1 Salem Community College Course Title: Painting Course Code: ART105 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 3 Course Description: This is an introductory course in Painting using acrylic paints. Emphasis is on color theory and its relationship with form. Traditional styles and attitudes will be surveyed in order to familiarize the student with various approaches to painting from past to present. Studio subjects will be predominantly still-life, landscape and abstraction. This basic course assumes that there has been no prior painting experience and begins on an introductory level. Course work will include both classroom assignments and outside projects. Prerequisite: ART 104-Drawing, or instructor permission by portfolio review. Place in College Curriculum: This course will function as an open or humanities elective for students pursuing either a certificate or degree program.

3 Painting / Page 3 Course Performance Objective #1 Students will learn how to prime a masonite panel and complete a still life painting of 3 objects, the table and wall. 1. The student will prime a rigid masonite panel for his/her first painting of 3 objects. 2. The student will paint 3 objects on a table and include the wall behind. 3. The student will complete the painting prior to the next class. Course Performance Objective #2 The student will set up a still life of a round object, a square object and a free form object. Using only black, white and a single color the student will complete 2 paintings. 1. The student will arrange the 3 objects on the table. 2. The student will use only black and white to paint these objects to suggest form and volume. 3. The student will paint these 3 objects again using only a monochromatic color compostition to indicate form and volume. 4. The student will research Picasso s use of monochromatic color to use as a visual reference. Course Performance Objective #3 The student will build on the lecture and demonstration experiences with color, paint application & techniques by demonstrating those techniques throughout the semester on any of the assigned class projects. The students may also be asked to recall how various applications and techniques are performed. 1. The student will demonstrate the techniques of color mixing by preparing colors for each assigned painting. 2. The student will demonstrate the technique of underpainting on the assigned painting. 3. The student will describe and demonstrate the technique of impasto application on any of the assigned paintings if it applies to the subject. 4. The student will describe and demonstrate the technique of scumbling on any of the assigned paintings if it applies to the subject. 5. The student will describe the uses of drip, stain and hard edge painting as methods of paint application. 6. The student will identify the use of stipple, pointillism and broken color as techniques for application by the Impressionist painters and use those techniques on their assigned paintings. 7. The student will identify the use of gesture and action as techniques for application by Expressionist painters and use those techniques for any of their assigned "series" paintings.

4 Painting / Page 4 Course Performance Objective #4 Students will learn to look for color and shadows in objects that lack color, in order to complete a painting. 1. The student will create a still life with 3 eggs, a small white box, a clear drinking glass, a white table surface and a white wall. 2. The student will look for color and shadows in the white objects in order to paint what they see. 3. The student will use various colors and black and white to paint these objects in the still life. Course Performance Objective #5 Students will complete a still life arrangement that uses objects of different colors that are hot and cold in color as well as light and dark in variation. 1. The student will arrange a still life that has 5 objects that have 5 different colors. 2. The student will paint the still life using hot and cold colors as well as variations in light and dark color. 3. The student will include the objects, table and wall in the finished painting. 4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of reflecting and refracting light by applying these principles to the still life arrangement. Course Performance Objective #6 The students will participate in a verbal discussion with other classmates about their paintings. These discussions, known as "critiques," are designed to help the student grow as an artist through constructive criticism of their work. 1. The student will evaluate the works on display from an emotional point of view. 2. The student will judge the technical aspects of the painting to include application and color mixing. 3. The student will assess the effect of the composition on the overall visual form of the work and will discuss balance, scale, focal point and unity. 4. The student will assess the composition with regard to cultural significance of the subject matter presented.

5 Course Performance Objective #7 Painting / Page 5 Students will complete a painting from a still life arrangement made of different objects that are interesting to them. 1. The student will create a still life with several different objects. 2. The student will choose objects independent of advice from others. 3. The student will use various colors and black and white to paint these objects in the still life. ourse Performance Objective #8 Students will learn to incorporate two dimensional objects in a 3 dimensional still life arrangement. 1. The student will create a still life with several objects that also includes a picture of another artists work from art history. 2. The student will produce a full color painting that addresses the flatness of the picture within the composition. 3. The student will consider the 3 dimensional environment that the objects and picture exist in while executing the painting. Course Performance Objective #9 Students will complete a painting in the style of their favorite artist. 1. The student will choose an artist from history whose unique style they wish to emulate, for example, William Harnett, trompe-l oeil painter; Salvador Dali, surrealist; or Ando Hiroshige, woodcut artist. 2. The student will create a still life arrangement made up of objects of their own choosing. 3. The student will paint the still life arrangement in the style of the master artist they have chosen.
