3 1) Propane Trucks Can Save You Money The price of petroleum-based fuel options remains elevated and volatile, and the long-term outlook is that prices will continue to rise. With America's options to increase domestic petroleum supply limited, the total amount of imported petroleum will either continue to rise, or we will have to look for alternative fuel options for our vehicles. What is this "miracle" fuel? Propane! Gallon for gallon, prices for propane have consistently been lower than those of gasoline, primarily due to the way propane is refined. Propane occurs naturally during the domestic oil refining and natural gas processing, supplying about 90 percent of U.S. propane requirements. Because propane is derived from both crude oil and natural gas, its price tracks the rise and fall of gasoline prices, but on the average stays well below the price per gallon. According to published government data, the price of propane per gallon, excluding taxes, averages about 78 percent of the price of gasoline. 4 2) Propane Can Help Save the Environment Growing concerns about climate change and the environmental impact of conventional, petroleum-based fuels are encouraging the development and use of technologies and energy sources that can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Propane is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as a clean alternative fuel, and it also performs better than many other fuels with respect to GHG emissions. Propane's on-site emissions have lower carbon content than gasoline, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and ethanol. Even when upstream emissions those released as a result of extracting and processing energy are factored into the equation, propane is still one of the best fuel options from a GHG perspective. Additionally, propane does not have the contaminants of some other fuels like diesel, and has less criteria pollutants (which are indicators of air quality) across many applications. Propane's portability, storability, and environmental benefits also qualify it to serve the unique needs of several applications. On average, propane fleet vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent*; create 20 percent less nitrous oxide; up to 60 percent less carbon monoxide; and fewer particulate emissions, compared to conventional gasoline**. Propane itself is not a direct greenhouse gas when released into the air, according to measurements reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. And unlike fuels such as natural gas, propane vapor is removed from the atmosphere faster than it takes for it to become well-mixed and impact the global climate. When Propane is used as a fuel, it does generate small amounts of GHG emissions. However, as PERC's study demonstrates, propane's carbon footprint is lower than many other fuels.
