1 English School In Rome

2 English School in Rome General Information Key Stage 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 (7 years old) (8 years old) (9 years old) (10 years old) English School in Rome follows the National Curriculum of England, which is rich, varied and exciting. Excellent teaching, where children are challenged and engaged, is the key to our success. As well as stimulating children we show them what they can do. By guiding them in this way we ensure that each child develops a love of learning. By combining excellence in teaching with the enjoyment of learning we have developed the distinctive character of the school. The classes are organised in the following way. EDUCATION - Foundation Stage Nursery Reception (3 years old) (4 years old) This Early Years department has been created to provide a stimulating educational environment for our youngest children. We provide the first step from home to school with a calm, loving atmosphere and a well-trained staff. The Foundation Stage comprises the Nursery and the Reception classes. Children may join the Nursery class at the beginning of the academic year (September) as long as they have had their third st birthday on or before 31 August. Progression into the Reception class takes place in September following the child s fourth birthday. The Foundation Stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning: - personal, social and emotional development; - communication, language and literacy; - problem solving, reasoning and numeracy; - knowledge and understanding of the world; - physical development; - creative development. Well-planned play, both indoors and outdoors, is a key way in which the children in the Foundation Stage learn. Many opportunities are created to allow this learning to take place. Appropriately qualified, talented staff, a wide range of resources and a secure environment all contribute to a wonderful experience for your child. Key Stage 1 Year 1 Year 2 (5 years old) (6 years old) Key Stage 1 comprises Years 1 and 2. The school uses the nationally recognised schemes of work produced by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority that match the requirements of the National Curriculum as a curriculum map. The Primary Framework for Literacy and Numeracy is incorporated into the teachers planning. Lessons are conducted in a purposeful working atmosphere. They provide good opportunities for the pupils to increase their knowledge and understanding, practise new skills and work both collaboratively and independently. Although the curriculum becomes more formal in Key Stage 1, structured play is still seen as an important aspect of the children s development. Attractive classroom displays provide information to help learning and celebrate pupils achievements. Specialist teachers teach Music and PE. At the end of Year 2 the teachers assess the level of the children using national criteria. Teachers are able to use tests in English and Mathematics to support their judgement. Key Stage 2 is comprised of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Children are taught in a supportive learning environment by well-qualified, conscientious and hard working teachers. Children are given the opportunity to explain their ideas and be involved in activities. There are two computer rooms, which ensure that the children are at the cutting edge of modern technology. Pupils are expected to behave responsibly and to work hard. The school aims to develop pupils self-esteem and self-confidence. At the end of Year 6 the children take end of Key Stage 2 national tests (SATs) in English, Mathematics and Science, which are marked externally. Our test results are excellent, being comfortably superior to UK national results and on a par with the best independent schools. Italian children can prepare for their Italian Primary School Diploma exams (5 Elementare), if required. Key Stage 3 Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 (11 years old) (12 years old) (13 years old) Years 7, 8 and 9 are taught completely by specialist subject teachers. These first years of secondary school are extremely important. The children are given even greater opportunity to demonstrate their independence and maturity. Staying at creates a smooth passage from the primary phase to the secondary one ensuring continuity and progress are maintained. At the end of Year 9 the children take end of Key Stage 3 SATs in English, Mathematics and Science, which are marked externally. By this stage our pupils have pulled even further ahead of their UK counterparts. The children are also given the opportunity to take GCSE examinations in French and Italian (where appropriate). Italian children can take the Italian Middle School Diploma exams (3 Media) in either Year 8 or Year 9 as appropriate. Additional Support Trained staff to teach Literacy and Numeracy support lessons and English as an Additional Language are also on hand should they be required by any pupil. Modern Languages International children begin to learn Italian in Year 1 and all children start French in Year 5. Extra Curricular Activities As an integral and enriching part of the school programme, children are taken on educational visits throughout the school year and from Year 6 upwards a residential trip that takes place in the latter part of the academic year. Extra curricular activities such as football clubs, dance classes, homework club and music lessons are organised on the school premises after normal school hours. Swimming, tennis and dance lessons are held after school in a local sports centre and organises buses to take the students there and home if necessary. The School Day and Calendar The school day starts at 8.50 a.m. and finishes at 3.25 p.m. although an extended day can be arranged if required. The School year runs from the beginning of September to the end of June and is divided into three terms. The Autumn and Spring Terms have a week long half-term holiday.

3 Summer School At the end of the Summer Term, an optional Summer School programme is offered during the month of July. Uniform The School has a uniform policy that pupils are requested to comply with at all times. Parents are requested to support the school policy by ensuring that the correct school uniform is provided and always worn by their sons and daughters. It is extremely helpful if all items of clothing and equipment brought to school are clearly named. Praise and Discipline has a Praise and Discipline policy. And Finally English School in Rome regards the education of each child as a partnership between home and school. Good communication of a two-way nature is extremely important. We provide a weekly newsletter and two written reports of pupils progress and attainment are issued each year in addition to two consultation evenings. Parents are invited to make contact with the school at any time to pass on relevant information regarding their child s health and well-being and also if they have any concerns about their child at school. At it is the norm to want to learn. Praise is an integral part of our policy. At the same time, children quickly recognise the parameters of expected behaviour and acquire an admirable work ethic. Last, though not least, we are keen to ensure that school is an enjoyable experience and always provide plenty of opportunities for fun. First Aid There is a qualified nurse on the premises throughout the school day and a paediatrician comes into school once a week. Children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, 4 and 7 undergo a yearly medical examination. We also offer a listening centre once a week with a psychologist where parents can drop in to discuss family matters. ADMISSIONS New pupils may be welcomed to at any time during the school year. The necessary registration and admission forms must be completed and there is an interview with the Principal. The most recent report, including any test results, from the child s previous school is required. Parents should disclose any concerns they have about their child s educational ability at this stage, particularly if the child has undergone assessment by an educational psychologist, in which case the relevant report should be presented. With older children it may be necessary for them to take an entrance test in English and Mathematics to assess their level of attainment in order that they may be placed appropriately. English School in Rome is certified TUV UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 WE WELCOME VISITORS Please contact us for further details. FACILITIES Current Provision Facilities at English School include a library, computer suites, science laboratory, music room, art and design studio, gymnasium and dining room. All meals are prepared on the premises and there is a wide selection of dishes to choose from daily. All classes from Year 5 are taken to a nearby Sports Centre for their physical education programme that includes a range of activities such as swimming, tennis and gymnastics. The five-acre grounds of the school provide ample play areas, two football pitches, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, and a large car park. Transportation has its own fleet of buses and children are collected directly from home in most areas of southern Rome. Other areas can be served on request. Bus monitors accompany the children on their journey to and from school and all buses have seat belts. Child-seats are also provided.
