2 Leader Prep: Read and reflect on this week s Scripture. Sometimes the loudness of the world gets in the way of hearing God speak to us. God speaks to us. God calls us while were in the waiting room. Ask yourself if you are listening for God in your life? The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and tells her she will conceive and bear a child. Mary not only listens but has a conversation with God. She asks the angel how can this be and wants to know more. Ultimately Mary prayed and gives a full hearted response to God saying Let it be done to me according to Thy Word. Mary ultimately puts her own wishes for her life aside and yields to God responding to God s call with praise and thanksgiving. What are you hearing from God? What is your response? INTRODUCTION: Telephone Game Have the children sit in a line side-by-side. Start the game by whispering a message in the first child's ear. Use today s memory verses as the messages. Tell each child to pass along the message that you recited, and see if they will keep the message intact all the way down the line. It may be easier for the children if you divide them into two groups for a big class. Today s memory verses: Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you. Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. Luke 1:37 God can do anything SNACK OPTIONS: Purchase an angel food cake from your local grocery store or prepare an angel food cake using box directions. Add fresh strawberries, blueberries, or other fruit with whipped topping for a special treat. Or prepare the recipe below Angel Kisses Ingredients: 1 Angel Food cake mix 1/2 c. strawberry flavored carbonated beverage 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups shredded coconut Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil. In a large bowl, mix the cake, beverage, and extract. Beat with mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Fold in coconut. Drop by teaspoon onto foil 2 inches apart. Bake for 10 minutes or until light brown.

3 Variation: You can drizzle these with chocolate, if desired. PRAYER: (Break down the prayer into parts. The kids repeat each phrase after you) Dear Jesus, We celebrate your birth and remember how special you are. Teach us there is a blessing waiting for us who learn to believe and not doubt. May we respond to God as Mary did with complete trust and an open heart. Love, Your blessed children LESSON: The birth of the Lord Jesus came about in a miraculous way. Our story begins with an angel in Nazareth speaking with a simple, pure young woman named Mary. Sources tell us that Mary is pledged to be married to Joseph, who is a relative of David. Greetings, you who are highly favored The Lord is with you, the angel Gabriel said to Mary. Mary seemed afraid. She did not know why an angel was speaking to her. Do not be afraid. You have found favor with God. You will have a son. You are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and be called the Son of the Most High. His kingdom will never end, said the angel. How can this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am still a virgin? The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the Holy one to be born will be called the Son of God, said Gabriel. Even your relative Elizabeth is going to have a baby. Nothing is impossible with God. Then the angel Gabriel left her. Who remembers the telephone game? Remember the telephone game teaches us we have to listen to God and follow our hearts as Mary did even among all the outside noises and distractions. By listening and obeying we also say Yes to God ACTIVITIES: Review Game" Divide the class into teams and when the answer is correct the team gets a turn to toss the bean bag on the ornaments. Add up points and the team with the most points recites the Memory Verse- Luke 1:32 He will be and will be called the son on the Most High together. Questions: Who came to visit Mary? (an angel ) Was Mary scared? (yes) What was the name of the angel who visited Mary? (Gabriel) What did the angel tell Mary? (She would bear a son by the Holy Spirit ) What are some things Gabriel said about Jesus? (He will be great and be called the Son of the Most High. His kingdom will never end) How do you think Mary felt about giving birth to the Son of God? Even though she was scared what did she say to God? ( I am the Lord s servant, Mary said. May it be to me as you have said. ) What would you do if an angel came to visit you? Would you be afraid? Shy? Friendly?

4 What question would you want to ask an angel? Do you think you would obey if an angel asked you to do something? Introduce the rebus reading format by reading Christmas is For Me by Christine Tangvald or sharing poems from Rebus Riot by Bonnie Christensen. Together help the the kids retell the story of Gabriel visiting Mary in a rebus format on a large sheet of paper. An Angel Visits Mary Craft" 1. Copy an angel pattern for each student on recommended 67 lb. card stock. 2. Have students cut out the angel pattern. 3. Decorate the angels with markers, glitter, and cotton (angel hair) 4. Bend and glue the base of the body (see diagram) 5. Punch a hole in the top and attach a string.
