2 Welcome to Lyng Hall Thank you for your interest in Lyng Hall Specialist Sports College. We are a relatively small school, which makes it possible for all staff to know the pupils. This is important in enabling us to create a caring and supportive environment for our pupils. Everyone is committed to ensuring that the pupils achieve the highest possible standards. We adapt and personalise the delivery of the curriculum and staff are actively encouraged to develop creative and motivational techniques for teaching the pupils. Our recent successful improvements have been featured in the local press, radio and on the television. Lyng Hall is an exciting school that is flourishing. Our designation as a specialist Sports College signalled the start of a period of rapid growth and exciting developments, including a 2.5 million pound school and community sports facility. The school has many strengths and an Ofsted inspection in February 2006 endorsed the strategies that have been put in place. I was particularly pleased that the inspection team identified that: Pupils enjoy school. Their well being, especially that of the most vulnerable, is well catered for. Pupils personal development is good and they value the provision that is made for them. At Key Stage 3, results have improved faster than the national rate, Welcome especially in English. Pupils have a positive attitude to school. Pupils are confident that any unacceptable behaviour is dealt with quickly and effectively. The Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team provide good leadership and have a clear vision for improvement. Year on year results are improving and pupils are given a wider range of opportunities and experiences to enrich the quality of their lives, help them to achieve their potential and develop within them the attitudes necessary to become a compassionate and successful member of the adult world. I hope this brochure gives you a flavour of what we do at Lyng Hall and the things we care about. I look forward to meeting you. Paul Green, Headteacher "SUCCESS IS WHAT WE CARE ABOUT. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT." "THE HEADTEACHER AND SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM PROVIDE GOOD LEADERSHIP AND HAVE A CLEAR VISION FOR IMPROVEMENT. OFSTED FEBRUARY 2006 "MY TEACHER IS DEVOTED TO OUR LEARNING, SHE HAS GIVEN UP HER OWN TIME TO MAKE SURE WE DO WELL." Y11 PUPIL

3 Caring for Pupils Good learning takes place when a child is secure and confident at school. All the staff at Lyng Hall are involved in the care of our pupils. We strive to provide a community based on respect and encourage a sense of pride and belonging. Our Aims We offer pupils a wide range of experiences including equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum. Lyng Hall provides a successful, supportive environment and a positive school community in which your child will gain the skills and qualities necessary to: Develop all abilities and talents. Develop self respect and self motivation. Achieve the highest possible standard of education and become life-long learners. Play an active and responsible role in the school and the wider community. Have a sensitive awareness and respect for others irrespective of gender, race, class, religion and disability. Enjoy the challenge of hard work and its successful completion. Aims We believe that a successful school require a partnership between pupils, parents, staff, governors and the wider community. Our Code of Conduct All members of the Lyng Hall community will: Attend regularly and punctually. Be courteous and polite. Act appropriately. Work hard and to the best of their ability. Support each other. Success for all pupils is what we care about. It does not happen by accident. Joining the Year 7 Team In July, the Year 6 pupils visit us for Transfer Day. On this day we provide pupils with an exciting and stimulating experience of life at Lyng Hall. Your child will have opportunities to meet other Year 6 pupils and this is a great chance to meet new friends. Information about each pupil s abilities and interests is collected so that when they join Lyng Hall, we already know how to help them achieve their best. Special care is taken of the pupils joining our school in Year 7. The tutor is the teacher who has a special responsibility for your child. The Tutor Group meets every day so the tutor and the pupils get to know each other very well. The Tutor Groups are organised so that pupils are with other children of similar ability. They are taught for most of their lessons in these groups, ensuring that the work is neither too difficult nor too easy. Head of Year Each team of tutors is led by a Head of Year who will deal with any concerns you may have. The Head of Year also oversees the programme of personal, social, health and careers education. Heads of Year only teach for 50% of the week. The rest of their time is spent working with pupils, staff, parents and other organisations to ensure that each child in their year group has the support and resources necessary to achieve their potential. Individual Support Lyng Hall has many strategies to encourage and enable all students to be successful learners: We assess the literacy and numeracy skills of all our students and use this information to identify those who will benefit from individual or group support programmes. More able children are identified in order that we can support them to reach their potential during their time in the School. We offer a range of programmes to assist and support learning needs. This will vary according to individual needs and could include support during normal curriculum time, small group work, access to specific computer programmes or a specialised curriculum. Drop-in homework clubs at lunchtime and at the end of the day are popular. We have a highly skilled and dynamic team of Teaching Assistants who spend much of their time supporting students in the classroom. A team of Learning Mentors support individuals in difficulty or distress and monitors the achievement of students at risk of not achieving their potential. Our school based youth workers run a variety of programmes and activities designed to develop a wide range of skills and problem-solving strategies. The School also works with a wide range of external agencies according to the individual needs of families and students. Your son and daughter s tutor will: See them every day. Reward them for good work and effort. Monitor their progress in lessons. Check equipment and uniform. Solve any worries they may have. Contact home if necessary. Encourage participation in school clubs. Support the learning of key skills. Deliver personal, social and health education. Read and sign their learning diaries. Be a point of contact for parents. "It s good at Lyng Hall, you use instruments that you never used before in Music. We took part in Oliver when we arrived; I was in the market in the play. You learn new things and make new friends." Y7 pupil "PUPILS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL KNOW HOW TO KEEP THEMSELVES SAFE AND HEALTHY AND THEY HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT CONSTITUTES A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE." OFSTED FEBRUARY 2006

