Zindagi khwaab hai, khwaab mein jhooth kya Jaagte Raho (1956) Rangi ko naarangi kahein, bane doodh ko khoya; Chalti ko gaadi kahein, dekh Kabira roya. Zindagi khwaab hai, khwaab mein jhooth kya aur bhala sach hai kya; Sab sach hai! Dil ne humse jo kaha hum ne vaisa hi kiya; Phir kabhi fursat se sochenge, bura thha ya bhala Zindagi khwaab hai Ek qatra mai ka jab patthar ke honthon par pada, Uske seene mein bhi dil dhadka, yeh usne bhi kaha Kya? Zindagi khwaab hai Ek pyaali bharke maine gham ke maare dil ko di; Zehar ne maara zehar ko, murde mein phir jaan aa gayi Zindagi khwaab hai They call that which is coloured, a narangi [ colourless / orange ] Milk that has been brought together, khoya [ lost / evaporated milk ] They call that which is mobile a gaadi [ stuck fast / vehicle ] Seeing these paradoxes, Kabir weeps! Life is a dream; in a dream, what is a lie and what, after all, is truth? Everything is truth! What my heart told me, that I did; Later, when I m at leisure, I ll think did I do wrong, or did I do right? Life is a dream When one drop of liquor fell on the lips of a stone, In its bosom too a heart began to beat and this is what it said: What? Life is a dream I filled one cup to the brim and gave it to a heart filled with woe; Poison destroyed poison, and life returned to the corpse Life is a dream
Mere saajan hain us paar (Bandini, 1963) O re maajhi o re maajhi O mere maajhi Mere saajan hain us paar main man-maar hoon is paar, O mere maajhi ab ki baar, le chal paar Mann ki kitaab se tum mera naam hi mitaana dena; Gun toh na thha koi bhi, avgun mere bhula dena; Mujhe aaj ki bida ka marke bhi rehta intezaar Mere saajan hain us paar Mat khel, jal jaayegi kehti hai aag mere mann ki; Main bandini piya ki, main sangini hoon saajan ki; Mera kheenchti hai aanchal manmeet, teri har pukaar Mere saajan hain us paar O boatman, o boatman O my boatman My beloved is on the bank across the river I, broken-hearted, am on this bank O my boatman This time, take me across From the book that is your mind, erase my name completely; I never had any virtues; forget even the flaws I had. I would wait for this parting of ways even after I am long dead. My beloved is on the bank across the river Do not play; you will burn yourself says the fire within my heart; I am the captive of my beloved, the companion of my sweetheart. My love, each cry you utter tugs at me and pulls me back. My beloved is on the bank across the river
Dil ki girah khol do, chup na baitho (Raat aur Din, 1967) Dil ki girah khol do, chup na baitho, koi geet gaao Mehfil mein ab kaun hai ajnabi, tum mere paas aao Milne do ab dil se dil ko, mitne do majbooriyon ko; Sheeshe mein apne dubo do sab faaslon, duriyon ko; Aankhon mein main muskuraoon tumhaari, jo tum muskuraao Mehfil mein ab kaun hai ajnabi Hum tum na hum tum rahe ab, kuchh aur hi ho gaye ab; Sapnon ke jhilmil nagar mein jaane kahaan kho gaye ab; Hum raah poochhein kisi se, na tum apni manzil bataao Mehfil mein ab kaun hai ajnabi Kal humse poochhega koi, Kya ho gaya tha tumhe kal? Mudkar nahin dekhte hum; dil ne kaha hai, Chala chal, Jo door peechhe kahin reh gaye, ab unhe mat bulaao; Mehfil mein ab kaun hai ajnabi Undo the knot of your heart; do not sit silent; Sing a song. Who in this company is now a stranger? Come to me. Let heart meet heart now; Let all that ties us down be destroyed. Drown, in the depths of your glass, All the distances that separate us. I will smile into your eyes, If you too will smile. Who in this company is now a stranger?... You and I no longer remain you and I; We have turned into something else. In this twinkling dwelling-place of dreams, Who knows where we have lost ourselves? Let me not ask anyone for directions; And you, too: do not tell me your destination. Who in this company is now a stranger?... Tomorrow, someone will ask, What happened to you yesterday? We will not look back; The heart has said, Keep on moving. To those who have got left behind, Do not look back and call. Who in this company is now a stranger?...
