2 An outstanding opportunity has arisen to lead one of the most successful international schools in the United States of America. Established in 2006 in state of the art facilities overlooking the East River near the United Nations in Manhattan, BISNY provides a world-class education within a friendly, caring and inspiring academic atmosphere. With students coming from a mix of families from around the globe the teaching at BISNY draws from the best of the English National Curriculum and International Baccalaureate while nurturing individual talents in music, fine arts, drama, languages and sport. is housed in one of the most impressive school facilities in New York City. The school building has large classrooms, filled with natural light and river views. It is fortunate to have a quiet and safe cul-de-sac for student drop off, and parking available for parents who wish to bring their children to school or attend events. BISNY has sister schools Abercorn School in London ( and Abercorn International School in Texas ( Conveniently located in Waterside Plaza, The British International School has access to a full-size gymnasium, two swimming pools and three playgrounds. The school s distinctive curriculum combines the best of British education with the teaching methodology of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The in-depth, fast-paced, traditional disciplines of the English National Curriculum are taught through the dynamic, inquiry-based, interdisciplinary teaching approach of the IBPYP / MYP. The education provided by the school is portable, preparing children for further schooling within the US or anywhere in the world. This unique curriculum creates a well grounded, dynamic learning environment. Pupils taught in this manner become confident, independent learners. The Appointment The Board wish to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Head with strategic vision who can lead parents, children and staff through further major developments and continue to raise the profile the school and see BISNY achieving at the highest levels. 3 The successful candidate will: Be a dynamic and inspirational leader Possess high quality and proven experience of school leadership gained either in the UK or internationally and set alongside a keen and knowledgeable awareness of general educational issues Hold a mature and incisive grasp of management issues - understanding the importance of change management, blended with the capacity to communicate succinctly Show flair for marketing and promotion, with the capacity to extend traditional markets and reach out to new ones Be analytical, capable of independent research, experienced and adept in IT applications Have highly developed interpersonal skills and team player qualities; genuinely sensitive to the ideas and needs of others Be committed to thinking strategically and planning systematically Remain sensitive to the values that should pervade BISNY in a manner that expresses total integrity and probity Role and responsibility: The Head of is accountable to the Board for the successful conduct of the school s affairs. The person appointed will be expected to lead, manage and develop all aspects of the school s life efficiently, effectively and successfully At all times, the Head s actions and pronouncements must be compliant with current legislation, the policies and guidelines set out by the Board of Directors, with whom the Head will have regular communication page 3

Strategic Leadership and Reputation Giving strategic direction, formulating the overall aims and objectives of the school, proposing policies for their implementation, and providing leadership to facilitate the changes that result The testing and admission of pupils who will thrive within BISNY s environment bringing credit to themselves and the School; and advising on and planning for pupils future schooling Understanding and delivering performance management and adherence to the budget to develop the school s financial strength Communicating BISNY s ethos with enthusiasm, promoting the school s image and spearheading the recruitment of pupils; developing links with all the schools that BISNY feeds Securing at all times the school s good name and reputation, participating appropriately in the affairs of local educational and business networks Reporting fully and frankly to the Board of Directors, and accepting regular appraisal and reasonable performance management review 2. Educational provision and quality Ensuring the physical, mental and moral welfare of all pupils and maintaining good discipline Directing and managing the education, both curricular and extra-curricular, provided by the school; ensuring that the highest standards of teaching and learning are delivered and that performance is kept under review Providing a high quality rounded education for all pupils focused on academic achievement - ensuring that all staff have high expectations of pupils, both in their learning and behaviour, and creating an environment in which all pupils can fulfil their potential both inside and outside the classroom Establishing and managing the curriculum so that it is aligned with the best and developing educational practice, and to ensure its effective delivery by the teaching staff whilst maintaining and developing the school s extended curriculum and extra-curricular programme Insisting on the highest quality of teaching and learning, ensuring that these are continually monitored and geared to adding value Leading, encouraging and supporting innovation in teaching and learning with a particular focus on the effective use of ICT Ensuring that the school is effectively prepared for inspections Taking part in teaching and other activities as appropriate Instilling purpose and discipline among pupils constructively and fairly 3. Management Developing the management structure of the school so that vision and strategy are shared, development is planned, targets are set and results are evaluated Appointing, supporting and nurturing the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), regarding them as a prime resource for BISNY s future development. The SLT consists of the Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Head, IB Coordinator and Key Stage Heads. Appointing and promoting the best possible staff, in conjunction with legal requirements and Board s procedures and guidelines; deploying staff, maintaining staff performance and professional development through carefully designed and applied systems of appraisal Arranging proper programmes of staff induction and procedures for Newly Qualified Teachers Maintaining at all times, staff discipline and professional standards; ensuring compliance with all legal requirements and regulations page 4

Communication Managing at all times effective and positive communication with pupils, staff, parents, prospective parents, Board of Directors and the wider community Ensuring that the appearance of the school is always welcoming and that pupils and parents needs and concerns are always given high priority Marketing the school actively to potential parents to maximise pupil numbers Cultivating excellent PR to celebrate the school s achievements, extend the range of its publicity, develop relationships with other schools and achieve the best possible partnership with the wider community Dealing effectively and positively with any complaints with the overall aims of quality assurance and parental satisfaction These job details are guides to the duties, professional responsibilities and core competences.