4 Achieving Achieving Excellence A Personalised Curriculum To ensure that young people excel we must tailor the curriculum to suit their individual strengths and interests; one size and style does not suit all! In years 7 and 8 pupils are grouped by ability. We provide support in numeracy and literacy for pupils who need it. We provide extension opportunities for able pupils or pupils who are talented in a given direction. (For example, this year pupils worked with the BBC to produce a TV programme.) We use a wide range of exciting and relevant teaching strategies that cross the usual subject boundaries and make extensive use of our excellent ICT facilities. The chart shows the number of lessons devoted to each subject every week in Key Stage 3. Lessons are one hour long. English Maths Science DT/ICT PE French History Geography Art RE Music Drama Year Year Year At Key Stage 4 pupils study a wide range of subjects. All pupils will take GCSEs in: English, Maths, Science and RE. All students will do at least 2 hours of PE each week. All pupils will take a Vocational Qualification equivalent to 2 GCSEs. Pupils will study other subjects based on discussions and guidance from their teachers. Some pupils will have the opportunity to attend College on a part or full time basis to study a wide range of courses such as Hair and Beauty, Public Service, Construction, Engineering, Performing Arts. All pupils receive specialist advice and guidance from a Connexions Advisors, who are based at the school. "I REALLY LIKE PE BECAUSE I HAVE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT ROUNDERS, JAVELIN TEACHERS LEAD YOU ON SO YOU GET BETTER." Y8 PUPIL Excellence Excellence through Sport We have new, state of the art facilities for PE and sport, including: Gymnasium. Dance area. Athletics track. Swimming pool. Teaching rooms. Coaching suites. Fitness area. All supported by the latest wireless ICT technology. In Year 7 to Year 9: The students have the opportunity to experience and learn many different sports and skills, through a variety of teaching methods and styles. The students have access to 2 hours per week of high quality PE. In Year 9 pupils will study a BTEC in Sport, which is worth 2 GCSEs. At Key Stage 4: The students participate in core PE for 2 hours per week. Pupils access a variety of other courses where they gain different qualifications, including: o GCSE PE o GCSE Dance o BTEC Introduction to Sport o Junior Sports Leader Award o Community Sports Leader Award Work in PE and Sport increases pupils confidence and motivation. It develops their ability to work with others. This has a really positive effect in their other lessons as well. Pupils have the opportunity to coach and instruct others, including students in our local Primary Schools. In the Sixth Form, pupils can study AS and A2 PE and follow more advanced BTEC courses, which will give access to University courses in PE and Sport. We run many competitive teams and non-competitive clubs. We access local festivals and competitions to enable our students to perform at many different levels. As a Sports College, we have access to a wide range of coaches from national sporting bodies that spend a significant amount of time at the school, developing the skills of our pupils. Lyng Hall is at the hub of a national initiative to develop sporting excellence in all schools. We co-ordinate a sports development programme which operates in 8 other secondary schools and 40 primary schools across the City. A wide range of strategies are used to mentor, support, encourage, monitor, assess and evaluate the progress of individual pupils and to guarantee that every possible action has been taken to ensure that your child achieves their full potential. "MY MENTOR HAS PUSHED ME TO GET 5 A* - C GRADES." Y11 PUPIL

6 Able and More Able and Talented Children At Lyng Hall we celebrate achievement and success in all areas of school life: pupils who have leadership or organisational skills are as valued as those with higher academic ability. We recognise that all pupils are individuals with their own special needs and requirements. We recognise that more able pupils need to be identified, targeted, supported and challenged. Within a framework of equal opportunity, more able pupils are entitled to have their needs recognised and addressed. We believe that making appropriate provision for able and talented pupils is an opportunity, not a problem, and we welcome the challenge involved in supporting able and talented pupils in our school to reach their full potential. We recognise that talent can be wasted without appropriate knowledge and skills to direct it. Ability may go unrecognised in the absence of a programme specifically designed to identify it. Also, without appropriate provision, and recognition of their efforts, able pupils may be discouraged. Opportunities for Able, Gifted and Talented pupils: Links with Creative partnership to provide an enriched curriculum. This involves access to artists and resources. A designated co-ordinator for each subject, ensuring a number of enrichment activities occur for identified pupils during the year. Opportunities to visit and work in conjunction with universities, such as Warwick, Coventry, Oxford. Membership to the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY) Involvement in specially organised events such as Women s Day, Challenge Events and a Celebration Event. Monitoring of progress, a record of special interests and activities to suit your gifted and talented needs. "BY THE TIME THEY ARE IN THE SIXTH FORM, MANY MAKE GOOD USE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE SCHOOL AND TO THE WIDER COMMUNITY." OFSTED FEBRUARY 2006 Lyng Hall in the community We work with our local community and offer an ever-expanding range of evening and weekend activities. All of our facilities offer full access for disabled users. There are a number of clubs working with us, providing expert tuition and coaching in the following areas: Coventry City Swimming Club (who offer an extensive learn to swim programme and other water based activities). Athletics. Tennis (We are a hub school for the L.T.A.). Table Tennis. Football. Martial Arts. An extensive programme of term time and holiday activities is planned for all ages and abilities.
