3 Page 3 of What is a VPN? VPN is a virtual private network connection that lets any student, faculty, or staff member, access campus resources from any remote computer that has an Internet connection, once the appropriate client software has been installed. A VPN connection creates an encrypted secure tunnel from the client to the VPN concentrator installed at the edge of the campus network. These secure tunnels allow the user to check e mail, pass data files back and forth, and perform other transactions as if they were actually on the campus without the fear of the data being exploited while traveling over the Internet Getting Started In order to start using the UT Arlington VPN service, you will need the following: 1. An active UTA NetID account 2. An active, off campus Internet connection 3. Cisco VPN Client software ( 4. A 32 bit operating system Windows XP/NT/2000/Vista Macintosh OSX 10.0 or higher Linux Red Hat Version 6.2 or later Solaris UltraSparc kernel OS Version 2.6 or later

4 Page 4 of Obtaining the VPN client In order to use the VPN service, you must have the VPN client installed on your home computer. You can obtain the VPN client by visiting the 1. Download the VPN setup files. UTA VPN Profile: UTA.pcf Right click and "Save Target As..." Save file to your desktop, My Documents, or any where you can locate. VPN Install Files Note: The download file for Vista OS is provided for your convenience only. OIT does not provide any support for Vista OS, only documentation and instructions. 2. You will be prompted to enter your NetID and password. 3. Click Unzip whenever prompted. If a DOS box appears, DO NOT close this out as the software is nstalling the necessary VPN adapter. 4. Click on Finish. 5. Select Yes to restart your machine.

5 Page 5 of Connecting to the VPN 1. When your computer finishes rebooting, click Start, select All Programs, choose Cisco Systems VPN Client and then finally select VPN Client. 2. Click on Import and import the UTA.PCF file from the location you saved it in the first step. 3. UTA VPN should appear under Connection Entry list.

6 Page 6 of 9 NOTE: If there is no entry listed for UTA in the VPN program, you must manually configure the connection using thesee instructions: ***Manual VPN Settings*** Click New and enter the following information in the required fields: Connection Entry: UTA Description: UTA Host: vpn.uta.edu Select Group Authenticatio on and enter: Name: default Password: UTAsecret Confirm Password: UTAsecret 4. Select the UTA entry from the Connection Entry list and then click Connect. 5. When prompted to, enter your NetID and current password and click OK. 6. After successful negotiationn with the VPN server you should be greeted with a Banner message. Click Continue to do just that.

7 Page 7 of Importantt Installation Notes Notice the yellow padlock icon in the lower right hand corner in your system tray. The padlock should be closed indicating that you are connected. This is also how you can disconnect from the VPN connection. You will notice that under Network Connections you now have an additional adapter the LAN adapter for the Cisco Systems VPN Adapter. Do NOT remove this Disconnecting from the VPN 1. Right click on the yellow padlock icon in your system tray and select Disconnect. 2. When disconnected, the yellow padlock should be unlocked as pictured below:

8 Page 8 of Remote Desktop Connectionn Work Steps 1. Find your Full Computer Name a. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. b. Click the Computer Name tab. c. Write down the Full Computer Name (you ll need this later) 2. Check to make sure remotee access is enabled. a. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. b. Click the Remote tab. c. Check the box next to Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. d. Click OK. If this option is grayed out and unchecked, contact your dept IT administrator as you must be granted Administrator access to your computer to enable this feature.

9 Page 9 of 9 3. Lock your computer or log off before leaving work. (Your computer must be powered on and connected to the network for you to access it remotely.) Home Steps 4. Connect to the VPN client. 5. Click Start. 6. Click Run. 7. Type mstsc in the Open field. 8. Click OK. The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box appears. 9. Type the Full Computer Name of your work computer in the Computer field. 10. Click Connect. 11. Login to your work computer. Congratulations. You should now seee a login box for your work computer. Enter your NetID and password to login!!!!
