becomes a recruitment and destination state, as opposed to being a pass through state, we need to learn to identify victims and survivors and how to work effectively with other professionals in rescuing and rehabilitating them. 3:30 5:00 PM (1.5 CEs) Room 1 Kevin Masturzo, LCSW, HSV, Founder/Clinical Director TSW Consulting (clinical) Creative or Crazy: Being Comfortable with Thinking Outside of the Box Social Workers, as clients, are individuals with their own unique set of characteristics. Sometimes this seems forgotten as we utilize the models and approaches we have been taught and trained. The ability to mold techniques, create interventions, and personalize engagement promotes strong alliances and contributes to achieving positive outcomes. We will explore the use of self, adding personality to practice, becoming comfortable stepping Outside of the Box, and being creative in practice. Aspects of the therapeutic relationship that foster openness and cooperation and those that sabotage our own efforts will be identified. Room 2 Marita Flagler, PhD, MSW, Assistant Professor, Shippensburg University. (ethics) A Human Rights Perspective for Social Work Ethics The goal of the session is to enrich the participants perspective as they deal with ethical dilemmas in their micro, mezzo, or macro practice. The workshop will consist of two parts. In the first part, the participants will be introduced to the major human rights documents and explore the connections of our profession to the human rights values. In the second part, participants will examine potential ethical dilemmas and learn how a human rights perspective can apply to those situations. Room 3 Hillary Laskey, LCSW-c, Assistant Director of Quality Assurance, St. Mary s County Department of Social Work, California, MD (direct practice) Marginalized Families Many families and individuals who come to the attention of social workers are living in the margins. It is important to understand the influences of living at, or near, poverty on the growth and development of all family members. Important too is the knowledge of the limitations for forward movement without attending to the basic needs of these families. It is important to advocate for these families with other collaterals who may not understand the challenges of marginalization.

11 Room 4 Stuart Horowitz, MSW, LCSW,ACSW,QCSW, Psychotherapist, St. Luke s Hospital, and Susan McDonald, PhD, LSW, Social Work Field Coordinator, Misericordia University, Certified Trauma Informed Yoga Instructor(Direct practice) Mindfulness, Meditation and Yoga Social Workers can be engaged with helping our clients cope with stressors in their lives as well as learning to cope with our own stressors. It is important for Social Workers to teach our clients and ourselves how to cope and live better lives. To this end the workshop will focus on stress reduction techniques, meditation and yoga as tools for relaxation. Participants should wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. 7:00 10:00 PM Movie and discussion (3 CEs) Waiting for Superman (1 hr 51 min) Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education statistics have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. As he follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive review of public education, surveying drop-out factories and academic sinkholes, methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems. The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors has designated NASW-PA a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education programs for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors. Please keep these key points in mind as you earn your continuing education credits at the 2015 NASW-PA Annual Conference: Attendees must complete a minimum of two hours of either a keynote session or a workshop to obtain a valid continuing education credit certificate. The 2015 NASW-PA Annual Conference offers the 30 credits necessary to cover the licensure cycle. 8 of the continuing education credits can be obtained by attending the Thursday focus tracks. NASW-PA is not offering Act 31/Child Abuse credits at this conference. If you decide to leave a keynote session or workshop early, that session cannot be counted towards your total number of continuing education credits earned. You must complete an evaluation for each keynote session or workshop you attend. The written evaluation is required for registration staff to print the continuing education certificate. Attendees have two options to receive their continuing education certificates. The certificates can be printed on-site as the attendee is finishing the conference. To avoid lines NASW-PA can also mail certificates after we receive the completed session evaluations from each attendee. As of 2007, all licensed professionals must obtain at least 3 CE in Ethics. All approved ethics workshops are noted by the word ethics following the workshop s name in the brochure. As you continue studying for the licensure exam, consider participating in a licensure preparatory class. Licensure preparatory classes are designed for individuals who wish to review items that are frequently seen on the licensure exam. This is not a course that will rehash your entire MSW program; rather, it will help refresh and clarify what you have learned in school and the field. Instructors generally cover what to expect on the day of the examination, how to take a computerized exam, how much time is needed for each question, and various testtaking strategies. Our instructors are all licensed and knowledgeable of the examination process. Please visit our Calendar of Events on NASW-PA s website, to view upcoming course dates and locations. You may register online or call to sign up today!