Na main dhan chaahoon (Kala Bazaar, 1960) Na main dhan chaahoon, na ratan chaahoon, Tere charnon ki dhool mil jaaye, toh main tar jaoon, Shaam tar jaoon Hey Ram tar jaoon Moh-mann mohe lobh lalchaaye, kaise-kaise yeh naag lehraayein. Isse pehle ke dil udhar jaaye, main toh mar jaoon, kyon na mar jaaoon Na main dhan chaahoon Laaye kya thhe, jo leke jaana hai; Nek dil hi tera khazaana hai. Saanjh hote hi panchhi laut aayein. Ab toh ghar jaaoon, apne ghar jaaoon. Tere charnon ki dhool mil jaaye Thham gaya paani, jam gayi kaayi; behti nadiya hi saaf kehlaayi. Mere dil ne hi jaal phailaaye. Ab kidhar jaaoon, main kidhar jaaoon Ab kidhar jaaoon, main kidhar jaaoon I desire neither wealth, nor precious stones; If I should get the dust of your feet, That will be my salvation, Shaam [Krishna] Hey Ram, that will be my salvation. Greed and avarice pull at my heart; What serpents are these, swaying enticingly? Before my heart should be charmed by them, Let me die, why may I not die; I desire neither wealth, nor precious stones What did we bring, that we will take with us; A good heart is the only treasure you value. When dusk falls, the birds head home Now I may go home; I may return to my home. If I should get the dust of your feet Water stagnates, and scum settles on it; Only a river that flows is called clean. My own heart has laid out so many snares for me Where do I go now? Where do I go? Where do I go now? Where do I go?...
Wahaan kaun hai tera, musaafir (Guide, 1965) Wahaan kaun hai tera, musaafir jaayega kahaan? Dum le le ghadi bhar, yeh chhainyaa paayega kahaan? Beet gaye din, pyaar ke pal chhin sapne baneen woh raatein. Kahe kisko tu mera, musaafir, jaayega kahaan?... Kehte hain gyaani, duniya hai faani; paani pe likhi likhaayi. Hai sabki dekhi, hai sabki jaani, haath kisi ke na aayi. Kuchh tera na mera, musaafir, jaayega kahaan?... Who, out there, is for you, traveller? Where will you go? Rest here a while; where will you find this shade? Those days have passed, those moments of love; those nights have now become dreams. They have forgotten; you must forget, too, those lovers meetings. Till far into the distance, there is only darkness, traveller; where will you go? Nobody waits for you; nobody s eyes watch the road for your arrival. Your pain does not make anyone writhe, or fill any eyes with tears. Whom do you call mine, traveller? where will you go?... Those who know, say that this world is ephemeral as froth; writing scripted on water. Everybody has seen it, everybody knows it; yet nobody has been able to grasp it. Nothing here is yours nor mine, traveller; where will you go?...
Hain sabse madhur woh geet jinhe (Patita, 1953) Hain sabse madhur woh geet jinhe hum dard ke sur mein gaate hain. Jab hadh se guzar jaati hai khushi, aansoo bhi chhalakte aate hain Kaanton mein khile hain phool hamaare rang-bhare armaanon ke. Naadaan hain jo in kaanton se daaman ko bachaaye jaate hain. Jab gham ka andhera ghir aaye, samjho ke savera door nahin. Har raat ka hai paigham yehi, taare bhi yehi dohraate hain. Pehloo mein paraaye dard basaake hansna-hansaana seekh zara. Toofaan se keh de ghirke uthe, hum pyaar ke deep jalaate hain. Hain sabse madhur woh geet jinhe The most melodious of songs are the ones we sing to tunes of sorrow. When joy crosses its limit, tears too come splashing forth. The colourful flowers of our hopes blossom in the midst of thorns. Naïve are those who try to save their clothes from catching on these thorns. When the darkness of sorrow surrounds you, think that the morning is now not far. This is the message each night bears; this is what the stars repeat. Take into your being the sorrows of others, learning to laugh and making others laugh. Tell the storm to loom; we light our lamps of love. The most melodious of songs
Mud-mud ke na dekh (Shree 420, 1955) Mud-mud ke na dekh, mud-mud ke Zindagaani ke safar mein tu akela hi nahin hai; hum bhi tere humsafar hain. Aaye-gaye manzilon ke nishaan, lehraake jhooma-jhukaa aasmaan; lekin rukega na yeh kaarvaan. Mud-mud ke na dekh Nainon se naina jo milaake dekhe, mausam ke saath muskuraake dekhe; duniya usi ki hai jo aage dekhe. Mud-mud ke na dekh Duniya ke saath jo badalta jaaye, jo iske saanche mein hi dhalta jaaye; duniya usi ki hai jo chalta jaaye. Mud-mud ke na dekh Do not turn and look back; do not turn. In the journey of life, you are not alone; I too am your companion. Milestones came and went; the sky swirled and danced and lowered; but this caravan will not stop. Do not turn and look back He who looks people in the eye; who smiles with each passing season; he who looks ahead the world is his. Do not turn and look back He who keeps changing with the changing world; who keeps moulding himself to the world; he who keeps moving ahead the world is his. Do not turn and look back
Ae chaand zara chhup jaa (Laat Sahib, 1967) Ae chaand zara chhup jaa, ae waqt zara ruk jaa. Ek baat hai honthon pe; keh loon toh qaraar aaye, ek bojh toh hath jaaye. Ae chaand zara chhup jaa, ae waqt zara ruk jaa. Rukh unka idhar ko hai; ab kyon na bahaar aaye, duniya na badal jaaye. Ae chaand zara chhup jaa Sab khwaab-sa lagta hai, is raat mein jaadoo hai. Khaamosh nazaaron ki har baat mein jaadoo hai. Hum hain ke bandhe-se hain, dil hai ke udaa jaaye. Ek baat hai honthon pe Main pyaar ki baazi mein dil haara toh kya haara. Pehloo mein mere duniya, baahon mein jahaan saara Kya dega muqaddar ab hum maangke pachhtaaye Ek baat hai honthon pe O moon, hide for a bit; o time, stop for a while. An utterance hovers on my lips; if I speak, I will be contented; a load will be lifted. O moon, hide for a bit; o time, stop for a while. Her face is towards me; now suddenly the beautiful spring will come, the world will change O moon, hide for a bit. Everything seems like a dream; there is magic in the night. In the quietness of the vistas around, there is magic in everything. I am tied down, yet my heart takes flight. An utterance hovers on my lips In the game of chance that is love, if I lost my heart, what did I lose? I have the world beside me; all of creation is in my arms. What will destiny bestow on me? I would regret it if I were to ask. An utterance hovers on my lips
Tadpat tarsat umar ganvaayi. Poochho na kaise maine rain bitaayi Na kahin chanda na kahin taare, jot ke pyaase mere nain bechaare. Bhor bhi aas ki kiran na laayi. Poochho na kaise maine rain bitaayi. Do not ask how I spent the night. A moment felt like an age had passed; an age passed, and I could not fall asleep. Do not ask how I spent the night A lamp burns there; and here, my mind. And still, the darkness is not dispelled from my home. My life has passed in misery and longing. Do not ask how I spent the night There is no moon anywhere, nor any stars; My poor eyes yearn for the light. The coming of the dawn too brought no ray of hope. Do not ask how I spent the night
Tu pyaar ka saagar hai (Seema, 1955) Tu pyaar ka saagar hai, teri ek boond ke pyaase hum. Lauta jo diya tune, chale jaayenge jahaan se hum. Tu pyaar ka saagar hai Ghaayal mann ka paagal panchhi udne ko beqaraar; pankh hain komal, aankh hai dhundhli, jaana hai saagar paar. Ab tu hi ise samjhaa, raah bhoole thhe kahaan se hum. Tu pyaar ka saagar hai Idhar jhoomke gaaye zindagi, udhar hai maut khadi. Koi kya jaane kahaan hai seema, uljhan aan padi. Kaanon mein zara keh de, ki aayein kaun disha se hum. Tu pyaar ka saagar hai You are an ocean of love; we thirst for just one drop from you. If you send us back thirsting, we will leave this world. You are an ocean of love This crazed bird of a hurt mind: impatient to take flight. Its wings are delicate, its vision blurred but it is determined to cross the sea. You only can make it understand: where did one take a wrong turn? You are an ocean of love Here, life dances and sings; there stands death, waiting. who knows where lies the boundary? It is a dilemma beyond our comprehension; you only can tell us, in which direction shall we head? You are an ocean of love Translation Madhulika Liddle, 2012
